This is a song fic based off the song "Gone, gone, gone" by Phillip phillips (If you can't tell by the title) Thank you to my amazing beta r7 and I hope you enjoy reading.

When life leaves you high and dry
I'll be at your door tonight

Nebris walked with nervous dread towards Etho's base. In his arms he carried a woven basket filled with gifts. He would be less scared of attacking the ninja because at least then he knew the outcome; certain death. But he didn't know how Etho would react to this and that uncertainty made his hands shake as he knocked on the door. He heard the knob turn and Nebris held his breath as awaited the look on Etho's face. The door creaked open and he saw Etho, sword in hand, his posture as menacing as always but his eyes looked tired and his hair was ever slightly more disheveled than usual.

He looked surprised and he raised a questioning eyebrow when he spoke, "Nebris?"

If you need help, if you need help.

"I heard you were sick so I, uh, brought you some soup," Nebris looked away and held the basket out to him. Why had he decided to do this again? This was just another one of his stupid ideas. He should have just stayed home, send him a card, and avoided the embarrassment. Etho was silent, so Nebris risked a glance, expecting mocking laughter, instead Etho smiled at him, making his heart flutter nervously. Etho took the basket with one hand and set it one a side table and Nebris felt himself drawn into a hug.

Etho's breath tickled his ear when he spoke, "You're so cute when you're nervous." Nebris blushed and wrapped his arms around Etho.

I'll shut down the city lights,
I'll lie, cheat, I'll beg and bribe

Etho invited him inside and they ate the soup- which wasn't that bad- and Etho pulled out a board game for them to play. Etho laughed nervously when he told Nebris the title.

"It's called Sorry, I know typical canadi-" Etho began, before Nebris cut him off.

"I'd love to play." So they played and talked long into the night about everything and nothing in particular. Nebris could hear the sleepiness in Etho's voice and he yawned every few minutes.

"Etho, go to sleep."

"No, I'm fine, we have to-" He yawned breaking, off mid-sentence, "-finish the game, I'm going to win." Nebris sighed at the stubbornness, this was only the fifth time he asked.

"You're tired and you need to sleep to get better."

"One more game." Etho pleaded with puppy dog eyes, "please?"

"Fine, but if I win you need to promise to go to sleep. Deal?" Etho nodded his affirmation.

Nebris didn't bother to hide his cheating very well, moving his piece an extra few spots and nudging the dice for a better number. Etho didn't call him out for it, just sent him a disapproving glare and continued playing.

Nebris won eventually and far sooner than he would have if he had played fair, "Bed time." He looked at Etho expectantly.

To make you well, to make you well.

"Fine." Etho stood up with his head hung and took a step towards his bedroom only to fall in a swirl of dizziness. Nebris jumped up from his chair to catch him, but instead of setting him back down he scooped the tall man into his arms and carried him, knowing that there was no other way Etho would ever make it to his bed. Etho mumbled something then wrapped his arms around Nebris' neck. Nebris sighed and walked him into the bedroom. He set him down gently on the bed and stepped away only to find that Etho wouldn't let go of his neck and even half asleep he was stubborn. Eventually, he pried himself free and walked into the main room.

When enemies are at your door
I'll carry you away from war

Nebris could hear the moaning of zombies and the rattle of skeletons approaching the house and he could see them through the window even with the lack of torches in Etho's yard. He glanced at ninja sleeping peacefully and sighed to himself. Drawing his sword, he opened the door and stepped outside, closing it softly behind him. Moments later the horde was upon him. He sliced the head off of a zombie, stabbed a skeleton through the ribcage, slew another zombie and continued as more took their places. At the rate they were spawning the hope for finding a quadruple spawner crosser his mind, but he pushed the thought away to continue fighting. He couldn't see an end to monsters, and the moon was only just starting to set, but he had not taken too many hits so he was content fight through the night as long as he didn't pass out from exhaustion first.

Behind him the door opened and closed, he didn't dare look away from the battle, but he knew who it was moments later as arrows rained down on the enemies in front of him.

"Etho, you are-" Breath. "-supposed to-" Breath. "-be sleeping!" Nebris hadn't realized how out of breath he had become until he spoke.

"And you're not?" Nebris heard Etho draw his sword and step up beside him to fight. Although he didn't want to show it he was secretly glad to have his friend beside him. Their fighting styles complimented each other, Nebris attacking with brute force while Etho danced around him. Nebris focused on the enemies in front of him, trusting his defense to Etho.

An some point later Nebris bumped into Etho. Etho's back was turned and multiple skeletons had arrows trained on him. Nebris swept Etho into his arms and moved him out of harm's way, setting him back down in a small clearing, free of mobs.

If you need help, if you need help.

Nebris gave Etho a small smile then returned to mobs in front of him.

"34," Nebris said beheading another zombie.

"Cheater, you were out here first" Etho said before he vaulted over a skeleton knocking it to pieces on the way down, "27."

"You seem to be catching up just fine to me." Nebris plowed his way through another group of mobs, "38"

"Well, I don't intend to lose." Nebris watched as enemies fell to ground in front of him, arrows protruding from their backs, Etho smiled down at him from a tree, "36" Nebris scowled and lunged at the mobs, no way was he going to lose. He killed two more skeletons before they could shoot and knocked a creeper away. As he sprinted to kill it, it fell over dead.

"Kill stealer," he hissed.

"40" Etho smirked down at him from the tree. Nebris scowled. Etho jumped from the tree and landed beside him. He bowed with a cheesy smile plastered to his face then drew his sword to continue fighting. Nebris laughed, then joined him.

Your hope dangling by a string
I'll share in your suffering

As the night wore on, the number of mobs seemed to increase rather than thin and counting them took more energy than Nebris cared to waste. At times Nebris couldn't see more than a few feet in any direction.

At a lull in the battle he looked out across the battle field that Etho's yard had become. He saw Etho cornered by mobs against the side of his house. Nebris finished off the mobs in front of him then ran over to where Etho was facing mobs ten to one. Etho's smile of relief when he came in to view was enough to make the arrows peppered in his side worth it.

They fought, backs pressed together, until Nebris could see the sun peeking over the horizon.

To make you well, to make you well.

When the mobs started to burn of their own accord, they leaned against each other to catch their breath. He turned to look at Etho, whose breath came in heavy pants that matched his own, and saw that Etho was looking back him, a tired smile on his face.

Give me reasons to believe
That you would do the same for me.

A certain three words were on the tip of his tongue, so Nebris clamped his teeth shut. For a while he had thought that they were in love, he knew he was, but then it had slowly dawned on him that Etho didn't feel the same. He forced himself to be content with their crazy friendship that fluctuated so easily between death matches and board games.

And I would do it for you, for you.
Baby, I'm not moving on
I'll love you long after you're gone.

"I told Seth and Doc that I would help them with a redstone thing, catch up with you later." And just like that, Etho was gone.

No hug goodbye, though he shouldn't expect one. Watching Etho walk away, he felt the angry surge of possessiveness that came with thinking of Etho with anyone else, but Etho wasn't his. Nebris turned and walked, numbly, back to his base.

For you, for you.
You will never sleep alone.
I'll love you long after you're gone
And long after you're gone, gone, gone.

He wished that he meant more to Etho, if only he knew how much he meant to Nebris. He sighed and forced those thought from his mind, he had better things to focus on, like the base he was suppose to be building.

When you fall like a statue
I'm gon' be there to catch you

Walking through spawn towards his home, his feet dragged at the path tossing up dust behind him. He was drawn towards the death games building. Partially for justice, but mostly just hoping for a reason to see Etho again. He could never tell if the purple was to mock him or thank him. Knowing Etho, it was mockery and while that bothered him, it matched his eyes so he couldn't hate that much.He opened the chest and peered inside, looking intently at the names etched into the swords.

The names were Guude and BTC.

He let the lid fall, heavily, back down. The thought of finding Etho's sword and putting it in the chest crossed his mind, it would be fitting for someone with his reputation. He decided against it knowing that some how, Etho would find out.

He sighed at the lost chance and exited, heading towards the nether portal and his home. From across town he could hear the sound of laughter and playful teasing. He closed his eyes trying to shut it out, taking a deep breath. It only made it worse. He could nearly see the smile on Etho's face as he laughed again, this time at one of Doc's jokes.

Nebris risked a glance. Etho was perched high up on scaffolding, building something out of stone brick.

Nebris watched with horror as a creeper snuck up behind Etho. The explosion knocked him from his perch on his build, flinging him to the ground-far enough that even feather falling couldn't save him. Nebris ran. Caution to the wind, all that mattered was Etho hurtling towards death.

It was all too apparent that Nebris could never run fast enough to catch him. Fear wracked his nerves, but nothing worse than what Etho must be feeling. Adrenaline slowed the moments, drawing out his fear, so he did the only thing he could.

He quickly reached in to his pocket, retrieving and throwing two enderpearls, one at Etho and the other off into the distance. When he collided with Etho he wrapped his arms around, holding him tightly. The grass rushed upwards to meet them and Nebris could only hoped the pearl would hit before they did. He closed his eyes and braced himself, rotating so he would land first.

The wind snapped out of his lungs when they hit. His body ached from the enderpearls but that was it. Bless his luck.

"You are perhaps the clumsiest ninja ever." Nebris said with a groan as Etho rolled off of him.

"Only when you're around."

Put you on your feet, you on your feet.

Etho stood and held out a hand to Nebris, who took it and the help it offered in standing.

And if your well is empty
Not a thing will prevent me.

"Thanks"

"No problem," Nebris could never let him die, no matter the cost to himself.

Tell me what you need, what do you need?

Nebris pulled a stack of enderpearls out of his pocket and held them out. Etho took them and Nebris could feel the blood rush to his cheeks when they touched. He turned away and started to walk. He needed to get away fast before he remembered how nice it was to hold Etho as they fell. He started sprinting when he felt the first tear roll down his cheek.

In the part of his brain that wasn't focused on the thought of Etho going back to Doc and Seth, he registered the sudden rush of air and crack of an enderpearl. He ran past it. He felt a hand grab his arm and try to pull him back, but even in this state he was stronger.

There was another crack and this time firm hands grabbed him by the shoulders, holding him in place. He fought anyway, hands raised to push away.

"Nebris."

I surrender honestly.

He stopped, no fight left. Etho's hand came up to his cheek and tilted his face up. He flinched away, but Etho's hand stayed and his thumb came up to wipe the trail of tears that ran down his cheek. Nebris' hands shook at his sides and he turned his face away, pulling back as far as he could without moving.

He snuck a peek at Etho's face and saw his eyes, filled with quiet concern, as he pulled Nebris into arms, holding him against his chest. Nebris stood shivered at the touch, every fiber of his being telling him to relax but he stood stock still, arms at his sides. It was ingrained deep in his brain that Etho didn't care for him and no hug was going to change that.

"Go away." When he spoke his voice was thick from crying. Any hope for their friendship shattered. Etho would never want anything to do with him after this. Etho recoiled at the words.

"No." His voice was quietly firm. Nebris pulled out of hug to look Etho in the eye. "You would never have left me while I was crying, you would hold me and cradle me and tell me that everything was going to be alright."

Etho's arms were around him again and this time, Nebris fell into the hug, letting Etho sit and pull him into his lap. Nebris cried against his chest, for once crying away all his insecurities and fears, for once feeling perfectly safe.

"I love you." Etho's words were muffled by Nebris' hair, but even so Nebris smiled.

You've always done the same for me.
