Fic - Through Flames and Fury

Through Flames and Fury
He laughed manically, thrusting his hands up in the air, spreading them wide. Flames erupted in the space between his hands, surging through the warm evening air like an angry monster, snapping and popping with its intensity. Aureylian squinted through the burn of the flames, eyes shielded slightly by the green-tinted goggles she wore.
"Love," he called, "Why do you do this? Why oppose me, when you could stand with me, and we could bring the world to its knees!"
"Vechs!" Aureylian yelled back, rubbing her hands together briskly. "This is not right! This is not what you wanted, Vechs!" Leaping back from a tongue of flame that rolled towards her, she thrust her hands out protectively in front of her. A flame burst to life, racing towards Vechs' fire. "Stand DOWN!"
"But RelRel," Vechs purred, voice deep and honey smooth. "I am the most powerful man alive right now. Why do you deny me so, RelRel?"
She had to stall. No matter how demented Vechs was, no matter how insane, or how mad he acted, there was one thing he was right about. Right now, in this moment, and most likely the many after, he was the most powerful man in existance. She would not stand a chance against his fire. Even as a Fire Elementalist herself, she would burn like a piece of paper in an inferno. None of her natural defenses would protect her. She had to stall. Her life depended on it.

"Get me the best Water guys you've got! Pure, mixed, mutants, doesn't matter! I've got one of my best people out in the field fighting for her life, consider this a favor I'm calling in, you know you owe me several times over. I'm sending you the coordinates now. Get on it!"

Even as her heart pounded in terror, pulse racing a million miles a minute, throat and lungs scorched by the heat, this had to be the best moment of her life. The adrenaline rocketing through her system was amazing, her movements were more fluid than they had ever been before, hands flying through the air. Fire burst to life out of nowhere, drawing on the heat of the air, the warmth of her body, the warmth of Vechs' fire.
She had loved him once. More than anyone or anything else in the world. They were the ultimate team, dispatched on the toughest of missions. Fighting him now, it was like dancing. She knew his every move. He knew all of hers. There was no way she was touching him, not in a lifetime. Just as such, he couldn't hope to scratch her.
However, in terms of sheer power, she was extremely outmatched. By now, all she was doing was deflecting. She couldn't take much more of this. Flipping backwards, Aureylian brought her hands backwards in a protective gesture, shielding herself in fire. Heat rolled over her, and for once in a lifetime, a bead of sweat dripped down her forehead.
"Avidya, Jsano, get in there! Arkas, cover them!" As Aureylian cautiously lowered her hands, she saw a masked, white haired figure run past her, a stream of water in his wake.
"Capture only basis!" Etho shouted, the smoldering grass around his feet turning brown and shriveled as he countered Vechs' flames with his own Element. "If you fear you are in danger, get out!"
"Etho!" Aureylian exclaimed. "About time!"
Etho chuckled. "You held out well, Aureylian. Our objective is to get you out safely, you're the greatest asset in this mission. Now fall back, Arkas should be covering you. We'll be right behind you, now go."
Aureylian nodded, retreating to where she saw Arkas deflecting bursts of flame with chunks of dirt he was summoning from the ground. As she neared him, Arkas knelt and slammed his palms to the dirt, a wall of hardened earth rumbling upwards to cover them both. Dusting his hands off, Arkas stood, nodding at Aureylian once.
"That should give us enough time to fall back," Arkas said. "Etho and the other should be falling back soon as well. It would be smart not to be here in the next five minutes."
"Agreed," Aureylian replied. "Vechs is... Not himself. It... He..." She gestured helplessly, twisting her fingers together in a motion of self-comfort. Arkas pulled her into a brief, but tight hug.
"We'll try our best to get him back," Arkas said in a firm tone. "But for now, we have to leave him be. It's too dangerous." He winced as his wall started crumbling, pulling Aureylian away. "Now come, we've got to get back to the rest of the team. They dashed back to where Avidya was waiting, absorbing every bit of moisture out of the air to create an impressive water orb, ready to fire at will.
However, the water orb was deemed unnecessary when all traces of fire suddenly ceased. The sky turned pitch black once again, spots of light dancing in front of everyone's eyes. The heat lingered however, a reminder of the events that had just passed. Etho and Jsano trudged over to them, both sweating with exertion.
"He fled," Jsano informed the three. "Not sure where he went. He used his fire as a distraction." Jsano scuffed the dirt with the toe of his boot, before shrugging nonchalantly. "I'm sure we'll find him sooner or later. Someone as power hungry as he is now is bound to turn up soon." Shooting a sympathetic look at Aureylian, Jsano walked off to the van he, Etho, Avidya, Arkas had used to get there.
Etho clapped a hand on Aureylian's shoulder. "Well, the reinforcements from the Hermits never arrived, but I think we did pretty well without them, yeah?" Noting her distant gaze, Etho shook her gently. "I'm sure we'll get him back soon," Etho said in a low tone. "We lost a very valuable person the day Vechs touched that gem. Once we can get him away from it, I'm sure he'll go back to normal. Now let's go back home."
Aureylian came out of her daze slowly, blinking languidly. "Home. Sounds good," she said quietly. Mustering a smile, she set off after Jsano.
"Don't worry Vechs," she muttered under her breath. "I'm going to get you back even if it costs me my life."
