Time – 3:49 AM, 17th of June

“Kurt?”

Zisteau yelled out loud as a figure dressed in a light brown trench coat walked in from an air lock at the side of this giant glass dome.

“Yeah! It’s me! How the hell did you get here? Actually never mind, from the looks of things, properly Vechs did this.”

Kurt gave a slight chuckle as he walk up to Zisteau and gave him a tight hug. Then step back and closely examinants his long lost friend.

“It’s been freaking ages since last time I saw you and you still haven’t changed a bit. Let’s go to my office, I just brewed some coffee before you showed up!”

Zisteau hesitated for a bit before he spoke, showing a bit of concern on his face.

“Oh...eh, I am here to deliver the supplies that Vechs have been sending here. I think I better get that done first.”

Kurt stops in his track to the airlock and look at Zisteau with much curiosity and alarm.

“Really? Isn't the delivery on 25th? And why can’t Vechs come? Is he ok? What happened?!”

Zisteau waved off Kurt’s worry, “Oh it’s nothing, just a broken ankle. He will be fine soon enough. So eh, how do I get the stuff through that magical book of yours?”

-Sworf-

The cool night breeze and silver moonlight engulfed the two figures that appeared out of thin air. Night creatures were startled by the appearance of these two but then quickly moved on with their short and miserable life.

“I haven't been back at earth for nearly 400 years. And it is still the like mess when I left…”

Kurt mumbled to himself but loud enough that Zisteau can hear too. He gave a bitter face and replied to Kurt’s words.

“Yeah, just a big pile of mess.”

They stood there, looking over the plains not far from where they are. Examine the damage. Creators from explosions and rubble of buildings litter the land, creating an ugly, artificial swamp of destruction. Spots of earth which have no sign of life with in, large and small, indicates radioactive material’s presents. Occasional rustle in the brownish gray grass caused by the equally radiated and starving small mammal. The place is dead, or at least, dying, soon enough it will be a lifeless wasteland.

“Enough of that, let’s get the supplies to your base.”

Zisteau broke the silence of sorrow and regret, suggest that they better move before the monsters decide it would be great to throw Kurt a welcoming party.

“Right right…” Kurt let out a long sigh, breaks the eye contact with the field and walk toward the small hut that contained the book, “Derpy Vechs is always derping, here, use this.”

He tossed a small remote to Zisteau, who catches it with a swift movement. Then closely examine the object. It was a rectangle about half the size of his palm. Cased in completely stainless steel and polished to a shine. Two small buttons is embedded into the surface and with the label “Open” and “Close”. He pressed the open button and immediately the ground start to shook and the soil starts to move. Zisteau jump back two steps to clear the crack that appeared under his feet while Kurt stood in front of the hut and smile at the sight of two giant piece of earth with machines under it, size of two semi trucks, moves up 3 meters and then slide apart, revealing a large blue, cloudy crystal ring laying on its side at the bottom of this pit and a very narrow, rusty walkway down to the structure.

“Holy...what?! Since when did this happen?! When did he find the time to install all this stuff?!”

Kurt chucked at Zisteau’s surprise, then walks into the small hut and grabbed the book.

“Fun is not over yet, you might want to stand back for this one.”

Kurt walked hastily down the walkway, kneeled down beside what seems like a gaping hole in the crystal, and inserted the book into it. What happens next defies anything Zisteau known and believes. Wind start to pick up, swirling around the center of the ring, picking up small dirt particles and grass blades. Then the black smoke that engulfed him when he used the book starts to appear and mixed into the miniature tornado, turning it to pitch black. Slowly, spots of blue start to grow on the black funnel and soon enough turned it entirely into a light blue color. Small lighting starts to shoot from this blue swirling wind and strike the crystal structure. The crystal absorbed the energy and starts to glow. With a final lighting strike and a low rumbling, the wind vanished and left a thin, smooth, cyan colored membrane that fills the ring.

“And a tada!” kurt bowl down like a magician who just showed his audience his final and most impressive trick, “Now lower the goods into the portal, we should be done before sunrise.”

- Vechs’ Underground bunker -

Time - 6:00 AM, 17th of June

The sharp, jarring sound of the alarm clock broke the silence within the bedroom. The thin bed sheets shows two vague figure, tangled together, enjoying each other’s warmth. One of the figures slowly rose up and smacked down at the alarm clock and murmured God damn it. then quietly yawned under her breath. Slowly rubbing the fog out of her bright green eyes, Aury turned to look at her partner, still snoring away in the dream land. She got out of bed and head straight for the bathroom to clean up her looks. Brushed the teeth, washed off the sleepiness with a cold water shower then dried and combed her hair in to a long ponytail.

“Wakey wakey!“

She stepped out of the bathroom and climbed in to bed again, only to play with Vechs’ ears and nose.

“Stop…just a few more minutes…”

Aury pouts and forced his eyes to open.

“We have literally been through this a several ten thousand times, now get up! There is work to be done!”

With much yelling and effort, Vechs finally rolled off the bed and crawl his way toward the bathroom. A quick cold water shower and a round of teeth brushing, he is awake and ready to take on the day. When he walked out, Aury just finished ironing his overall.

“Here, I patched up the holes from yesterday. Not the best of a job, but it should hold.”

With a quick kiss on the cheeks, she handed the cloth to him,

“Get dressed already and let’s go to the Cafe, I am starving!”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Cafeteria is quiet and cold, sections of its white marble walls is stained with droplets of grease and dust. The stone slab floor is mopped daily and still wet from yesterday’s cleaning. Several well polished plastic bench and long steel picnic table scattered throughout the large open area with few a stone brick pillars and arches to support the weight of the earth above. A dozen or so fans attached to the ceiling spin sluggishly to create a small current of cold air that circulate this hall. Bright Fluorescent light aligns in a grid pattern on the ceiling and along the foot of the wall, efficiently lit up everything. A small window and door that connected to a kitchen is placed at the very back of the room.

“Huh, that’s odd, where is Zisteau and his master chef skills?”

Aury said that with a bitter look, almost disappointed. He was never late for anything, especially prepare food and cook them for a meal. With a shrug, Vechs headed toward the kitchen and slide over the window frame that doubles as a counter. Swiftly, he opened the fridge door.

“Hmm, not much in here, some cold cooked chicken I brought back yesterday, eggs, a little bit of milk and yogurt, some bread slices and apples….that’s about it.”

“At least it’s enough for a sandwich and an apple smoothie, you make toast while I prep…”

Sound of footsteps and chattering from the distance hallway stopped Aury’s thoughts.

“Who is that?”

“Could be Zisteau, but then again, who is he talking to?”

“Can it be Paul?”

“No, I know the old man; he won't come back until his bags are full of ores.”

“Why didn't the security sound the alarm?”

“…I don’t know…”

The talking stopped now, leaving the footsteps slowly making its way to the cafeteria. Aury and Vechs looked at each other, staring with much concern. Vechs nods and she nod back and took out her hand gun. Both stayed low and maneuvered around the café and seek for cover. He stood behind one of the stone pillar while she overturned a table and duck behind. The Footsteps are getting dangerously close now, within a few seconds, it will reach the door of this place.
