Chapter 2! Thank you Lioness, for the name. I chose Omens because... It sounds better. I think.
It came slowly at first, but came with increasing amounts of frequency. A wind, blowing across the land, freezing all that felt it, growing colder each time. The last time it had blown, it had frozen the river at Spawn over completely.
The wind was a problem, but that wasn’t the main problem. Every night, one of the Mindcrackers, only one a night, saw a figure in the sky at night. They always saw the figure from the flash of lightning. The order seemed to be completely random, starting with Nebris, then going from Guude to Bdubs, to Zisteau, to Avidya, to Etho. Etho had been the last to see it. This night, they had decided that they would all stay together, to see if they could see the figure in the sky all together.
Kurt awoke, Wolfie licking his hand. Kurt put his hand on Wolfie’s head.
“What is it, boy?” Kurt asked of the dog, who was obviously excited about something. Suddenly, the dog ran outside, with Kurt quickly pursuing. In his haste, however, he managed to step on Vechs’ hand, and Vechs woke up. Vechs groaned, raised himself on one hand, saw Kurt running after Wolfie, and decided to investigate.
Wolfie came to a stop just out the door, sitting with his tongue lolling out. The dog was obviously excited about something outside. Kurt came to a stop next to Wolfie, as lightning flashed across the sky. Kurt instantly looked up, and noticed a shape in the air. Vechs came to a stop beside the man in 3-D glasses.
“Kurt, what are you looking at?” Vechs asked. Kurt just pointed at the shape. Vechs looked up, and Kurt saw, out of the corner of his eye, Vechs’ mouth become a perfect ‘O’ shape. Then the figure in the sky was lit up by another lightning strike, showing the creature. The creature was lit for only a moment, but that was long enough. They caught flashes of the creature. Dark, obsidian-like skin. Eyes of bright violet, the same shade as Nebris’s. Suddenly, it was gone. Like a lightning flash itself. The two stared at each other for a long moment, and then headed back inside. Another cold wind blew across the land…
Everyone stared at Vechs and Kurt. They had just shared their story of what they had seen. There was only one possible idea of what the figure was. But no-one wished to accept it. Etho and Doc exchanged glances of fear. Suddenly, Genny voiced what everyone was thinking.
“Didn’t we kill that sucker off, ages ago?” He asked in confusion. The others looked between themselves. Suddenly, a voice sounded behind everyone else.
“Yeah, we did.” Everyone turned, to see Mhykol, unseen until now. Mhykol sighed, and muttered under his breath, something about blindness. A wave of laughs spread through them all, until they remembered.
