So I was inspired by an old fluff piece that ratta did
Hope you like it!

It all started at the beginning of time, while the sun was fresh faced and the earth a newborn. Etho, the god of metallurgy, had met a beautiful maiden. She had long gorgeous reddish curls and loved to laugh. She had brightened his world in places even the god didn't know were dark.

After months of frolicking and childish romance, Etho had made his choice. He was going to offer her immortality, the chance to be his queen. The chance for her to become a goddess. The goddess of laughter.

Of course a love story sure as this wouldn't be the same without conflict. There was another god, one resentful and devious. Nebris, the god of darkness, had no one. What woman would want to spend the rest of her life in darkness. He had taken a liking to Etho's maiden. He hatched a plan. One to ensure that he would have a queen.

He gathered the ingredients needed for the incantation he was going to work. After hours of weaving the air with magic, Nebris lured both Etho and his soon to be queen to a deserted plain nearby both their thrones.

Nebris had set a banquet table, and not wanting to offend his guests, offered them something to eat. They enjoyed the food, but when they finished, the magic began.

Tendrils leaked from the shadows and gripped Etho's maiden, holding her by the throat. Nebris laughed, delighted his minions had answered his call. "And so the ruse ends!" He bellowed. "Fight me and best me, lest your queen becomes mine for eternity."

Etho, who had gotten too deep on the wine, straightened at the threat to his love. Suddenly sobered, he drew his diamond blade, Heart heavy, he walked to where Nebris stood. Even as children, he could never manage to beat the now god of darkness. But there was good news as well. Nebris had never beaten him either.

Nebris had long since gotten used to the constant adrenaline, but it still thrilled him. The clash of swords, the glancing blows, taunting his rival to reach the threshold neither could reach. By his estimates, they have been fighting for at least two centuries. The gods still looked as young as they started, but their prize, Etho's queen, still felt the effects of time. Normally, one of her stature could live to be five or six hundred years before feeling the hated effects, but Nebris' tendrils had sucked away at least three hundred years, leaving her frail, close to death. Etho glanced over, seeing her plight, let loose a mighty roar.

Seeing his lady, crumpled and dying gave the fighter new energy. Blocking and parrying like a mad man, his lady in the forefront of his brain. He felt something, his followers were up to something. Something big, something that could end this fight.

Nebris knew from the state of the maiden that the fight would be over soon. The beauty of his magic, with the strength to last all these years, he could do so many things. The. He felt a twinge in the back of his mind. His loyal followers were marching to Etho's throne to destroy it, put and end to the god, leaving him as the victor. "This will soon be over, my friend," Nebris shouted over the racket. "You will fade, and I shall claim the prize and endure, forever."

Etho smiled, realizing what was going to happen. "Forever may not be as long as you thought, fool."

He stepped back as he felt the throne magic disperse, taking with it the gift of immortality. In his last moments, he floated over to his love, took her hand, whispered to her. She smiled, said something, then kissed him. As they kissed, Etho turned completely into living gold, which spread across their connection into his lady, metamorphosing her as well. They ended their kiss, looked up at the sky and dispersed, still holding hands.

Nebris, watching silently, was enraged. The only reason he had fought that long was with the promise that he would get Etho's lady. Then he felt it. The cold, liquid shadows, lapping at his feet. His wonderful minions, eager to serve him always. But they were heavier, more lethargic. And, they were growing, encasing him, dissolving him. Rage filled, he looked toward where his throne once stood. Sitting on the ruined seat, was a raw chunk of gold ore, Etho's signature, left by his followers. That was the last thing the Dark god saw, that his rival had finally beat him.

So went the two gods, one fighting for honor, the other coveting what he could never have. The opposites that were always equal, equalized through the actions of mortals.
