Have you guys seen this thread on the subreddit today?
OP suggests that fanfic involving EasyCGI and Docamera would be hilarious. I agree that would be pretty funny. But then there's BTC's comments. I'm somewhere between wondering how much he's seen (meaning does he know about us), being a little disheartened by his reaction, and remembering that we're bound to get that kind of reaction from some people. And cue segue into another 4 page pseudo-academic essay about the nature of fanfic and how it's perceived by the people it's about.

Date: Saturday, February 2nd, 2013 09:56 pm (UTC)BTC complaining about is weird to me. You'd think that after losing his job he'd be all about doing whatever he could to make more people like him, not less....

Date: Saturday, February 2nd, 2013 09:58 pm (UTC)A lot of people where saying about trying to get people to sub to him.. But unless they sub for his content we could end up with another Baj where all his subs don't even watch..

Date: Saturday, February 2nd, 2013 10:01 pm (UTC)But I also have watched a few ads for him yesterday (because subbing does nothing unless you watch an ad), and seeing that comment makes me want to not watch ads for him. :/ I'm so petty.

Date: Sunday, February 3rd, 2013 07:21 am (UTC)Now I quite enjoy it. Though I can't help shake the feeling I've joined like... A underground covent or something because not many people agree with it or such I quite enjoy it though. The rics re fun to make even if other dislike them.. Although I find it hard t write romance stuff because I'm afraid one of the guys will find it and it will be the next reddit one >.<"
Even people I know freaked out when they saw my fanfic Pre written on my ipad....
Seems even people outside mindcrack don't agree much too :(

Date: Sunday, February 3rd, 2013 08:12 pm (UTC)We are just all so addicted we can write characters of them off by heart >.<"
I know I can anyway, but I do struggle with guys I don't watch so I tend to keep away from them... I might watch a few videos of each for my fic when I finally have some insperation for my Beef and Pause part...
A lot of it still scares me to death. In a lot of fan fics it's just sexual ( while we have a few its high quality (i feel it s anyway...)and with a story behind it)
Like Harry potter and films and tv program's.. Where its a lot more low key hear though we are a small community so it's not surprising our stuff is more "from the heart" so to say? We can give eachother encouragement and help on bits and pieces like if something doesn't sit right that can change it for the next piece of fic or ideas. Where on bigger communities the stuff is kinda worse and as I say usually 100% sexual...
I've been reading alot of fics for ideas but most I can't even read past a few lines it drains my brain to oblivion..

Date: Saturday, February 2nd, 2013 10:43 pm (UTC)Also, as with many things, it's a heck of a lot easier to find bad examples of fanfic than good ones.
I'd like to think that the guys would at least appreciate that it comes from a place of inspiration, even if they dislike the actual content.

Date: Saturday, February 2nd, 2013 11:04 pm (UTC)Everyone's gonna be different and - if people don't like it - you just gotta let them. As long as they don't come up into your face and tell you to stop doing something, I don't have much of a care towards what people think - how I see a lot of the internet due to hate towards many other fandoms I've been a part of.
I'm just gonna deal with it, take a seat and just watch what happens... to be honest :3

Date: Saturday, February 2nd, 2013 11:24 pm (UTC)But yeah some people will react poorly to RPF, which is sad but true. That doesn't mean it has to hamper our fun. :)

Date: Saturday, February 2nd, 2013 11:50 pm (UTC)However, the problem I have with simply keeping the downlow, while I definitely agree no one should link the guys to any smutty fic that might involve them, is that it doesn't guarantee we're going to avoid these reactions forever. They're going to come across this stuff eventually, and I want to be prepared if this place or Mindcrack fan fiction as a whole ever becomes a discussion point among the Mindcrackers themselves. At least one of them already knows about this community. I don't know the circumstances behind his finding us, but the means are there. Any of them could easily find us if they get curious one day and Google their way here.
FanFiction
Date: Saturday, February 2nd, 2013 11:36 pm (UTC)I use to hate the stuff. I thought it was weird, and poorly written, and had no point. It was like daydreaming, only in a public venue, and why would I want people to know my daydreams?
I made fun of my own sister because of this. She read the stuff a lot (I think for Axis Powers Hetalia). It baffled me why she'd read it.
Then I got older, and realized well, that's sort of cruel to just discount a whole community because I disliked it. And so I went on a reading spree. And found it's not all horrible. (also I had come to terms with sex in general, so reading sexy things wasn't as uncomfortable)
So I understand why some people dislike it. And support that if they don't want to read it, they don't have to. I do understand that it's cruel to just say outright it's terrible. It would be better to say large chunks of the internet are terrible! Well, maybe.
Sorry if this is long or terrible itself.

Date: Sunday, February 3rd, 2013 02:34 am (UTC)Regarding BTC: It is discouraging, I totally get it! But yes, there is no way fanfic will be for everyone, and frankly 90% of everything is crap. Just like there's bad Minecraft maps, servers, and LPs, there's bad fanfiction too, and that's often the first thing many people find.
I don't think he wants to completely silence people who do it. I don't think he means that everyone who writes it is terrible. I think he's just had a few bad experiences and doesn't want to repeat that, and that's okay; he's just not communicating that effectively.
But yet again, I'm going to put out my policy on just how visible we should be: I think people who want to find us should be able to find us, with fewer hoops to jump through if possible. I think people should be smart about what they share - if they really don't want to be "revealed", talk to me and I'll put it out there on your behalf. (You can leave a message in the rules post if you want to do that; no one can see the comments to that post but me.)
I think all fanworks, fanfic or fanart or mixes or Photoshops or fan videos or meta or WHATEVER, should be available to all as easily as possible, because fanwork is how culture is transformed and created now and to ignore it is to ignore how hard people work to express themselves. But just like how I don't feel a need to walk into the Museum of Modern Art every week, if people want to avoid this art form, they can and should be able to.
At the same time, I want to let people discover it for themselves and make their own conclusions, and this goes doubly so for the Mindcrackers themselves, as the subjects of this work. If some of them *don't* want to see this, that's fine, and we shouldn't force it on them. But if some do want to know this exists (hi, MC!), or if they find it on their own, they should be aware of what's here and know that the community is here for them.

Date: Sunday, February 3rd, 2013 10:23 am (UTC)And I have to say, I found this place through google myself. (Accidentally, actually. Came through one of the group rewatch posts, took a look around, and decided to lurk.) So I appreciate keeping it open for the most part; this little community has a lot to offer.
