"I just can't seem to say I love you."

Nebris will always remember the moment he heard the news. The moment his life was forever changed. What he had been doing, where he was, even the clothes he was wearing, forever imprinted into his soul.

"Etho is leaving Mindcrack."

The words cut through the air like a sharpness IV diamond sword. Briefly Nebris looked down, wondering if he'd actually been stabbed through the chest. He wouldn't put it past Etho to hire someone to distract him to win in the death games, after all. Nope. No sign of arrow or sword in his chest. Then why did it feel like he'd just been run through?

The news paralyzed Nebris in place. He stared at Blame like he was an apparition, dropping the block of cobble he had been holding.

"Wait, what?" Nebris replied, hoping he had misheard. Belatedly he cursed as the heavy block landed on his foot with a crunch.

"Etho, he's done. We're having a small get together for him to say goodbye." Blame leaned against the wall, looking a bit bored.

"But.. Why?" Nebris questioned, looming over the shorter man, confusion filling his amethyst eyes.

Blame shrugged enigmatically. "Ask him yourself." And with that, Blame left, unconcerned. Of course, Blame had never gotten to know Etho well. Blame tended not to get attached to anyone. It was all business to him. Briefly Nebris wondered if Blame was correct in his apathy; it certainly made things less difficult.

Nebris groaned. He stared at his feet, wondering what to do. Of course he'd attend the farewell party, but that seemed... Not enough. It was too impersonal considering how close he was to Etho. How close he had been, at one time, at least. After all, Etho never let on that he was leaving. He closed his eyes, remembering all of the fun they'd had over the years. The UHC showdown, the death games, King of the ladder....was it all really coming to an end?

Nebris returned to his work in progress home. What could he give the man who had everything? Besides that, if Etho left, would he be bringing anything with him?

So deep in thought, Nebris was startled to the touch on his shoulder. He flinched, turning around quickly and stumbling. He was even more surprised to find out it was Etho.

Etho chuckled quietly in that deep, smooth voice of his. The voice Nebris both adored and despised. He adored it's richness; he hated how raspy his own was in comparison.

"Something bothering you Nebs? Usually I have to actually work to get the drop on you." Etho taunted, mismatched eyes peering into Nebris' soul. Idly, they both wondered if this would be the last taunt they shared together.

"I just... I'm shocked.. I never thought you'd leave us."

Etho sighed. "I wanted to tell you myself but BTC beat me to it. That guy really needs to learn to keep his mouth shut."

"Why, Etho?" Nebris' voice was shakey, betraying the bubbling emotions within.

A deep sigh. Etho took a seat.

"I need a challenge, Nebris. The death games was fun, but no one plays anymore, besides you. Everyone is so complacent to do their happy little houses, only to tear them down and build them again. No one does anything challenging."

Nebris looked at Etho. "You never asked me.."

Etho offered Nebris a gentle smile, though it was hidden by the mask he wore. "I know, but aside from you, I never really made friends with anyone else."

Nebris frowned. "So instead you'll abandon the only friend you did make?"

"Nebris, it's not like that. I'll come back for visits."

Etho wasn't sure why, but saying that felt like a lie.

Nebris was quiet for a long time. When he looked up again, Etho had slipped away. He sighed, stretching out on his bed. His mind wandered, contemplating what a world without Etho would be like.

Later that night...

Guude had started the party with a mention of how Etho joined mindcrack, how long he was a member, and of course what an asset to the community he was. Nebris was bored out of his mind. Soon everyone broke off into their little groups, chatting, drinking, eating merrily. It seemed more like a birthday party than a farewell to Nebris. The upbeat mood made his stomach sour. How could everyone be so happy when Etho was leaving?

Occasionally someone would walk over to Etho and give him a hug or say a few words. And then they'd return to their own table, having a blast.

Nebris sat alone, arms folded. The happy mood was really starting to piss him off. He couldn't stand how happy everyone was. Nebris felt like he was attending a funeral.

"Tell him how you feel Nebris, it's your last chance." Blame whispered in his ear before heading home for the night. Nebris clutched the envelope in his pocket.

It had been written in haste, a little letter to let Etho know how he felt. He'd decided not to give it to Etho after all, but now he wasn't so sure. Maybe Blame was right, this might be the last time he'd see Etho.

Nebris crossed the room, slipping the letter into Etho's hand silently. Etho's eyes betrayed nothing, as usual, but behind the mask, Etho's mouth was open slightly in shock. Nebris returned to his seat, but immediately had pangs of anxiety. Sitting here waiting for Etho to read his letter was torture.

Quietly, Nebris left the party. The night air was crisp and cool and soothed his nerves. He knew Etho would understand. He always did.

Etho watched Nebris leave, wanting to stop him, but not daring to. He would look a fool chasing after Nebris, begging him to come back. Curiosity quickly got the better of him, and so he opened the letter.

Etho,

I wish you would stay, but I know how you are and that once you've made up your mind no amount of begging on my part could ever change that. I know that I will miss you. I can't help but hope you'll miss me too. I feel like I have things to tell you before you leave, but I can't seem to write them on paper. You're more than a friend to me, Etho, but I just can't seem to say I love you.

Sincerely,
Nebris

Beneath his mask Etho smirked. He understood perfectly. He felt his whole body relax as he enjoyed the rest of the party. He had a feeling that he would not be going home after the party tonight.
