When I was a child, I was terrified of the dark. I still am, but when I was around 6 or 7 I couldn't go a night without crying out for my parents to search underneath my bed or my closet. Even though I had a nightlight, I would see dark figures moving around in the corners of my room. I had to cover my windows, so I wouldn't see the monsters looking through my bedroom window. My parents would twll me “It's only a bad dream.” or “It's just a trick in the night.” But my mind made it possible that the second I fall asleep, the zombies and other bad things would come and get me. Most of the time I would hide under my covers until I was too tired to care, although sometimes I would become so panicked that I would run into my parent's or Zisteau's room, waking them up. After an ordeal like that, no one would be getting a full night of sleep. After a very traumatizing night, my brother, Zisteau, had enough.
It was more like Zisteau's idea than my parent's to stitch me up a little bed time friend.
He collected some brown cloth and grabbed our mom's sewing machine and created what I called Fwap a Derp, or Fwap for short. Fwap a Derp was a stuffed bat. He was made to keep me safe at night by scaring off all the monsters away. He was more adorable and cuddly than creepy. I'm surprised he scared off all those monsters. Looking back on it now, I'm impressed Zisteau came up with such an adorable, yet slightly creepy, stuffed animal. Fwap a Derp was a stitched up to be a bat, he had two black eyes and tiny, pointed ears that rested on top of his head. His wings were neatly sewed together. His mouth had two stitched fangs, both white and had been stitched separately. It was like love at first sight.
Til this day, Fwap never left my side. As long as it was after dusk, of course. He never really liked the sun, he would get upset with me if I tried bringing him to school with me. It was okay, I only needed him at night to keep away the zombies, he was good at that. Every night before I shut my light off to go to bed, he would tell me where the monsters were hiding, and I'd place him near the spookiness. But sometimes the monsters weren't even in my room. Sometimes, they would hide in my nightmares. It was fun bringing Fwap with me into my dreams, he and I would spend many hours fighting wither skellies and ghasts. The best part was that, in my dreams, he would be able to talk to me.
“How much do you love me, Vetches?”
“More than anything.” I would always say to him. One night in a dream, after I lost my first baby tooth, Fwap asked for a favor.
“Can I have your baby tooth?”
“Why?” I asked curiously.
“To help me kill off the bad things.”
The next morning, my parents questioned me about where my tooth went. I told them about Fwap a Derp but they shrugged and went back to their normal morning routine. From then on, every time I lost a tooth, I would give it to him. He always thanked me and told me he loved me. Eventually, I ran out of baby teeth, and I was beginning to get too old to play with stuffed animals. So Fwap sat on my desk collecting dust.
Over time the nightmares became worse. They were so bad that they began following me into the real world, terrorizing every dark corner of a room I was in or rustle every bush I walk past. One night, I got home to find something waiting for me in my room. Fwap was there, on my bed, standing upright with his wings curled around him, with the soft glow of the moon hitting him. At first I thought it was my mind playing tricks on me, so I tried turning on the lights. Another flick of the switch. Then another, and another, but no change to the darkness that surrounds me. I was becoming nervous.
I started to back away slowly towards the door, making sure my eyes never left Fwap's silhouette, I reached my hand behind me to reach for the doorknob. I was about to burst out the door when I heard the door slam shut. In shadows and silence, I was frozen where I stood by the door, I held my breath for what felt like hours, a familiar voice spoke.
“You stopped feeding me Vechs, why should I protect you?”
“Protect me from what?”
“Here, let me show you.”
I blinked once, and there was a portal in front of me. I was told never to go to the nether, but something was forcing me to go in. Once in, I took a look around, there were lava falls falling from the ceiling and the sounds of ghast shrieks were everywhere.
“This is what your reality would be without me.”
A quick silence, then rattling of bones.
“I'm the only one who can stop this.”
When I woke up, I raided Zisteau's and my parent's closet to find any baby teeth, then successfully finding some, I gave them to Fwap. Instantly, well almost, the nightmares stopped. Every once in a while, when I go to my friends house, I would collect their teeth to cease these terrifying nightmares. I'm 26 years old now, with a job that I enjoy, and an apartment. When I got home to my apartment one night, Fwap was waiting for me, hanging upside down on one of my hanging lights.
“Vechs, how much do you love me?”
“More than anything,” I replied. “More than anything in the world.”
