--------- Chapter 1 ---------

Aureylian sat there on the warm rocks by the hot springs humming quietly to
herself. It was nearly two in the afternoon. She had better be getting back soon. Otherwise she wouldn't make it to town before the gates closed that evening and then she'd have to persuade the guards to let her in.

Sighing she began to gather her things, returning her sabers to the twin scabbards on her back. Next, she put on her belt and proceeded to hide her daggers, one in each boot and up each sleeve along with the three on her belt. When she was done, she reached down and scooped up some of the soot left over from the fire she had burnt to cook the boar she had caught last night.

She sighed again when she recalled that boar. It had been huge, possibly the biggest she had seen in a long time. When she found it, around five in the evening and she had gone down to the bend in the river to check her traps, and was shocked when she saw the nearly three hundred pound boar with his rear leg caught in the snare. She quickly recovered from her surprise and drew one of her sabers, and a dagger, it was amazing that the trap had held under such tremendous strain. She considered letting the beast go but he would most likely turn on her if she did so either injuring or even killing her.

Then she sheathed her saber and drew another one of her throwing daggers so that she had one in each hand. She began to advance slowly, not wanting to startle the animal because even though his leg was caught, he could easily reach her with his tusks. Then she had an idea, the best vantage point would be from the tree on her left, plus if she climbed a tree the boar would not be able to reach her with its tusks. She quickly climbed the tree so that she was about seven feet off the ground.
The problem was boars have a very thick skin and there were only a couple of spots that her daggers could pierce his hide. She could aim either right at the base of his neck or at one of his eyes. Both of those are very difficult shots, and if they did not kill the beast he would most likely get up and start moving around, making any future shots near impossible. She decided that it was worth the risk so she aimed and threw both her daggers the first at the boar’s neck, and another at his right eye. Sadly the beast chose that moment to get up, so that her first dagger hit him in the shoulder the second one missing altogether. He then proceeded to roll around on the ground presumably trying to get the blade out of his shoulder, unsurprisingly, the blade snapped with a loud crack. The boar continued to charge around slashing things with his tusks. It wouldn't be long before he cut the rope holding him, she had to act quickly.

She had two options, she could either throw more daggers damaging the hide even more, or she could drop down from her perch and attack the beast with her sabers. Neither were really good options. If only she hadn’t left her crossbow back in town, but then again a crossbow bolt would never pierce his thick hide. She could always wait until the beast got free and left, but she really needed the money that his pelt would provide and extra food was always good. That meant the only valid option was to jump down and attack the beast on foot.

Then she climbed down a couple branches so that she was about three feet off the ground afterwards she drew her sabers and dropped down to the ground. She tightened her grip, and slowly advanced a couple of steps. The boar had calmed down and was currently laying a few feet away, perpendicular to her with his head turned away. She tried to remember what she had been taught about wild boar. They attack by lowering their head, charging and then slashing upward with their tusks, they are fast when they reach their top speed, but slow to stop, or change direction, and they have very sensitive ears and noses, making them difficult to sneak up on.

It seemed that she only had one option, so she rushed the beast sprawling herself on top of him so that his tusks could not reach her. And stabbed her sabers into his neck almost completely detaching his head from his body. The beast continued to twitch even though she knew he was dead.

She stood and started to clean the boar. She'd probably make the pelt into a coat with winter on the way. The meat would most likely get smoked so that it would last longer. The bones could be smoothed and engraved, and then sold at the market. The head, she would most likely preserve and then mount it, with a boar this size, she could sell it for around two hundred emeralds* to one of the warlords or maybe even the overlord himself, though she thought that last option was unlikely considering no one has seen the overlord in many years.

After she had finished skinning the boar, she cleaned her sabers and went to go look for her other dagger. The first one she had been lodged in the boar’s right shoulder, but the hilt had snapped off. She had searched for a few minutes before she remembered hearing a splash after she threw her daggers. The second one must have landed in the river. She cursed her luck now she would have to travel to Decorus Castelli** to get her daggers replaced. That was another problem that could have been avoided if she had been more careful.

Aurey sighed again, mixed the soot with a little water and began rubbing it through her bright auburn hair, making it look black so that she would be less noticeable. Not that it would make her unnoticeable, no matter how hard she tried, her angular features, long and bright auburn hair, clear green eyes, and fair skin made her stand out like an open flame in a desert night. When compared to the average Minecraftian who usually had more rounded features, black or brown hair, and brown eyes, and olive skin.

When she was done she crouched and began to scan around the clearing to make sure no one was watching. It was unlikely that anyone would be there because the only way to get to the hot springs was to either, hike the twenty-three miles from town, cross two rivers and climb up a seventeen foot waterfall, or sail up to the side of the mountain and scale the seventy-six foot cliffs that bordered the ocean, unlikely but possible, definitely possible.

She was almost satisfied that no one was there and was ready to begin the long trek back to town but when she saw him lurking in the shadows at the edge of the clearing. Without pausing she continued to scan the edge of the clearing as if she had not seen him, all the while reaching down and grabbing one her daggers. And then, without warning, she spun around, stood and threw her dagger, aiming for his shoulder. Immediately after she felt the dagger leave her hand, she drew her sabers and rushed forward. As usual, things started to go wrong. As she rushed forward she was alarmed to see he had leaned out of the way of her dagger, and drawn his own sword all within a fraction of a second.

When she stopped her advance, they met and exchanged a few hits, in which she had managed to land only a single blow on the right side of his face, leaving a shallow cut, stretching from the corner of his mouth to his ear. He had also landed a blow on her left shoulder. Luckily, she had been wearing a leather jacket over a thick woolen cloak and tunic, otherwise, the cut would have been very deep. Soon after they reached an impasse. She had her sabers crossed in front of his neck so that if he made the slightest movement she could easily cut his throat, and she could feel the tip of his sword pressing into the base of her neck.

She was surprised very few in Minecraft could match her in skill with the sword, although some of her success had to do with the fact that she was just over six feet tall with slim and muscular limbs, as opposed to the average Minecraftian swordsman who is more solidly built and usually measures in at a mere 5'3”. And yet here he was several inches taller than her with long and equally muscular limbs, black hair, and startlingly bright intelligent blue eyes, matching her every move with what appeared to be ease. He was by all means, a master swordsman with a grace and skill of movement that only came with years of practice, a swordsman of equal or possibly even greater skill than her.

Then their eyes connected, and for what seemed like the longest time, they just stood there. Then suddenly, he spoke, his voice was deep and smooth, a voice that was used to being the center of attention

"Hello Aureylian, my name is Vechs, it's nice to meet you. Now we should really get out of here." Vechs said, in a tone that one would use when speaking to a small child not someone that could cut your head off at any moment.
