Fanfic: Elemental

Upon first meeting her, most people tend to assume Aurey is a wind element. Light, whimsical, and seemingly without a care, like a summer breeze in spring; all characteristics of that type. And yes, she is all of those things, sometimes, but it’s not quite right. True wind elements know this. They can tell that the wind doesn’t curl around her fingers and caress her features like it does for them. (She’s seen Pyro when he’s calm enough to let the breeze nudge and bat at his hair like excited kitten’s paws, and she knows he could tell with her first breath that the skies didn’t call to her like that.)
The ones who get to know her learn pretty quickly that she doesn’t anger like the winds. They are like storms, clouding up swifter than a blink, but full of stinging, rolling laughter like thunder. Their words strike and pierce like lightning barbs and they grin mockingly through the duration of the squall from the safety of the calm in the eye.
No, that isn’t her. Aurey isn’t like that and never wants to be.
From there, opinions split. Half think she’s a nature and half thinks she’s a fire. As a whole, they are incorrect.
She can see where they’re coming from, though. Nature elements are (almost) all-loving, peaceful, and empathic. They’ll never harm a living being, though, and Aurey is willing to kill to survive. Her friends are, too. Nature elements are rare, and a good thing for it. Between the diet of less-filling food and tendency to go berserk when faced with the undead, it’s hardly a healthy existence. Aurey can sympathize with the whole “slaughter any undead to cross my path” thing, that happens to her, too, but “peaceful and empathic” aren’t the words people use to describe her. They call her “warm.” The difference is subtle, but important.
That’s where her friends get the fire element idea from. Her warmth, and her passion too, because that’s what fire elements are like. They put their hearts into everything they do, from their hobbies to love to simply living, full of pure, unfettered joy. But they put their hearts into everything, their misery and hatred, just as much as their euphoria and excitement. After everything it would be too much. She’s not built to handle such stark rawness on the inside, and sometimes it sounds just as empty as it is viciously, vividly vibrant.
So, no, she’s not nature and she’s not fire. Maybe something a little like the two, with perhaps a little dash of the free spirit of the sky. Then people make the connection. Warm and light and passionate and a little bit fiery. They watch her against the dawn as her hair becomes a tangled sheet of plasma and realize the sun has never left, for she is one. Her happiness shines through the overcast of dullness and sorrow, her endless energy fueled by fusion in the sky. Her heart still beats strong in the face of the hard vacuum of the world, every bit of pain and suffering leaves her with wiser eyes and nary a scratch on her smile. Storm, snow, rain, and shine, she always watches over her own and cares, because just like the Earth is her planet, her friends are hers to protect and empower.
The sun is virtually eternal. While she will one day die, because she will, perhaps in a blaze of explosive light, or perhaps with barely a flicker at the end of the universe, the slow, quiet sigh of order descending into chaos, she will be content knowing that she shone her light on all manner of hearts. For that is the purpose of the sun, to illuminate the dark and lighten the shadows and be a homing beacon across the galaxy for the hopeless and the lost.
