Monstrous (Chapter Thirteen)
Friday, March 13th, 2015 12:06 pmLonger chapters are becoming more and more of a thing lately, haven't they?
I'm not entirely sure I like how this chapter turned out- Aureylian is a lot harder to write than I anticipated. Also, I've picked up the horrible cliffhanger thing from Jiminee and I am very sorry.

Chapter Thirteen
Kingdom of Illian, Minecraftia. July 9, year 373. Time instance 483Z.
It was late at night, but not yet midnight, when Vechs awoke.
The first thing he noticed was that he didn’t recognize where he was. His only explanation was that someone had…taken him into their chunk? He sat up and the second thing he noticed was that he was human.
The third thing he noticed was how weak he felt.
That’s when it all came rushing back to him. The memory of what had happened hit him like a brick to the skull. He grasped for the energy lines but he couldn’t feel them. He couldn’t do anything.
Mortal.
He hadn’t been mortal in fifty years.
A panic overtook him. Could he go back to his monstrous form? He wasn’t stuck like this, was he?
Before he could try, a woman (who he now vaguely remembered seeing before passing out) stirred. She had been asleep in a chair beside the bed he was in, as if she had fallen asleep looking out for him.
As her eyes met his, Vechs remembered he had said something a bit embarrassing earlier. Woops.
“Hey, you’re awake!” She woke up completely immediately. “How are you? I kinda had to drag you here but I don’t think I broke anything.”
“Uh…Fine, I guess.” Vechs looked around and found his goggles on the bedside table as well as his hat. He put them on, feeling a bit better.
“That’s good!”
“Who…are you, exactly?”
“Oh wow I’m sorry! I forgot to introduce myself. I suppose it sort of got lost in the whole you-falling-from-the-sky fiasco. I’m Aureylian.” She held out a hand and Vechs shook it.
“Vechs Davion. Thanks for getting me out of there.”
“I saw you falling and had to help. How did that happen, anyway?”
Vechs hesitated, mind working quickly. He couldn’t tell her he was a worldbuilder- was rang painfully in his mind-, she’d think he was nuts. What else could he say? Think, Vechs, think!
“I don’t know.” Stupid!
Aureylian frowned. “You don’t know?”
“I don’t remember. One minute I’m in my room, and the next…” Vechs made a vague motion with his hands.
“That’s some serious shenanigans right there. You really don’t know?”
“Nope. No idea.”
“Strange.” Aureylian seemed like she might question him further, but then just sighed. “Do you need anything? I’m not exactly going to rescue you then go ‘okay you’re awake now get out into the wide and wild world’ without any help.”
“I definitely appreciate that. Some water would be nice.”
Aureylian stood and nodded. “I’ll get you some.” She left the room.
Vechs sighed in slight relief and took a moment to try and gather his thoughts.
He was mortal, not a worldbuilder anymore. He was fairly certain he was stuck in human form, but he didn’t want to try to transform anywhere where Aureylian might see him- she seemed like a sweet person and he didn’t want to scare the living daylights out of her. At least not yet.
He didn’t know if it was just him that had fallen, or if the others had too. He had a vague recollection of seeing another fireball, but maybe that was just his imagination. Assuming the others had fallen, he had no idea if they were dead or alive.
He needed to find them, but he had never learned how to survive on his own in his human form, so if he was truly stuck, all he had was what he had picked up from Paul and from testing his own maps.
The solution came through the door.
Aureylian returned with a cup of water, interrupting his thoughts. “Here.”
“Thanks.” Vechs gulped down some of the water. “Who knew falling from the sky and burning up in the atmosphere was such thirsty work?”
Aureylian laughed a little. “Do you do this often or something?”
“Nope. First time for everything.” He returned the cup. “Thank you for your kindness, but I-“ And idea hit him.
“You what?”
“I think some of my friends may have gone through the same thing I did. I’m not sure, though, and I’m worried about them. I have no idea if they’re okay or where they are and I don’t even know where I am.”
“We’re in the kingdom of Illian, near the border with Valdrar.”
Vechs didn’t recognize either of those kingdoms.
“We had…a base, in a mountain in Traz’madar. Do you know where that is?”
“Yeah! If you cross Illian, it borders Traz’madar on the other side. It’s far, though. You got shot really far.”
“I know.” Vechs said glumly. “I hope my friends are okay…”
“I hope so too.” Aureylian hesitated. “Do you want help searching for them?”
Vechs looked surprised. “You’d do that?”
“Of course! I can’t just let someone in need stumble out of my house without any assistance!”
Vechs smiled at her. “Thank you. That means a lot.”
“You’re welcome. We can look tomorrow, though. It’s the middle of the night.”
“It is?”
“Yes!”
“Oh.” Vechs crossed his arms. “Dammit.”
“You get some rest, okay? I’m going to go sleep on the couch.”
“Oh, shit, am I taking your bed?”
“Yes, you are, but it’s fine! You’re a little bruised and beaten and you fell out of the sky! I think I can sleep on the couch once and I’ll be okay.”
Aureylian would hear none of his protests and eventually just left, shutting the door on him. He pulled a face at the closed door, but moments later she opened it again.
“Good night!”
“Good night.”
~~~
Vechs awoke early the next morning, extremely hungry. All he’d eaten yesterday was the muffin he’d swiped from Paul.
Paul. He hoped he was okay.
Vechs got up and looked around the room, this time actually taking in its contents.
It was extremely pink. Vechs realized he’d never really been in a girl’s room before, and not one of the Mindcrackers had had an obsession with pink and sparkly glitter.
There was absolutely nothing wrong with that, but, once again, he noted that it was an odd design choice. Each to their own, he supposed, and the large G on Guude’s shirt was still weirder.
He also hoped Guude was okay.
He exited the room and went down the stairs, to where Aureylian was already waiting. She had eaten and had saved some toast for him.
“Morning.” he greeted, sitting down at the table somewhat awkwardly. Was there some special way he had to greet girls, or was it the same? He hadn’t really interacted with one before.
“Good morning. Here! I made some toast.” Aureylian shoved a plate of slightly burned toast into his hands. He thanked her and devoured it quickly, making her look a little scared. “You should have asked for something last night if you were this hungry.”
“I didn’t think to.” Vechs chose not to remark on her word choice and how it could be taken in favor of not offending her. She had offered him her help, and he was determined to at least figure out what kind of jokes he could make around her before making them.
Or at least wait until he knew her more than a few hours.
“I want to look for my friends.” he said only moments later.
“I think we should look around the area before going anywhere. Maybe you were all stuck around here, and it was just you that fell from the sky?”
Vechs nodded. She had good sense. He was pretty sure that wasn’t how it went down, but to be honest, he couldn’t be certain about anything at the moment. Aureylian led him outside and showed him the forest around them. “I think we’ll have better results if we split up. If I see anyone, I’ll ask if they know Vechs…what did you say your last name was?”
“Davion.”
“Vechs Davion, then. Meet back here in two hours?”
Vechs nodded in agreement.
“Don’t get lost.” she advised, smiled, then disappeared into the trees.
Vechs wondered if girls emitted an aura that did weird things to you when they smiled. Shrugging it off as an aftereffect of falling from the sky, he turned around and walked into the forest.
Two minutes later, he realized that he didn’t have a weapon. He wasn’t sure if Aureylian did or not- he didn’t look- but he didn’t trust the safety of the place. He grabbed a tree branch and kept going.
After about half an hour, he figured he wasn’t going to find anyone. He had been careful not to get lost, so he knew the way back, and he decided that nothing bad could come of just trying to go monstrous.
Nothing worked.
No matter what Vechs tried, he just couldn’t change into his monstrous form. He could feel it there, hovering at the edge of his mind, but he just couldn’t quite reach it. He stomped a foot in frustration and kept walking, still trying to reach it.
He almost didn’t notice when he heard quite cursing and bad-tempered muttering. He backtracked a little and found that it was coming from his right, within a huge patch of thick shrubbery. Someone was trying to cut their way through, and the voice was getting louder.
That voice was familiar, somehow. Vechs strained to hear the voice better but it was too quite. He was about to call out when a gray blade slashed open the bushes in front of him and the figure was revealed, locking eyes with Vechs. The figure spoke.
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me.”
