Regret is a Powerful Thing: Chapter #1
Thursday, July 10th, 2014 10:56 pmThis is my first Mindcrack fan fiction (and first fan fiction ever)! Hopefully I did okay?
I'm always open to people's opinions, might help me improve? Maybe? :3
P.S. In case some people are confused, "sharingan" is the name for the red eye portrayed in Etho's skin.
Anyways, here we go!:D
Etho’s POV
It was late, long after the lights in the spawn buildings had gone out. The usual bustle of the Mindcrack server was replaced with nothing more than the sound of clinking bones and moaning zombies. Etho sat in the basement of EthoCorp. His fingers dug into the sides of his chair, which caused his knuckles to turn white. His foot tapped against the cold quartz floor in an uneasy fashion. He was completely consumed with guilt and regret for what had happened only one week ago.
Etho had been awake for almost three days straight, his dreams had become nightmares and they tortured him for the awful sin he committed. Etho pulled down his mask and put his hands over his face. His usual calm and collected attitude had dissolved to reveal him as a nervous wreck. He stood up and walked into the restroom, and turned the faucet on. As the cold water ran, he looked in the mirror.
The person staring back at him was a complete stranger he had never seen before. His hands were shaky and unsteady, and he shifted his weight from foot to foot. His sharingan was spinning rapidly and beads of sweat gathered on his forehead. He had a stubborn, splitting headache that would not go away no matter how many remedies he tried.
His best friends Pause and Beef were dead all because of him. He had taken his experimental potion recipes too far, and he shouldn’t have gotten his friends involved. He messed up the formula, and it costed them their lives. When they found out, some of the Mindcrackers resented him, while others grew to fear him. Even Nebris was ignoring him, which hurt the most of all. He told himself that it was an honest mistake, that he didn’t mean for it to happen. Right? He honestly didn’t know if that was the correct answer or not.
The longer Etho stood there, the more he grew disgusted with himself. The guilt was eating him from the inside out. Over the past few days, his judgement was clouded and he couldn’t think straight; it drove him crazy. He wished Pause and Beef were alive so he could beg for their forgiveness. He wanted the Mindcrackers to understand, but they couldn’t. Was there even anything left to live for? His best friends were dead, and the ones he DID have left wanted nothing to do with him. Maybe the Mindcrackers were right, he was an outcast: no more dreams, no more hope, no more friends. Everything he knew was gone.
Nebris’s POV
Nebris felt like crap. The moon hung low on the horizon as he walked through the shadows. He had been up for a while now, and he had finally made up his mind to go visit Etho. He felt bad for ignoring him, and regretted not being there for him when his two best friends had just died. He stuffed his hands in his pockets and trudged through spawn. Nebris closed his eyes and sighed, he and Etho were good friends. So why did he feel like what he was doing was a chore? When Nebris heard what Etho had done, he stood there silently and pretended like he didn’t care. That wasn’t true, however. Nebris did care, he cared more than anyone else did.
None of the lights in EthoCorp were on, and the whole place reeked of loneliness. The leaves on the oak trees rustled in the wind. Nebris knocked on the door. No response. His second attempt was slightly louder, but still did not prevail.
“Etho?” Nebris asked, putting his ear to the door. “It’s Nebris… I know you’re home.”
After a while of waiting and still no response, Nebris walked inside. The door was unlocked, which was odd considering what time it was. He glanced around looking for any signs of Etho. He held his breath and listened, only to be greeted by the thick and uncomfortable silence in the air. He turned to leave when he heard a clatter come from downstairs. He stuck the record “Cat” in the jukebox and climbed down the hidden ladder leading to the basement.
“Etho? Oh my God! What the hell are you doing?!” Nebris’s voice almost failed when he saw him.
