At Nebris’ house, the team set to work inspecting each corner of the scene. Vechs goes into the kitchen and surveys the mess, taking note of the way all the food has been stolen from the refrigerator.
“Hmm. So the intruder was hungry,” he says, shutting the door.
“I’d say!” Nebris says from where he leans in the doorway. “I’m more concerned about the egg, though!”
“Why don’t you make yourself useful then?” Vechs asks, eating a stray piece of cereal.
Nebris huffs and goes into his living room where Jsano bends over the remains of his precious egg.
“Any evidence?”
Jsano stands up. “Yeah, I found some evidence.” He drops a thin black fibre into Nebris’ hand. “Or should I say… eggvidence?”
“You shouldn’t.”
“That’s eggsactly what I thought you’d say.”
Nebris sighs, and looks at the evidence Jsano has just handed him. “What the hell is this?”
Jsano shrugs. “I don’t know. It could be anything. It might not even be evidence, but at least it’s something. You should try and match it to someone. See if someone has hair or clothes that match.”
Nebris squints at the fibre, and goes into the bedroom where Pakratt is.
“Hey Pak. Found anything yet?”
Pakratt shrugs apologetically at the decimated bedclothes. “There’s nothing in here at all,” he says. “I’m sorry.”
“That’s ok,” Nebris says. He looks at Pakratt. “Uh…”
He looks at the evidence in his hand. Pakratt has black hair, as well as black clothing. He says nothing, and goes to look for Aurey. Where has she got to? She did say something about looking outside, so Nebris heads out the back door. As soon as he’s outside, Aurey comes barrelling up to him excitedly.
“Nebris!” she exclaims. “I found something.”
He follows her around the back of his house. She’s pointing at his bathroom window. It’s up high, but he can definitely see what she’s found. The window has been smashed in.
“Aah, the bathroom.” Of course. Why didn’t he think of this before?
“Aurey,” he says, his eyes darting to make sure nobody’s listening. “Jsano found this black… hair… thing near the egg – or where the egg used to be – and well, I suspect Pak. He has black hair and clothes.”
Aurey stares at him and laughs. “Nebris, you have black clothing! You could have dropped that fibre.”
“Oh. Yeah.” He pauses to think. “Come to think of it, Vechs has black hair too…”
“Why would he steal your egg, Nebris?” Aurey asks, laughing. “Anyway. I’m going back inside to inspect the inside of the bathroom.”
“Good idea,” Nebris says. They both turn to go back in the backdoor. Aurey goes first, and Nebris hears her gasp. He rushes to look inside, and is greeted by a shocking sight.
