Monstrous (Chapter Eleven)
Wednesday, March 11th, 2015 01:33 pmNot a lot happens in this chapter but it's long anyway, and everything that DOES happen is pretty important. Some of it will be relevant very soon, some of it not so much.
Hopefully I did everyone justice in this chapter, I'm a little shaky on how I wrote a couple of people here.

Chapter Eleven
Mindcrack Territory, Vortex. July 26, year 323 Minecraftia time. Time instance 483Z.
Vechs’s eyes snapped open and he sat up abruptly, almost slamming his skull into Paul’s.
“Woah, hey now, easy! You’re okay!” Paul leaned back. “You’ve had a hard shock, and-“
Vechs took a sharp breath and his eyes widened as his gaze settled on something.
His hands.
Not his claws. Not the red scales.
Pale, human hands.
“Vechs, we don’t know-“
“How did this happen?” Vechs interrupted, moving his hands to look at them better. He looked over himself and confirmed what he had figured.
He was human.
“I don’t know.” Paul confessed. “Guude said something about you not being knocked out immediately, but you did something, he’s not sure what, and you transformed before passing out.”
Vechs swung his legs out of bed and when he stood he was quite glad that he had clothes on. He realized, with a pang, that it was the same outfit he had been wearing that final day he was human. His helmet, toolbelt, and goggles were now on a table beside the bed. He resized them to his human size and put them on as well.
“I don’t know how this happened.” he confessed.
“Think. What did you do?”
“I...I didn’t…” Vechs frowned. “Wait. Maybe I did do something…I can’t remember.”
“I know a lot of energy lines have been unlocked for you, but I need you to scan through them and find the one that you used. You did something earlier today, and we need to know what. You don’t need to transform again, just-“
“I want to.”
“What?”
“I don’t think I like being a human so much anymore. I feel small and weak and defenseless. I’m used to my wings, claws, and fire breath. Although…” He pulled a screwdriver out of his toolbelt and twirled it through his fingers- “It’s easier to work these things.” He put it back and looked Paul in the eye.
“If I can figure out how to change back and forth- and I better be able to, I’ll be pissed if I can’t- I can really start to get things done quickly.”
“Not to mention you’re more powerful.”
Vechs grinned. “That’s right! I almost forgot! I can DO shit now!”
“You couldn’t before?”
“Well, yes, but-“ Vechs took a step forward and fell, barely catching himself on the table. “Need to…not do that. Need to get used to human for again.” He grumbled and steadied himself.
After trying unsuccessfully to walk for a few more minutes, he yanked on the energy line he had fucked around with previously, hoping for results in that department.
He grinned widely when the swirl of fire danced around him and he changed back to his preferred monstrous form. He quickly adjusted the sizes of his hat, toolbelt, and goggles so as not to break them. He stretched and smiled at Paul.
“This is fucking great.”
Paul grinned back. “I agree. Now you can get your horrible and dangerous terrains done faster.”
“With goal system.” Vechs reminded him.
“With goal system.” Paul agreed.

Over the next week, Vechs and Chad got used to their more powerful abilities. They handled this rather easily, except for Vechs’s troubles with his human form. He regained the ability to walk and do basic things, but he was still a bit shaky with it due to how differently his two forms were built. Paul was optimistic that Vechs would be able to handle it, but the younger worldbuilder wasn’t so sure.
“It’s so difficult.” he fumed to Chad, who had quickly become a good friend of his. “I was human for about two decades and yet after two years as a monster, I totally forget how to be one.”
“It just takes time and practice, is all.”
“I suppose.” Vechs was human at the moment and was still trying to grasp how to open a bottle. He finally made a disgusted sound and tossed it to Chad to have him open it.
“I dunno, maybe you shouldn’t worry too much about it. Focus on your chunks, maybe. You were talking about trying something new soon?” Chad opened the bottle for him.
“Yeah. I have an idea for how to make them a bit…better, I suppose, as well as Paul’s idea of a goal system.”
“You’ll have to rework the ones you already have.”
“I might just scrap them and start over with the same theme once I finish the one I’ve just started. They’re not that great anyway.”
Chad shrugged. “Your call.” He handed the bottle back to Vechs.
~~~
It had been a month since his transformation from temporary to full worldbuilder. His human form still posed some trouble but he had mostly gotten the hang of it. He was, as Chad had suggested, more focused on his chunks.
Vechs was trying something new, and he was testing it on Sea of Flame, the first one he had finished. He was in his monstrous form, eyes closed, deeply mentally immersed in the energy lines of the place. He gently pulled at them in different orders, gathering them together and putting a little of his own energy into the mix, focusing, breathing, creating. He couldn't mess up; this was incredibly dangerous.
He took a deep breath and released it into the swirling vortex of energy he had formed. The energy condensed into a shape and became visible as he put the final touches on it, leaving a piece of his own energy within it. He could restore his energy, but with this piece within, he wasn’t certain what the reaction would be.
When he opened his eyes, he found a sphere of condensed, breathing energy before him, swirling with orange and red and gray. It had about a four inch diameter and floated several inches above his hands.
Vechs felt like he was holding a living, breathing creature. And in a sense, he was.
The heart of a living chunk.
Vechs let out a shaky laugh. If he had messed up with that much energy, he could have destroyed both himself and his creation. But here it was, the fruit of his efforts; a power source, not exactly alive, that allowed his chunk to adapt and change the threats it threw at whoever was trying to survive within.
He had to get Paul to test this out. But first, he needed a safe place for the orb.
His room would do. No one went in without permission and they were definitely not allowed to touch anything in each other’s rooms. He left his chunk and carefully walked through the portal room and down the hall (which had been made taller for his convenience, as even in human form he sometimes hit his head on the doorframe), moving slowly so he didn’t upset the delicate energy balance.
Most Mindcrackers were within their chunks, but one wasn’t, and he could feel the volatile mass of energy that Vechs carried.
Etho practically stepped out of the shadows to walk beside Vechs. “What is that?”
Vechs jumped and almost dropped it. “Geez, Etho, you scared the shit out of me! Don’t do that!”
“Sorry. I could feel its energy from across Spawntown. Don’t tell me you’re putting it in your room.”
“Safest place for it.”
“At least put an energy shell around it so that not every worldbuilder from here to the far end of the Vortex can feel its pull!”
“What?”
“Oh, here.” Etho made a vague hand motion and a translucent shell like glass formed around the sphere, immediately dampening its energy output. Both Mindcrackers seemed to subconsciously relax.
“Stuff like that is dangerous, Vechs. How did you get it?”
“I made it. It’s a way for my Super Hostile chunks to adapt to the person within and detect the best threat to throw at them.”
“You mean they’re alive?”
“Not exactly. It’s like a complicated system, but without redstone. It’s all in the energy lines. This is the focus of it and I want to put it safely in my room.”
“If that’s what you want to do, fine. But if we get invaded, your first priority should be to hide it and any others you might make. Those could be used as powerful weapons.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll keep it safe.” Vechs stopped in front of his room and said goodbye to Etho before going in. He formed a spot on the wall for it, a small metal holder that he could place it in. He put a small sign above it labeled “Sea of Flame” before sitting down on his bed. Now that he had it safely placed, he could feel the fatigue dragging him down. That had taken a lot out of him, a lot more than he expected. He gazed at the swirling flame and ash within the orb and pet his sleeping bat a little before lying down to get some rest.
The orb continued to swirl, and the chunk’s heart continued to live.
When he awoke, he planned to do the others that he had finished before continuing work on his current project. He also had ideas for other projects swirling around in his mind…
He was going to have a very busy existence for awhile.
