He's not imaginary! ~ Chapter 1
Monday, January 5th, 2015 07:53 pmSo, it's a thing! I would explain more, but... it's kinda spoilers for the story. But, if the title doesn't give it away before you even read it, I hope the thing comes across as at least slightly surprising. Maybe? No? Okay...
Anywho! On to the thing! Thanks for watching, hope you enjoyed it! (wait... <.<)
"Pause, time to wake up for your little date thing with the boy from down the street," a quiet voice into his ear, rousing him from the last touches of the good night sleep he had had, dragging him into the sunny afternoon of the first weekend after school had started again.
"Ugh, shut up, Etho," Pause whined, pulling the sheets back up over his head and feigning tiredness, despite being fully awake, and Etho knew.
"Don't be a wuss, Pause. Go and get dressed before that guy Seth gets here for your date that you agreed to," Etho taunted him from above his left shoulder, quickly appearing next to his right with a pair of jeans, nudging Pause first in the bicep, then when it stopped getting Pause to react, jabbing him in the ribs.
"Ah! What was that for, Etho!?" Pause shot up and yelled, the covers flying off and leaving Pause naked but for his boxers. Etho threw the jeans at him and covered his eyes.
"Get ready, because I think he's almost to your door. Your mom will only tolerate someone that dim-witted for so long before slamming the door in his face, so you'd better get cracking," Etho called out from across the room, peering out the tall windows. Only so much she can handle? Pause thought. What about me having to do out with this guy!? He's worse than a bag of rocks when it comes to socializing and hitting on people, not to mention he only ever talks about red stone and what he can do with it...
"You were the one who said yes to him, Pause," Etho chimed in, grinning every bit as wide as his jaw would allow. Pause grumbled as he continued to get ready, pulling a shirt down over his shoulders and slipping his arms through the sleeves, followed by a navy blue hoodie and a pair of black and grey socks. Just as he was opening the door to head downstairs, the door bell rang loudly throughout his house, so Etho decided to give him a "friendly" push in the right direction, which happened to mean pushing Pause down the stairs. Pause fell and flipped head over heels down at least ten steps before smacking his legs into the banister at the landing, about halfway down the flight of stairs.
"Are you alright, honey?" Pause's mother asked hesitantly, peeking around the bottom railing of the stairs to see if he was well enough to walk. Pause held up a hand with a thumbs up before sighing audibly and flopping his hand onto his chest and picking himself up.
"Hello, Pause," Seth Bling, the one person he would rather not have seen at all today, let alone go on a date with. "Are you ready?"
"Yeah, yeah, I'm ready. Just let me get on my shoes, and I'll meet you out by the street. Where we going?" Pause asked, trying not to let his short fuse show through his fake smile.
"The pizza place down the street. That okay with you?" Seth replied, a sincere smile on his face, obviously proud of himself for thinking of such a great and simple place to eat at. Pause inwardly cringed, though, because he hated that pizza place. It always had too much grease on the pizza, and even though he didn't mind some, or even a good deal of it, having a slice of pepperoni pizza that was nearly drowned in it wasn't on his list of "favorite foods".
"I love it there!" Pause choked out, trying not to let his grimace show through, instead coming across as very stiff reaction.
"I'll order you an extra large with everything on it, Pause," Etho taunted, whisking out of the house, around Seth, who stood in the doorframe, leaving it looking like Pause was giving him the most evil look he could muster instead of Etho.
"You okay, Pause? Did I do something to upset you?" Seth asked quickly, reflexively reaching out towards Pause. Pause quickly recovered from the glare however, and recoiled slightly at Seth's movement towards him.
"O-oh, no, I'm fine, Seth, thanks. Nothing's wrong."
"Alright. Well, thank you, Mrs. Unpause, we'll be back in an hour or two," Seth politely addressed Pause's mother as he left with Pause, Etho nearby, giggling and smirking at Pause, who could only hope his thoughts of "I'll get you later" could reach his friend.

Pause choked down the last bite of his slice of pizza and downed the remainder of his glass of water to get the taste out of his mouth.
"How was it? Do you want another slice, Pause?" Seth asked, ever his well-mannered self, but Pause couldn't have said no fast enough.
"No, no, I'm fine. I don't need another piece," he shot out, shaking his head vigorously at the same time. He collected himself and added, "it was fine. Thanking me out to lunch like this, Seth."
"Oh, it's no problem. It's great to spend time with you like this. I'd be happy to swing by tomorrow or maybe some other time to do it again," Seth commented, eyes shining in hope and happiness. Pause inwardly cringed at the thought of having to spend another meal with Seth or this pizza, but once again, kept his reaction to himself.
"Oh, I'm busy tomorrow, but maybe another time," Pause said, trying to let him down lightly, as he wasn't sure how he might take it after he'd just paid for a meal for the both of them that he's absolutely been disgusted by.
"Oh, of course. Want me to walk you home?" Seth asked, getting up after paying and leaving a tip at the table.
"Seth, you don't have to. Your house is the complete opposite direction from mine and it'll probably take you at least twenty minutes to get home, and my house is just a minute or two. Thank you for offering though. Have a good night!" Pause said, slowly heading towards the door as he made up a logical excuse to keep away from Seth. Etho was waiting outside the door to the pizza place, grinning smugly, having expected the results of the meeting to go as they had.
"Quite the lady killer, Pause. Oh, wait, you don't get ladies to fall for you at that all-guys school you go to, now do you?" Etho shot at him with no remorse, striking a nerve in Pause.
"Shut it, Etho! I'm tired of your shit! So, just leave me alone!" Pause shouted angrily before he took off running.
"Pause?" Seth called after, having emerged from the pizza place at the sound of Pause's yelling. Etho simply stood there, frozen by the outburst. Seth looked down the street after Pause, before turning directly into Etho, and passing right through him, continuing on the path to his house.
"Pause, I- what have I done?" Etho whispered, his body reforming after Seth's contact had scattered him, and he walked back to Pause's house, but he kept himself transparent and barely formed to avoid Pause's notice. He didn't know how he would react to seeing him at that point, so he stayed outside on the front porch all night, sleeping in the wind, leaned up against the side of the house to keep from being blown to bits by the huge gusts every minute or two. Pause usually kept him shielded by his larger frame when it got windy like it was, Etho reminisced sadly, and gazed up at the light shining out of the window to Pause's bedroom, the sound of Pause's tears and sobs reaching his ears from even outside in the near gale-force winds.
And he felt even worse.
