And the nether hub is season 4 ^-^ )

I woke up groggy and filled with the sort of pain that you get a couple of days after a huge beatdown. Except it really wasn’t like that. I felt like I had spent ages getting beaten. Something jagged was jabbing into my back, which only added to the pain. I slowly opened my eyes, only to be assaulted by red. Red, craggy stone, fiery red lava, red everywhere. I shielded my eyes, trying to understand where I was. Sitting up, I saw trees and flowers, adapted to the fire, thriving in this harsh environment. I leaned against one of the trees, trying to determine whether or not I could handle being vertical. Deciding that I could, I braced myself against the tree and slowly stood up straight. That’s when I realized that I had no clue how I had gotten here. I mentally ran through everything I knew. You would think that would be quite the lengthy quest, but for me at the moment, it was simple. My name is Severin, and I had been banished to Hell.

That wasn’t all I knew; I had some bits and pieces of information but they were slippery, and I couldn’t link them to any other relevant information. I looked down and noticed what I was wearing a ridiculous ninja costume for some reason. Upon further inspection, I found it to be well made and very well worn, with plenty of ash ground into the fabric, like I used to get too close to explosions. Why would I do that? I also had this strange half balaclava on. I had the feeling that I was strangely attached to this piece of my attire and never, ever took it off. Well, I was banished for a reason. I had a feeling that to get back, I had to burn every part of who I used to be. I yanked it off, then proceeded to take off my jacket and headband as well. I threw all of it in a nearby fire, and as the clothes turned to ash and floated away, the old me burned as well, erasing my old identity, and leaving room for me, and who I’ll become.

Leaving the smoldering ash behind me, I clutched at the flimsy underclothes I was lucky enough to have been wearing at the time. Starting to find myself again, I started walking. It never really occurred to me that I was walking anywhere in particular until I realized that I was walking on a path towards some sort of dark castle, looming and stinking a unique stench. I vaguely remembered walking towards this castle for some reason, where I half remember a fight, then nothing.

I was tempted to go to it to find some sign of life, but decided against it. Powerful magic was needed for the memory wipe that I had received, and I could feel strong, disturbing magic in the air like honey in a spiderweb.

I left the path and found a Fortress, home to many pains. Not an untouched one, because I could see machinery and farms poking up into the horizon. Unsure what I would find in there, I went in carefully, checking around every corner before I rounded it. I figured that anyone from the Overworld would be heading here for its many treasures. I found some chests with some crude leather armor. I put them on, but couldn’t find any boots. After a while, I found an elaborate blaze grinder. The veins of metal running through the contraption spoke to me, telling me of how the machinery worked. Intrigued by how this could be happening, I found the redstone entry door to where the wiring was hidden. Seeing the wiring made everything click. There was some sort of magic around me, probably tied to the metal in the pistons.

I heard a person outside, trying to activate the deathtrap, but couldn’t because I had broken the wire in a couple of places to get to where I was. I climbed out and was met face to face with an engineer wearing heavy green goggles. His head tilted in confusion. “And who are you?” he said.

I grinned, trying to hide the sheepishness, charming the stranger. I stuck out my hand. “My name is Severin, sorry about breaking the grinder. I put it back together, so it should work now.” I smiled, moving out of the way.

I took a good long look at him. He had filthy grey overalls and a ripped and burned red tee. Though if you look closely enough, you can see a double image. There was a hazy man superimposed over the physical man, as if there were two, occupying the same body. He wandered around the room, looking me over, making sure that I hadn't done anything to damage the machine or otherwise disgrace it. The shadow man followed him, almost seeming to lead at times.

He looked up and smiled, and stuck out his hand. "My name is Vechs. I was actually here when Etho graced us with his presence here. When he lost his throne, I was devastated." He shook his head, trying to clear out the bad thoughts. His grin returned and he hit the button. The blazes rushed forward, straining to set everything on fire. While waiting for the chamber to be filled, he pointed to a spot of what seemed to be glittery, pure gold ore in the stone itself. “That’s where he touched it.” He sighed, lost in memory. Looking up again, he continued, “With that touch, this entire machine became sacred to him." I had to investigate this new piece of information. I climbed up on a table nearby and managed to get my finger in the old god’s. A perfect match. Vechs saw this and recoiled. Not bothering to shut down the kill trap, he bundled me out and had me racing down a railroad track, not even bothering to call a cart.

We came into this massive room, elegantly designed with glowstone and hardened clay. I was hurried to a tall portal in the center. I backtracked, pulling my arm out of the engineer’s grip. “What do you want with me?”

"I want you back on your throne. Welcome home, Etho."

~~~~~~
I stopped dead in my tracks. “Etho?” The name sounded more familiar, more common every time I heard it. But it wasn’t mine. I shook my head, clearing the confusion. “No,” I said forcefully, “I can’t be. I’m just a redstoner. That’s all.”
Vechs looked at me up and down, shrugged then turned to walk off. I caught his arm, “Where are you going?” I insisted, desperate for some company.
He smiled mischievously, “Only to tell the council that Etho’s back. I’ll be back for you. Eventually.” He walked giddily out of the blaze trap and out to where his portal waited.
I drooped watching him disappear into nothing, leaving only the wispy image of a bat, spirally toward the roof of the nether. Desperate, I jumped in the remnants of the portal, trying to follow Vechs back to the land of the living. I was flung back with an incredible force, all that was accomplished was the deepening of the purple hues on my bum.
I decided to wander some more, this time to ponder what would have to be done to impress the gods to grant me access once again to regular life. I came up with several ideas, and threw most of them away immediately, save for one that I kept going back to. I would have to figure out who I had fought, then beat that party in some fashion.
It was apparent that this mysterious other party had considerable talent with a sword, but so did I to come out with all my limbs. I left the area, not planning to go anywhere, but needing to move. Soon enough, I came across cobblestone mounds in the magenta rock, surely protecting more delicate materials underneath.
I found Vechs inside, waiting, full of cheek, as if he knew I was going to end up here. He was so excited to tell me about what he had bargained. Bouncing, he told me, “You will not believe what the gods told me!” Vechs squealed in his giddy delight, kept going, “The rest of the council said that you can’t come back until you prove yourself worthy again.” I found myself thrown off by what he said. I found myself determined to make it back among the gods. But what the heck was I supposed to do in the Nether?
After a while, I started wondering what I should do. I could build a new contraption, but I had no supplies. I could try and battle the man that put me here, but I failed the last time. The only real thing that I could do was to be the pathfinder, to help those who would be lost in this hell.
It never felt real right for me to be doing this work, I did it anyway. But I did it for hundreds of years, seemingly unnoticed by the gods. Then one day, I was helping a young fellow find his way back to his personal blaze farm.
When I first saw him, there was this consciousness that appeared out of nowhere. Hey, it's Guude, wonder how the Water Tower is going? I jumped back. He- Guude- raised his eyebrow. I apologized quickly. We walked in silence for a while. I tried to make sense of that voice. It was not mine; I had never heard it before. I figured I’d probably never see this guy again, so I took a chance and asked him.
"Are you Guude, perchance?" I ventured, trying to kill the silence, overtaking the area around us. He nodded, "I'm surprised that you didn't recognize me earlier. That's why I like you. You treat me like I'm normal, not what I actually am." We walked for a while quietly, when he spoke up again, "Strangely enough, I recognize you too. There's someone I want you to meet. Let's go to the hub instead."
I adjusted our path to the domes and led in silence. The rest of the walk was quiet, save for one ghast, which was executed quickly. When we got to his portal, he handed me a bracelet and told me to put it on. I did so, then followed him into the portal, both excited and apprehensive. While in the portal, I could feeling it trying to expel me back into the fiery dimension. The bracelet flared and anchored me in place, letting me stay on path to the Overworld.
This would be the first time in three hundred forty five years that I would feel sunshine on my face, that I would feel grass between my toes. The sunshine was brighter than I remembered. I squinted, trying to focus on the man that I saw. When my eyes adjusted, I saw not a man, but a cyborg creeper in a lab coat. He extended his hand. When I reached out to shake it, he smiled and grabbed me up in a big bear hug. He starting talking nonstop in his thick German accent, excited to see me. He slung his arm around me and led me to a grand quartz hall, Guude following quietly behind us. After we entered and sat down, twelve others joined us in the room each move into their own seat. Looking around, I saw that there are fifteen chairs, two more than there were in attendance. One of the extra ones was dark and fiery. The other was made of raw gold and iron inlaid rough diamond.
I stood back as the meeting was called to order. There was some playful jabs and they quietened down, the meeting truly beginning. They talked for awhile about some housekeeping, then Guude motioned me forward.
“This is Severin. He was banished to hell almost four hundred years ago. Before that, he sat among us wearing the raw gold crown.” I was shocked to hear this, but it rang true. I was Etho at some point in my past. My revelation went unnoticed to the others, who kept talking, debating about whether not to accept me back to the Overworld, and back among them.
It was at that moment that I noticed another entity, or consciousness, either in my head or actually in the room. He was nudging me, sort of pointing at Guude and going, yeah, he’s got it, you should listen to him.
In the conversation there were a couple naysayers. The rest of the group was very excited at the idea of having me back. They talked for a little longer, Doc called for a vote. It started to his left each one taking their turn to say either aye or nay.
I was escorted out while the votes were being taken. One of the commonfolk guards led me out and down the corridor to a wardrobe, where I was given a wet rag to clean myself off with, along with a nice robe and moccasin- type slippers. “So what was the result? Do I go back to the Nether?” They gave me no answer. I pleaded with them, begging for some sort of answer. They gave me nothing. When I was finished, they led me back to the main hall. After a while, a pageboy ran and whispered something to the guard with me. The guard looked up and whispered something to the heavens.
I stood in the center, hating having all of these people I half remembered staring at me, judging me. I decided to focus on Doc and Guude. I half trusted them. “Severin, you were banished not by something you did, but to rid us of a greater threat. For that we are grateful, and would gladly welcome you among us once again. Will you accept?”
The voice spoke up again, I want my throne back. But if you want a turn, I don't blame you. I stole you for long enough, but the things we did together, they were epic. I saw flashes of laughter, and good times with friends. I saw when I - or rather, Etho- touched the blaze grinder. I was the pride of the people, the champion to the commoner. So have you made up your mind? May I take my place?
I stepped before the council again. "I am grateful for your invitation, but I have a request. I will allow Etho his throne if and only if I am allowed a life as well. I believe that with our recent history, that we can get along quite well."
Doc looked at Guude, who looked at the rest of the circle. They each nodded their acceptance, followed lastly by Guude and Doc nodding theirs. Guude smiled, "I believe we have a consensus!" He stood, along with everyone else.They all raised their arms to the heavens in unison. He shouted to the heavens a phrase in an indecipherable foreign tongue, then the common language: 'Etho, we welcome you home!'
When they finished saying that, I felt this incredible outpouring, as if earlier when I first recognized Guude was just a dribble. This was the rest of the flood. But I could tell somehow that it wasn't all of it. Etho must of seen that this was part of the deal. When the flood lessened, I mentally stepped aside for a moment, figuring that he'd want to greet his friends after being gone for so long. This was good. They all have their friend back and the rest of the world has their god back. How I would fit in, though, would be challenge.
Etho had some time to walk the world again. A couple of days after his return I managed to find my way to sunlight. Careful to stay just under the surface, I saw he was with a gorgeous red haired goddess. Noticing a change in her man, she smiled at me. “Thank you, Severin, for letting Etho share you.”
I nodded, then stepped back out, letting Etho and his goddess have some privacy. When it was safe again, Etho opened the door for me. He was positively joyous. “I take it she's the special one?” It was because of her that I lost my throne. “And you still want to be with her?” I asked incredulously. I phrased that wrong. I didn’t lose my throne because of her, I lost it for her. It was that or watch her be trapped with someone who had no care for her. Etho had no emotion at this, as if he was just recounting a distant country’s history. They knew of my plan to offer her immortality. While I was gone, they offered her in my stead. She was happy to accept knowing that it was what I wanted.
--Two Hundred Fifty Years Later--
I gotta admit, there have been some times when I wanted so badly to boot Etho out on his stubborn ass. But we managed to work something out. It was simple. He gets the first part of the week, I get the second. Unless there’s some sort of schedule conflict, then we switch days. If Etho has a thing on the fifth day, he gets it and I get the second day instead. The grief we had before figuring that out. Hey! It wasn’t all my fault. Look at you playing the innocent. They were waiting hours for me to show up at that consecration!
