Enjoy!
“What did you do guy!?”
“He’ll be fine. He’s only knocked out. Look, he’s coming to already,”
Blame’s head hurt. He felt like he had been clobbered with something heavy. Come to think of it, that’s what he remembered happening. He sat up quickly with a groan, looking around. The second he saw the two figures standing together a few feet away, he jumped up, pulling his sword out.
“Whoa, guy! Put that away. We’re unarmed.” Said the shorter of the two. He had messy blond hair and blue eyes. He wore an emerald green top, not to dis-similar to Bella’s eyes.
The taller of the two was dressed in bright clothes, and had brown hair and eyes. By the way he looked; Blame guessed he was a native. But that still didn’t explain why either of them was in the middle of the forest.
“Who are you two and why are you here?” Blame said, still refusing to put his sword away.
The native eyed the sword warily. “We could ask you the same thing. Now, put the weapon away, and then we can talk”.
Blame watched them for a moment, and then slowly sheathed his sword. He sighed, and waited for them to start speaking. The shorter of the two spoke, words drawn out in a southern accent.
“Well. First things first, I’m Guude and this here is my buddy Pause. We like to go exploring, and that’s how we’ve ended up here. A little lost, if I’m honest” Guude said. He stood expectantly, waiting for a reply.
“BTC. You can call me Blame. The cat is mine, she’s Bella. Can I ask, what the fuck did you hit me with?”
Pause smiled sheepishly. “A tree branch. It did its job. It stopped you from almost beheading Guude”.
“Well, if he hadn’t snuck up on me, I wouldn’t have done that!” Blame said, shooting Guude a look.
He immediately protested. “I didn’t sneak up on you. Or I didn’t intend to, at least. I came over to ask what you were doing!”
“You could’ve called out!”
“Well, I-“
“Will you two please stop?” Pause said, glaring between the two. “If you hadn’t noticed, Blame has yet to tell us why he is here”
Blame sighed. “I have received a letter saying I need to head south. I would love to stay and chat about it, but I need to head off”
Guude’s eyes lit up. “That’s the way we’re heading! We can walk together.”
Blame groaned. “Fine. But if either of you touch Bella, I will slit your throats”. He checked his compass, then started heading south again, listening to the sound of their footsteps behind him.
------------
Again, Blame spent the entire day walking. This time though, he had the company of two complete strangers. If he was honest, he wasn’t completely disheartened by it. At least this way, if there was trouble, at least he had people to fight with him.
The sun was beginning to set when Pause spoke up. “Maybe we should set up camp for the night?”
Blame glanced at the sun, which as setting rapidly in the west. After watching it for a few moments, he nodded in agreement. He pulled out his tent, setting it up quickly, the others following suit.
They camped out the entire night, none of them sleeping much. Bella roamed the general area, chasing the occasional mouse. Eventually, they all must’ve slept an hour or to, because the next thing they knew, the sun was rising, weak rays of light dancing around the area. Blame climbed out of the tent, stretching and getting to work quickly, disassembling the tent and packing everything up.
Pause and Guude also woke up, climbing out of their tents. They followed Blame’s lead, quickly packing up. No one said much, just the occasional grunt or cough.
“Right. Let’s eat before we leave. No point taking unnecessary breaks” Blame said, shifting through his food supply. Pause nodded in agreement, pulling out some bread and soup for him and Guude.
As soon as they had finished their extremely early breakfast, they started their journey again, Blame in the front with Bella, Pause and Guude following close behind.
------------
After a couple of uneventful days of walking, the trees started to thin.
“I think we’re getting closer to the edge of the forest now” Guude commented, glancing around them.
“I think your right” Blame nodded.
Pause watched as Bella suddenly streaked ahead, weaving through the trees. Without thinking, he followed, sprinting as fast as he could.
“Quick! Follow Bella!” Pause yelled over his shoulder. The others obliged, breaking into a sprint, following the path pause had taken.
Then ran into a small clearing, where Bella was standing, hissing for all she was worth, scratching at the ground.
“What’s happened, Bella?” Blame asked, approaching her, bending down. He looked at what she was scratching at.
Then he realised.
There was a bone sticking out the ground. Paused came closer, expecting it, then shaking his head.
“Just a marker” he stated.
“What for?” Guude asked, glancing at it wearily.
Pause shrugged. “Not sure”.
“We should get going” Blame said, picking up Bella and placing her on his shoulder.
“Yeah. Let’s go” Pause said, glancing at the bone one last time before exiting the clearing.
They walked on, none of them speaking. They were all too lost in their own thoughts to communicate.
-------------
It had been a week.
One long tiring since Blame had begun his adventure, other than running into Pause and Guude, and the bone incident, nothing to interesting had happened. They had finally reached the end of the forest, and had started crossing huge plains.
The sun set once again. They did their repetitive routine of setting up a temporary camp, eating some food, then settling down. Just as they were climbing into the tents, Pause remarked on their short supply of food.
Blame nodded. “We can kill some animals and cook them tomorrow. It’ll set us back an hour or two, but it’s necessary”. Blame climbed fully into his tent, and curled up, Bella at his feet. However, tonight was different. He couldn’t help feel uneasy about being in the open, but it couldn’t be helped. If they were lucky, they’d be back in a forest by sun fall tomorrow.
Blame rose the next morning to find Pause already up, having slaughtered some animals and cooking them.
Pause nodded. “Couldn’t sleep.”
“Me neither” Blame said, sighing. “We should set off as soon as possible”
Pause nodded, going to pack up his supplies. Guude climbed out his tent, yawning, nose twitching at the smell of food cooking. He also packed up his tent, as did Blame.
Ten minutes later, all three were ready to head out again. After a couple of hours of walking, another forest came into sight. Blame was relieved. Maybe he’d sleep better tonight. Maybe.
Just as they reached the edge of the forest, the sun began to sink.
“Maybe we should keep walking while it’s still light? Get as far in into the woods as possible” Blame suggested, glad the other two nodded in agreement. The further in, the better.
Or that’s what he thought
It was about midnight when they stopped walking, all three too exhausted to do more than set up their tents and crawl inside.
But it’s never that easy.
Blame turned sharply out the sound of a strangled cry. The figure of Guude had collapsed to the floor, another figure standing over him. A figure that was definitely not Pause.
Blame unsheathed his sword quickly, charging at the hooded figure, who blocked the attack easily. Blame was shocked as the figure lunged for his neck, and he realised the truth.
“Pause! It’s a vampire!” Blame yelled, barely blocking the advancing figure.
Pause nodded, pulling something out of a pocket, charging at the figure.
There was a blood curdling scream as Pause drove the silver dagger directly into the vampire’s heart. It hit the floor with a hard thud.
Pause kicked the figure over, and pulled the blood stained dagger from the figure. As it rolled over, the hood fell down, a bundle of red hair fell over the vampire’s face, and Pause gasped, back peddling away violently.
“Pause? What is it?” Blame asked urgently.
Pause had gone pale. Shaking, he shook his head his head in shock.
“Pause. Just spit it out.”
Pause pulled himself up, and looked Blame dead in the eyes.
