Like When We Were Kids
Monday, August 18th, 2014 10:43 pmOOoohhh look, PauseUnBeef stuff! :D
It ended up being shorter than I thought it was going to be... That seems to happen a lot.
I haven't written any Pause/Beef stuff before, so I don't really know if this turned out or not.
Anywhoosies, I hope you enjoy.
The tree was there since before Pause and Beef were born. As kids, they spent every day of their summer sitting under it. Although it technically wasn’t, the two claimed the tree as their own. They would sit on the lowest branch and eat the bag lunches their mothers packed for them. Sometimes, Pause and Beef would sit on opposite sides of the tree. That was only when they were in fights, though, and those never lasted long. The two would spend hours in the tree's abundant shade, talking and laughing. Their parents thought they were weird, just sitting there all day, but Pause and Beef couldn’t care less. They were happy.
As time passed, they visited the tree less and less. After graduating high school, both he and Beef became busy with work and personal things. A few years ago, Pause thought it would be fun to work. Well... more fun than school anyways. Boy, was he wrong. Pause walked by the tree every day on his way home from work. Usually, Pause would stop to admire the tree as he passed by, but today he didn’t bother looking. Sometimes he felt disappointed that he and his best friend were growing apart. Growing up did that to people, he guessed. It was that time in their lives where they had to stop acting like kids.
Pause laughed to himself, what was he thinking? Screw growing up, being a kid was way more entertaining.

“Beef!”
Pause stepped into the butcher shop, causing the bell above the door to ring. The cool air brushed against his arms and gave him goosebumps. Beef looked up from his magazine.
“Uh, Pause… aren’t you supposed to be at work?”
“I called in sick, there was something I wanted to talk to you about.”
“Okay, what?” Beef asked, confused.
“You know The Tree?” Pause leaned against the counter.
“Of course,” Beef raised an eyebrow. Where was Pause going with this?
“Come climb it with me! We never made it up to the top.”
“Right now?” Beef asked, surprised. Pause responded with a nod and a smile. “But I’m working!”
“It’ll be just like when we were kids! C’mon, please.”
Pause gave Beef a pleading look, causing Beef to sigh. If he left in the middle of work, that could mean losing his job. He could just say it was an emergency, although he wasn’t the best liar. He tapped his fingers against the clear glass and stared up at the ceiling. He sighed again, causing Pause’s eyes to fill with disappointment. Oh well, business was slow today and he was very bored.
“Alright, fine,” Beef hopped over the counter and slung an arm around Pause.
“Aw yeah! Let’s go then,” Pause pushed the door open.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beef bent his neck to get a full view of the tree. He had to shield his eyes from the sun in order to see. He never wore sunglasses like Pause did, he usually ended up losing them. Pause grabbed a low branch and pulled himself up, he swung his legs over and sat with his legs dangling down. He had a huge grin on his face, just like he always did.
“You coming or not?” Pause shifted on the branch impatiently.
“Yeah man,” Beef pulled himself up and steadied himself on the branch.
Pause was above Beef by a few feet, he was more nimble than Beef was. Little bits of bark rained down on him. The crisp leaves rustled in the wind, the smell of autumn was very faint. They were about half way up the tree when Beef realized something and stopped.
“Hey, Pause?”
“Hm?”
“We, uh, should stop climbing.” Beef looked up to find Pause staring at him.
“Why, you’re not scared, are you?”
“What? No! It’s just…” He tried to think of a reason to prevent Pause from reaching the top, but failed.
“I see, you don’t want to repeat what happened in fourth grade!” Pause taunted, making Beef turn red.
“You just won’t let that go, will you?”
“Nope!” Pause said, matter-of-factly.
In fourth grade, Pause had managed to convince Beef to climb the tree with him. They were about a third of the way to the top when Beef lost his grip. He fell out of the tree and hit the ground with a thud and a soft crack. He ended up with a broken ankle and a sprained wrist, which Pause found extremely funny for some reason. He never let it go, either. He always brought it up when given the opportunity. What he never told Pause, however, was that he secretly practiced climbing the tree every night after that. If he could get better at climbing, maybe Pause would finally drop the subject. He had made it to the top multiple times, but he kept it to himself. Pause absolutely could not get up to the top, Beef had to stop him in order to save himself from some serious embarrassment.
Beef reached up and grabbed one of Pause’s ankles. Pause tried to tug his foot away, but Beef’s grasp was tight. Pause had to hold on to the trunk of the tree so he wouldn’t lose his balance. He glared down at Beef, who seemed very concerned and worried.
“C’mon, what’s up with you? Let go of my foot…”
“Pause, please.” Beef begged, “Let’s go back down.”
“You said you would do this,” Pause said quietly.
“I know, its just-”
“Save it. If you don’t want to come, fine. I’m doing this.”
Pause shook off Beef’s hand and quickly started climbing the rest of the way up. Beef climbed up after him, trying to get close enough to apologize. The moonlight made everything look gray. The wind had died down, making everything around them completely still. Beef climbed in silence as he slowly made it up to the top where Pause was now sitting. He expected Pause to be angry, but instead a small smirk crossed his face.
“This is why you didn’t want me to climb up here?” Pause traced the lines of the carving with his index finger. Beef was extremely embarrassed, his hands were clammy and his face felt hot.
“That was a long time ago… I was a dumb kid.”
As most kids did, Beef had carved a heart into the top branch with P + B written inside it. It was stupid, really. Beef was busy mentally beating his fourth grade self into the dirt when he felt Pause grab his hand. Pause’s fingers wrapped around Beef’s hand and squeezed his palm gently.
“You weren’t a dumb kid.”
“Uh, Pause?”
“Just enjoy it,” Pause closed his eyes. “I want to be a kid for a little bit longer.”
Beef squeezed Pause’s hand back. “Yeah, me too.”
