Here's tomorrow's chapter. Unlike some people, this is not an April Fool's chapter- it's the actual chapter three. Remember that I won't be able to post chapters until late Monday or Tuesday, so sorry about that.

This chapter starts off as pretty wild but the second half or so is just me having fun writing and teasing the Veylian some more. It's a bit on the shorter side but I think it's enjoyable anyway.

Chapter Three

Kingdom of Traz’madar, Mincraftia. September 6, year 373. Time instance 483Z.

“So let me get this straight. Two monsters fell from the sky and wanted Vechs dead because he supposedly abandoned them?” Guude was asking.

“Pretty much.”

“So, the blue one was called…?”

“Glar’ren.” Aureylian supplied. “The serpent was Draemae and they mentioned a Specterveil.”

Guude looked around at the assembled Mindcrackers. “Anyone have any idea what the hell is going on?”

“Vechs, have you heard any of those names before?” Nebris asked.

“No. Never. I don’t recognize the two, either. I’ve never seen anything like them.”

“Hmmm.” Nebris narrowed his purple eyes to think. “I’m pretty stumped. I can’t imagine what that was all about.” The group in general nodded and mumbled in agreement. Whatever those things had been, they were clearly dangerous, angry, and had at least one more.

“Maybe they’re-“ Etho stopped in the middle of his sentence, suddenly, as if cut off.

“What?” Guude demanded.

“I expected to be interrupted there.” Etho admitted. “So I stopped myself ahead of time.”

“Why did you expect to be interrupted?” BdoubleO asked, frowning. The ninja shrugged.

“It seemed like a good time to be interrupted. Anyway, maybe they’re-“

“Shhh! Do you hear that?”

“Nebris I swear I-“

“Shhh!” Nebris half-stood, listening.

Now that it was silent, the Mindcrackers could hear it.

Rumbling and cracking in the earth and rock below.

“What the-“

Etho was once again interrupted by a large head ripping its way out of the ground in the middle of the meeting. It roared, pushing up against the earth and pulling itself out of the ground as the Mindcrackers scattered.

“I knew it!” the ninja shouted, leaping onto a roof and drawing his sword. “I knew it! Foiled again!”

The others weren’t focused on him, though. They were focused on the creature before them.

It was a dragon- or, at least, most of a dragon. It seemed…incomplete. It was about forty feet long and strongly built, clearly good at digging (large, flat feet with claws built for digging and shredding alike), and built for smashing and crashing. It had those same angry red eyes and four short horns on its head. Its wings and anything else above the chest appeared to be made of large stone plates instead of scales that overlapped and slid past each other to allow movement. Its tail possessed a simple arrowhead at the end.

From the chest down (up and down, not from the chest back along its body) the stone plates vanished to expose just the creature’s muscles. The very bottom of the creature, including most of its legs, was just bone. The dragon made creaking and grating sounds as it moved, and it honestly shouldn’t have worked at all. Clearly it worked on the same magical energy that Glar’ren did- and it gave Vechs the same strange tingling feeling, as if he should know it, but he didn’t.

The dragon’s red eyes swept across the group until they, unsurprisingly, locked on Vechs.

“Davion.” it growled. “I am Spalor. If it were not for Specterveil, you would be dust beneath my claws right now. But he has ordered us not to kill you…yet. You will fall to us, Vechs Davion. You and all who get in our way. But you will know pain. You will know agony.” Her tail swept and demolished someone’s house (judging by the offended noises coming from Pause, it was his), creating a spectacular crashing sound. Her wings spread, massive affairs of stone that looks practically impenetrable.

“Why are you here? What do you want?” Vechs demanded. “You all claim that I know who you are and that I abandoned you, but I have never seen you before!”

“Krraaah! You lie! You left me unfinished, Vechs Davion! You abandoned us and didn’t even have the decency to do anything to me! Finish, extinguish, anything! It is agony to be like this! You left us to rot, no matter what state we were in! This is why you will suffer!” Her tail lashed, wrecking a few more houses (Guude groaned and Nebris sighed loudly).

“I don’t know what you’re talking about! You-“

“Silence, worm!” Spalor opened her mouth and the back of her maw started to glow with built up flame. Vechs prepared to roll out of the way before Spalor suddenly froze, then snapped her jaw shut. She growled loudly and flared her wings.

“You are lucky, for now. Specterveil wants you alive- but you won’t live long. No, you will not live long at all! Not once we are finished with you! You will slip into our nightmare, our terror that we have created and he has planned, and you will never awaken!” She roared one final time, shooting flames at the sky, then retreated back into the ground, closing up her tunnel behind her.

A silence fell across the Mindcrackers.

“Now what the hell was that about?” Blame picked his way over to where the dragon had retreated into the ground. “They’re damn insistent that you know who they are.”

Aureylian frowned and put a hand on Vechs’s shoulder (not the easy and casual motion that it would have been for one of the taller people). “Are you okay?”

“…Yeah. Just shaken. Having three monsters show up and scream at you while you have no idea what they’re talking about is a bit…unsettling. They seem pretty angry and I don’t know what’s going on.”

“We’ll get through it.” Seth said, confidently. “We just need to rebuild some houses and maybe get some defenses going. I’m thinking someone needs to help me out with the cannon.”

“Oh! I can do that.” Zisteau volunteered.

“I figured you would!”

“Just don’t aim it at my house again.” Vechs said, amused. “By the way, Seth, you owe me a new window.”

“Yeah, yeah.”

Guude cleared his throat. “Everyone, keep your weapons ready. We don’t know what these things are or what they’re capable of, or if there’s more.”

“Don’t let your guard down.” Paul advised, patting his sword. “Stick together and don’t go anywhere alone- especially you, Vechs. Someone should be with him at all times.”

“I don’t need a babysitter!”

“Think of it as a bodyguard. Like you’re royalty and you have a royal guard.”

“I think babysitter is more appropriate.” Blame said mildly. “He acts like a child anyway.”

That earned quite a few laughs, even from Vechs himself.

“Babyguard, then.” Aureylian decided. “I’ll take first watch.”

Vechs pretended to be horrified by this turn of events, scooting away from her and pulling faces, overall just making both of them laugh harder.

Paul stepped closer to Blame and dropped his voice to a whisper.

“I’ll bet you ten emeralds they’ll end up together within a month.”

“Deal. There’s no way.”

~~~
“Vechs?” Aureylian finally asked.
The two had been sitting in Vechs’s house for several hours- he was tinkering with something and cursing quietly while she alternated between watching him and reading.
“Yeah?”
“Are you scared?”
“Of what? This?” Vechs held up what he was working on.
“No! The…things. The creatures.”
“Oh. No.”
“Really? I’d be terrified, if I was you. Actually, I am terrified! I’ve had the living bananas scared out of me three times today.”
“Living bananas.” Vechs repeated, slowly. “As opposed to dead bananas?”
Aureylian pulled a face and he laughed.
“Anyway, I guess I’m a bit…jittery. I have a bunch of angry freaky monsters after me that want me to suffer and die.”
“You’re scared. You just won’t deny it.”
“…Maybe a little.”
“Do you need a hug?”
He pulled a sad face. “Yes.”
“Well, too bad.”
“Relly!”
“You were being a smart-aleck. No hugs for you.”
“That’s no fair.”
“It’s perfectly fair! You being a smart-aleck equals no hugs.”
“I wasn’t informed of this rule! I call cheating.”
“Fine. You get one free hug, this time.”
“Yay!” Vechs shifted over to her, but she mimed punching him in the nose. He pouted and tugged at her sleeve until she hugged him briefly, laughing.
“You’re like a puppy!” she protested. “A very needy and attention-starved puppy!”
“I’ve been called that before.” Vechs noted.
“Yeah, I remember. During our walk across Illian, you had to stop to pee every, like, ten minutes.”
“It wasn’t every ten minutes! It was every hour or so!”
“You still made Blame sigh a lot!”
Vechs grinned widely, definitely remembering Blame’s annoyed expression whenever he had to rush off briefly.
“At least you stopped once we started getting attacked all the time.” Aureylian said, also amused.
“It wasn’t for awhile until that one time that I almost got my butt burned off by a surprise Blaze. It was pretty rude.”
“You’d look pretty silly without a butt.”
“How would you know? You’ve been looking!”
“Vechs!” She swatted his arm. “No, I just mean…it’s kind of part of the human silhouette, and it’s just…you’d look really really silly without one! That’s all I’m saying!”
Vechs was smirking slightly, not saying anything, but clearly thinking it.
That earned him another swat to the shoulder and Aureylian turning away, pretending to be offended.
Aureylian ended up taking most “babyguarding” shifts with Vechs, partly because he was a lot of fun, partly because she was worried about him, and partly just to have an excuse to hang out with him.
