Have you guys seen this thread on the subreddit today?

OP suggests that fanfic involving EasyCGI and Docamera would be hilarious. I agree that would be pretty funny. But then there's BTC's comments. I'm somewhere between wondering how much he's seen (meaning does he know about us), being a little disheartened by his reaction, and remembering that we're bound to get that kind of reaction from some people. And cue segue into another 4 page pseudo-academic essay about the nature of fanfic and how it's perceived by the people it's about.

I was reading t earlier but I must admit I must've missed a few things as I totally don't get it >.<
Easycgi I know is Guude's other account but the other is one I've never heard of..

Same, I guessed it had something to do with doc but I also though Baj as I know he has the whole fire spread and such powers.

I'm intrigued too, I might keep a eye on the thread and hope Guude or another member can explain this strange new 'member' xD

I dunno if that's the name, but I do know Doc has an alt account he uses to record stuff, so that probably is it.

BTC complaining about is weird to me. You'd think that after losing his job he'd be all about doing whatever he could to make more people like him, not less....

He could still be abit annoyed and depressed at the whole situation.. It's not a great one to be in :/
A lot of people where saying about trying to get people to sub to him.. But unless they sub for his content we could end up with another Baj where all his subs don't even watch..

Yeah. I sub to BTC but I don't watch his stuff. He just puts out SO MUCH content. I feel like he'd do better actually if he slowed down and did a FTB every other day and vanilla every two days or every other day or something.

But I also have watched a few ads for him yesterday (because subbing does nothing unless you watch an ad), and seeing that comment makes me want to not watch ads for him. :/ I'm so petty.

Yeah... It's hard to do, I agree he should slow down, I feel like he try's to hard. But he puts out good stuff I think it would be better if he slowed it down and it could give him more time to breath and find a new job, even if he stopped for awhile like adlington has. He warned he might have to with all the stuff going on for him..

I think it's not exactly fair to blame him for disliking RPF. It's not everyone's cup of tea, and since he knows some of the guys personally the more explicit fics (if that's what he's seen) might have weirded him out. I know one of my classmates used to write RPF back in school, and it was quite distressing to find out that a stranger was creating stories about people I knew. I'm not saying that's a good comparison, but I think that he might see it that way from his perspective.

Yeah, but in this case they're talking about two alt accounts that are basically cameras.

Yeah, BTC puts out a lot of videos but they're shorter (about 15-20 minutes each, roughly the length of a Good Morning Mindcrack), whereas other people put out 30-40 minute videos every other day. It's actually the same amount of content (roughly), just done differently.

Of course, I can't tell you what to watch and who to support. :P

Seananners puts out maybe 1 or two videos that are 15 minutes long though does he not?

If his quality is ok and his situation is explained - people not mind. Pyros videos are also sometimes shorter but all his subs (me included) relise uni is hard to juggle with a 'part time job' especially one like YouTube.

Yeah. I get that it's not for everyone, but this isn't even about HIM. It's about two ... things. The camera alts of Guude and Doc. So it's not even people. Obviously people don't have to like fanfic, but at the same time I tend to dislike people who dislike fanfic. Ah well.

When I first watched mindcrack and discovered fanfics i was like NOPE. NOT GOING THERE. but now I like it. You gotta admit that some people might find fanfics of people they know (disregarding the whole player vs real person thing) weird.

Haha same! I read the pony fic Pause talked about and I was just like... *back away slowly and I will get out alive*

Now I quite enjoy it. Though I can't help shake the feeling I've joined like... A underground covent or something because not many people agree with it or such I quite enjoy it though. The rics re fun to make even if other dislike them.. Although I find it hard t write romance stuff because I'm afraid one of the guys will find it and it will be the next reddit one >.<"

Even people I know freaked out when they saw my fanfic Pre written on my ipad....

Seems even people outside mindcrack don't agree much too :(

The "back away slowly and I will get out alive" is pretty much my reaction to the majority of fanfiction. This place is one of the rare places where - yes, I do dare- all of the fics are great, good, or at least decent enough that, while it is not the best writing in the world, is still not bad at all. A lot of the fanfiction that is seen on the Reddit and such is of a nature where the writing itself is terrible, the voices are completely off, or there is a pairing that is written in the wrong way. I have yet to see any of that on this site.
Now nobody prove me wrong. *glares around suspiciously*

Haha, I must agree with you :)
We are just all so addicted we can write characters of them off by heart >.<"
I know I can anyway, but I do struggle with guys I don't watch so I tend to keep away from them... I might watch a few videos of each for my fic when I finally have some insperation for my Beef and Pause part...

A lot of it still scares me to death. In a lot of fan fics it's just sexual ( while we have a few its high quality (i feel it s anyway...)and with a story behind it)
Like Harry potter and films and tv program's.. Where its a lot more low key hear though we are a small community so it's not surprising our stuff is more "from the heart" so to say? We can give eachother encouragement and help on bits and pieces like if something doesn't sit right that can change it for the next piece of fic or ideas. Where on bigger communities the stuff is kinda worse and as I say usually 100% sexual...
I've been reading alot of fics for ideas but most I can't even read past a few lines it drains my brain to oblivion..

DocCamera is used for similar overhead timelapse shots on Doc's single player LP.

It's an alt in the sense that he bought Minecraft twice. He basically places his single player world onto LAN and has the alt log in to it that way. But no, DocCamera as far as I know has never been on a multiplayer server. (Though who knows?)

Sadly I think alot of people have that reaction to finding out about fanfic or fandom in general. 'Oh god that's so weird and icky and why would you do that??!' Seems to be worse for real-person fandoms too - and ours is sort of a grey area in that regard.

Also, as with many things, it's a heck of a lot easier to find bad examples of fanfic than good ones.

I'd like to think that the guys would at least appreciate that it comes from a place of inspiration, even if they dislike the actual content.

I saw the thread and BTC's comment and just laughed at it.
Everyone's gonna be different and - if people don't like it - you just gotta let them. As long as they don't come up into your face and tell you to stop doing something, I don't have much of a care towards what people think - how I see a lot of the internet due to hate towards many other fandoms I've been a part of.
I'm just gonna deal with it, take a seat and just watch what happens... to be honest :3

I think that the best way to avoid reactions like BTC's are to keep the community more on the downlow. We're rather aggressive about promoting it whenever people mention fanfiction on the subreddit, and that brings the RPF to the attention of the people involved more often than not - and isn't that one of the unspoken rules of RPF, to not show it to the people involved? Those who want to see fanfiction about the mindcrack people will come. I know I found it through google!

But yeah some people will react poorly to RPF, which is sad but true. That doesn't mean it has to hamper our fun. :)

I keep getting nervous to talk here, or at all, but a comment from me about fan fiction in general.

I use to hate the stuff. I thought it was weird, and poorly written, and had no point. It was like daydreaming, only in a public venue, and why would I want people to know my daydreams?

I made fun of my own sister because of this. She read the stuff a lot (I think for Axis Powers Hetalia). It baffled me why she'd read it.

Then I got older, and realized well, that's sort of cruel to just discount a whole community because I disliked it. And so I went on a reading spree. And found it's not all horrible. (also I had come to terms with sex in general, so reading sexy things wasn't as uncomfortable)

So I understand why some people dislike it. And support that if they don't want to read it, they don't have to. I do understand that it's cruel to just say outright it's terrible. It would be better to say large chunks of the internet are terrible! Well, maybe.

Sorry if this is long or terrible itself.

I don't know if it has anything to do with this tweet I saw... (I don't know how to link a tweet) Search for "anyadrift" she only has one tweet. I noticed it a few weeks ago and wondered what the deal was. I don't know what is exactly going on or why, but this could possibly be bad.

It's one person out of many weirded out by what we do. It's nothing I can stop without completely locking down the community, and I'm unwilling to do that for reasons I'll discuss in another post.

Okay, I would totally love some EasyCGI/DocCamera semi-meta fic, two usually-silent watchers talking about all the things they've seen that cannot be unseen from high in the sky. Maybe DocCamera is jealous of EasyCGI getting to observe multiple people? I don't know, it could be a thing.

Regarding BTC: It is discouraging, I totally get it! But yes, there is no way fanfic will be for everyone, and frankly 90% of everything is crap. Just like there's bad Minecraft maps, servers, and LPs, there's bad fanfiction too, and that's often the first thing many people find.

I don't think he wants to completely silence people who do it. I don't think he means that everyone who writes it is terrible. I think he's just had a few bad experiences and doesn't want to repeat that, and that's okay; he's just not communicating that effectively.

But yet again, I'm going to put out my policy on just how visible we should be: I think people who want to find us should be able to find us, with fewer hoops to jump through if possible. I think people should be smart about what they share - if they really don't want to be "revealed", talk to me and I'll put it out there on your behalf. (You can leave a message in the rules post if you want to do that; no one can see the comments to that post but me.)

I think all fanworks, fanfic or fanart or mixes or Photoshops or fan videos or meta or WHATEVER, should be available to all as easily as possible, because fanwork is how culture is transformed and created now and to ignore it is to ignore how hard people work to express themselves. But just like how I don't feel a need to walk into the Museum of Modern Art every week, if people want to avoid this art form, they can and should be able to.

At the same time, I want to let people discover it for themselves and make their own conclusions, and this goes doubly so for the Mindcrackers themselves, as the subjects of this work. If some of them *don't* want to see this, that's fine, and we shouldn't force it on them. But if some do want to know this exists (hi, MC!), or if they find it on their own, they should be aware of what's here and know that the community is here for them.

Yes and yes. I love the subject of fanwork as reinterpreting and transforming culture.

And I have to say, I found this place through google myself. (Accidentally, actually. Came through one of the group rewatch posts, took a look around, and decided to lurk.) So I appreciate keeping it open for the most part; this little community has a lot to offer.
