Prompt Swap - For Sub (Subliminalcircles)
Wednesday, June 17th, 2015 11:09 pmWell, it's like an hour from being late in my time zone, but it's finished! (I'm so bad xP)
I had Sub as my prompt-giver-er, and I chose "3.) A MindCrack one-shot in which the plot follows your favorite song. Very broad if you want something different."
The song is Nothing Left to Say by Imagine Dragons, and I totally didn't wait until the last minute to decide the song, let alone write this.
Without further ado, here you wonderful people go, my thing! Warning for all: it's feelsy (or at least that's what I was going for)
Etho laid in his bed, tired but with no hope of sleep gripping him hard enough to send him into blissful, thoughtless, dreamless sleep. Regret haunted his soul, and he frankly didn’t know if he’d rather forget or torture himself for staying silent about it like he was.
He shifted beneath the covers, still fully clothed in his outfit from the day, and the day before, and the day before that. He stared through barely-open blinds on his window, the moonlight seeping in just barely and casting shadows on the floor and on the wall behind him. Most nights he could stare at the wall, but tonight the darkness in his mind was more painful than most, driving him to turn away from the silhouette he created by being there. Etho ran a hand through his hair, which was messier than normal (which many thought couldn’t have ever happened with how it looked before, but it was clear Etho hadn’t put a care into his appearance in days, possibly weeks or even months), and sat up, pulling the bedsheets away and slipping onto the floor, his feet making a slight noise against the boards of his home.
Maybe a walk will do me some good, Etho thought, trying to trick what hid in the back of his mind about why he really wanted to leave behind the room that held so much importance to a time that felt like years ago when it was only months. But, as soon as he hoisted himself off the soft sheets, Etho felt the world begin to sway around him. Grabbing out for something to balance himself, he managed to hit his hand on something soft and moveable as the rest of the world fell into away into black void. He looked up at what he was touching, and he caught a glimpse of a black vest and a gentle smile before it was whisked away, a trail of light chasing behind the figure as he receded into the distance.
“No…” Etho barely squeaked out, emotion filling his voice as he felt so many well up after months without use, and his companions while they were gone grew larger to keep them in their shadow. “Come back… please…” Etho said, his voice failing, but his feet began to move unsteadily down the path left behind.
The hesitant steps made way for large strides, sprinting down the path of light; of hope, Etho not daring to step away from the fragile lifeline provided to him. In his ears, Etho heard only the pounding of his heart, and it’s panicked beat drove him to keep running lest it stop. If it stopped, he knew he’d reached the end, maybe not the desirable one, but it would end the pain.
The path never seemed to end, but Etho’s only hope was to keep running, chase and grab ahold of his life and his memories. Images flooded his senses, laughter reaching his ears and joy reaching his heart, and it threatening to strike him down as he remembered the way things had been. He waved a hand through the scenes, tears running down his cheeks as he shook his head and looked away from his old life, his happy life, and kept sprinting to regain it.
“What do you have to say for yourself?” his mind asked, tearing at him with a question he knew he couldn’t accept the answer to. “WHAT WILL YOU SAY!?” He could tell he was bleeding all over now, flowing off of his arms and legs and painting the path behind him and splattering loudly in the silent air. He threw himself further into the depths of the straight path he ran along, not daring to stop or slow or think twice.
Etho suddenly slammed into something, falling onto his back as he stared up into the face of the man he needed to talk to.
“Etho…” Nebris asked quietly, emotion clouding his vision. “There… there’s nothing you can say for yourself at this point. You've done enough to hurt me..."
"Nebris, I.... There isn't anything left that I can say, is there?" Etho conceded, tears welling in the corners of his eyes. He sniffed, wiping his tears away on his sleeve and covered his face in the blood from the cuts on his arms from the words he'd heard.
"Goodbye, Etho. You'd best leave before you hurt yourself and me any more than you have," Nebris said finally, emotion choking him, too, as he turned away from Etho. Etho still reached up for Nebris as he felt the air rush past him again, falling away from the white light of the path, away from Nebris and his hope.
Etho barely registered when he made contact with the water, he only felt himself falling away from the ground. He tried to speak again, but he got a mouthful of water instead. Drowning on the sorrow, Etho reached one last time to Nebris' receding form, asking, praying for Nebris to change his mind and save him from this before his hand no longer was his to control. He fell into the water, and with no fight, no will left to him, he hit the bottom.

By the time they checked in on Etho, it was almost indistinguishable how he'd gone. But for all the gashes and scratches, the others finally figured out Etho had drowned, his body destroyed by his lungs filling with fluid as he’d fallen to the floor.
Everyone attended the funeral but Nebris. But he went to the grave almost daily to talk and apologize.
