The Last Rose - One-Shot
Saturday, April 18th, 2015 05:47 pmNo, I have not abandoned MindCrack Origins. I'm having a hard time writing the next chapter. This one-shot is partially to help my mind flow. This one-shot doesn't really have any particular plot. Really, this is more of a chapter with heavy symbolism. Credit to ABP for writing the poem in this one-shot. With hope, Chapter 2 of MindCrack Origins will be posted tomorrow.
P.S. 1 million hugs to anyone who can figure out the symbolism. :3
Aureylian sat at the base of her tree in the middle of the meadow. The birds would land, peck, and then hop away. Not a cloud smudged the bluest, summer sky, and the sun's rays swept through the land. Poppies and dandelions dotted the rolling hills. There was one thing that was out of place, or to better put it, quite peculiar: the single rose that sat between Aureylian's splayed legs.
Certainly peculiar. After staring absently at the rose for some time, she took note of the shade of the tree in the surrounding. A beauty like the rose wouldn't prosper with the towering tree above it. Very carefully, Aureylian scooped the dirt around the rose and picked it up, roots and all. Standing up, she made her way through the meadow. A small cottage came into view. The garden surrounding it had a few carrots and a pumpkin growing. Lilacs and peonies stood by the door.
When she came to the garden, she kneeled down and started moving aside dirt. Making a small hole, she gingerly placed the rose in the ground. She stepped back to take a look at it. The petals were reddest of red, and the stems and leaves were almost shamrock.
After about a minute, she stepped inside her cottage, a compact, two-room hut. Sitting on the window sill was a book and quill. Picking it up, she stepped back outside. She sat down beside the rose and started to write.
As she wrote, a red speck could be seen in the distance making its way over the hill and towards the cottage. Several minutes past, and Vechs approached the garden, yawning as he did so. “I’ve run out of materials for Davion Keep, Zisteau is busy, so I’m going to bother you for a while.”
Aureylian nodded, not surprised by his appearance. “I’m sure I’ve got some stuff to do. For example,” she gestured towards the rose. “Check out what I found!”
Vechs kneeled down in front of the rose, his mouth wide in awe. “Wow! But… What… But how?” His expression was baffled. “There haven’t been any roses since 1.7!”
Aureylian was just as confused as he was. “I dunno. But I’m sure this means something.”
Vechs grinned. “Roses in 1.9 confirmed?”
“I wish.” Aureylian sighed as she absently stared at the sky.
Vechs took note of the book and quill in her hand. “Watcha writing?”
Aureylian snapped back to reality. “Oh, I’m trying to write something about the rose. A phenomenon like this should be commemorated.” She scribbled something out in the book. “Maybe Pyro can keep record of this.”
Vechs nodded. “Can I read it?”
“It’s not finished yet. I’m having trouble of what to write.” She scribbled a few lines before the end of her quill snapped. “Aw snap…” Aureylian sighed at her terrible pun. “I need to go get a new quill.”
“Have fun,” Vechs called after her.
“I will,” Aureylian said over her shoulder as she stepped into the cottage.
Vechs sat outside for a bit longer, staring at the horizon. What was taking Aureylian so long? He sighed as he looked at his surroundings, searching for something to do. Bees, grass, a tree, a wall, and the book. The book was lying wide open.
Smiling, Vechs snatched up the book and looked at the pages. What kind of stuff did she write about the rose? There were a couple of pages full of writing and scribbled out lines. She finally seemed to write a fitting first line, it appeared. Aureylian sat at the base of her tree in the middle of the meadow.
He looked at all of the scribbled lines, searching for some that he could read through the ink markings. Finally, he found one.
The flower in the rain
felt no pain
as it sang a song
by Taylor Swift.
Anyone would have giggled at those few lines, but not for Vechs. With a realization, he knew what the rose meant. He knew why it was there. He set the book down and started to get up. Aureylian, just in time, walked out with a new quill.
A bit startled, he stared at her blankly. “I need to walk a bit.”
Aureylian had a curious look on her face, but he didn’t question him. Without saying a word, Vechs walked towards back towards the hills.
