Hacking Mindcrack. So ya, it's a thing. Please excuse the terrible not fun or exciting Part 1 of this story. This is a purely back round part and I don't expect the other to be like this, most likely. Maybe. Does anyone know where this story is going? 'Cause I certainly don't. Here it is, since Aleks inists it doesn't suck, The Beginning:
“So we need to figure out how to get on the server without any of the Mindcrackers
finding out.”
“I still think you’re crazy, Red.”
“Oh, shush, Luvz!”
“Yes, shush, Luvz, this is a great idea!”
“Don’t you start with me, Teo!”
“Guyyyssss! Stop fighting! We need to make this not sound completely crazy before we
tell the others. I need your help.”
“I’ll agree to stop fighting if Luvz does.”
“Fine, fine, fine. Let’s get back to work.”
~~~~
Salad had been doing DvZ and was in between games when RedYellow thought that it would be the perfect time to present her idea. Just about everyone they wanted involved was in the call. Tsu, Sis, Aleks, Fae, Fleather, Sunset, Jack, Voo, Squid, Mew, Nan, Hawser, Purple, Luvz and Teo of course. They were all there. That still left out a few who were vital parts in the plan,but hopefully it would be enough for now.
There was a bunch of different conversations going on all at once, and Red needed to find a way to get everyone’s attention. “Hey, Guys!” she tried to no avail. “Guyysss! GUYS!”
“What is it, Red?” Sunset asked. “Do you want to start another game?”
“No, not yet. I actually wanted to share an idea of mine.” She heard a few groans at the mention of an “idea.” Red had lots of ideas, most of which were pretty boring or ended up turning into nothing. “I promise this idea is a good one! I’ve already run this one by Luvz and Teo. They approve...sort of.”
“Let’s hear it! I’m sure it’s wonderful!” Fae seemed very enthusiastic, to say the least.
“Well, it’s not so much an ‘idea’ as an actual plan…” Red was starting to get a bit nervous
about sharing all of a sudden.
“Oh, come one, Red! Spit it out already!” She couldn’t quite tell who that was with all the static in the background, but it was enough to motivate her to say it.
“I - I’ve figured out how to hack onto the Mindcrack server!” Red blurted it out and waited for a response, trying to be patient. She heard a few snickers, but it was mostly just silence and static.
Surprisingly, Tsu was the first to speak. “How?” was all she said, but it was enough.
“I’ve spent the last week or so looking up how whitelisted servers work and the server host Guude is using for Mindcrack. I’ve figured out a way we could get the ip, get whitelisted, and make it look like no one joined on the log. We wouldn't leave a trace, it’s perfect. We just need some people who know their way around code.” Red tried to explain as calmly as she could, but towards the end her voice got louder and her speech got faster. She was surprised anyone even understood her.
After her announcement, no one spoke. They were definitely not in the mood for any more DvZ matches, so they ended the call to let everything sink in. Within minutes, everyone was split up amongst their teams and smaller chats, discussing and fangirling.
Within the hour, Red was flooded with PMs from people asking questions or offering help with their individual levels of coding skill or another. She went back and forth with everyone for what seemed like forever until she finally had a basic idea on how to organize things.
The only problem was that once Organized Red came out to play, you didn’t want to mess with her. You would either listen to her or face her wrath. She sent messages to everyone letting them know the time and date of the next meeting. She sent messages to some people on Dreamwidth, encouraging them to get Skypes before the set date or risk not being involved. Once the messages were sent, all she could do was wait and hope that all goes as planned.
~~~
It had been two weeks since she first proposed the hacking of Mindcrack and it was now mid-July. She kept reviewing her presentation plan, counting down the minutes until she was supposed to start the call.
The time came and the call began with a few greetings from people as they connected. Others said nothing. Red didn’t speak until everyone had answered. The call fell into silence. “Your mission,” she began, somewhat ominously, “if you choose to accept it. Hack the Mindcrack server and cause some trouble the way only Salad could.” She waited then with a muted mic for her words to sink in. She giggled, trying to imagine what her friends were thinking of all of this. After a minute of silence, she unmuted her mic and suppressed her giggles the best she could. “Umm, sorry about all the formality in this. I just wanted to make sure you were truly dedicated and wouldn't spill the secret. And seeing as I haven’t noticed any reddit posts discussing this, I would say you all succeeded.” That earned a few small chuckles. She continued. “Now let’s see, where should we start? Ah! Yes, let’s start with you team of hackers. That would be Sunset, Aleks, Dark, Squid, and Purple. Any protests? No? Good. I’ll talk to them separately after this call to give them more details. Next order of business -questions. Who has them?”
“I have one,” Squid said quickly.
“Please, do share.”
“How do you think they’re gonna react to seeing us on the server?”
“Hmm?” Red asked, slightly distracted by her lists, which she was checking. “How is who going to react?”
“I think she means, ‘How are you Mindcrackers going to react?” Nan offered.
The suggestion started a whirlwind of conversations. Some contemplated meeting their favorite Mindcrackers. Some discussed convincing their favorite pairing to date, and some even considered dating Mindcracker themselves. “Guys! No, guys, you don’t understand…”
Everyone shut up when they heard me say this. “Wait, this isn’t just another RP you conned
us into joining, is it, Red?” Fleather asked. Where he got the idea, Red didn’t know.
“Wh - ? No! Guys, no. It’s not that, it’s just that the Mindcrackers can’t know we were ever on the server. Can you imagine what would happen if they found out?”
Everyone in the call sighed collectively, understanding. “Oh.”
“Cheer up, maybe one day we can tell them. But for now, it must be a secret.”
“Ya, she’s right,” said Teo, who was actually being serious and sensible for once. “Anyway, that shouldn't be our main concern right now. First we need to leave Red and the hackers alone so they could start talking technical stuff.”
“Yes, good point, Teo. Everyone who is not on the hacking team please hang up now and
wait for further instructions.” Everyone hung up promptly and only Red, Aleks, Purple, Dark,
Sunset, and Squid were left in the call.
~~~
“Oh! Ok… I see what you mean, Aleks, the Java script for the server is definitely not Minecraft standard.”
“You see it too, Purple? I’m not going crazy?”
“Of course not, it is really weird, though.”
“Yes! It took 5 hours but I finally got it! We have the IP!” Dark earned cheers and congratulations from everyone, including Red, who hadn't said much since giving them their tasks.
“So we've got the IP and we've figured out how to disguise ourselves to people on the server, as well as make it look like we never existed in the log. We’re so close! All that’s left is for Sunset to finish the code for getting us whitelisted.”
“Ya, ya, Red! I’m almost done, this is harder than it looks, you know. Definitely with all
this weird code, I’ve never seen anything like it before.” All the other hackers sounded their agreement about how difficult it was and how weird the code looked.
“We have to get this done tonight. I told everyone we’d be ready for another meeting tomorrow. I just don’t want to let them down…”
“Don’t worry about it, Red. We’ll get it done.” Aleks assured her. And they did. Sunset had figured out how to get them whitelisted within the hour and they were ready for the next meeting and the next phase of the plan.
~~~
“Is everyone here? Good, good.” It once again amazed Red how quiet the call was even though there was more than 20 people in it. “Progress report - we, they, finished all the coding. Let’s give the hackers a hand.” A smattering of applause was heard in the call. “And let’s see, what
else… oh, yes! The first group will head on the server today.” The announcement brought a lot of voices begging to be part of the group. “Don’t
bother asking, I’ve already chosen who is going.”
~~~
“You chose who, now?” Mew couldn’t believe who Red had chosen to be in the first group. “You and Aleks are no-brainers. Fleather is…well, he’s Fleather. But Luvz and Teo? You’re just being biased now. They have absolutely no skills that are valuable to this mission.”
Luvz hmmphed and rabbled. Teo thought that Mew was making a good point. “Fine, then, who would you pick?”
Mew took a moment to consider this before responding, “Obviously you and Aleks. Fleather is fine, but then I would go with...Sis and Beca. Yes, I think they would do well.”
Red considered that for a moment before agreeing to the team change. “Okay, team, we go in at noon tomorrow.”
~~~
Red had barely gotten any sleep. She had been up all night talking to Aleks while they tried to figure out what all the weird code meant. They couldn’t decipher it and ended up logging off, but it still haunted Red. She was paranoid it was some sort of failsafe that would activate when they logged onto the server. She knew that idea was ridiculous and pushed it out of her mind the best she could so she could catch a few hours of rest before the big day.
~~~
This was it. They were finally going to log onto the server. We are prepared, Red kept reminding herself. They had their team in place and only the most important people were on the call. There were the obvious ones: Fleather, Red, Aleks, Sis, and Beca. There were also the less obvious, just as important, people in the call. Sunset was there for tech support, Luvz to keep Red from freaking out too much, and then there was Nan. No one quite knew why she was in the call, but she was. No one questioned it because it was Nan. No one said much in the call. Everyone knew what to do and were too anxious to chat.
“You ready?” Sunset asked nervously.
“Yes,” Beca answered. “Let’s do this.”
“Any last words of advice?” Sis sounded insanely excited, but remaining surprisingly calm.
“Remember, you will still be able to be seen by anyone on the server even though it won’t show up on the logs. So be careful. And say hi to Nebs for me, if you see him,” replied Sunset.
“Okay, guys, we’re gonna do this together. When I say ‘three,’ log on,” commanded Red, who was trying to keep her voice from shaking in anticipation and anxiety. “One…two…THREE!”
She pressed the ‘connect’ button and was sucked from her world into the world of Mindcrack. She was physically being sucked from her desk chair and into the server. It wasn't just mentally. She felt the world melt and twist and fade around her. It almost felt like how she imagined going through a Nether portal would feel like.
It seemed both realities were crushing in around her, fighting to take control of her physical and mental being. It felt as if she was being torn apart. When the world finally stopped spinning and her body felt like it was whole again, Red looked around and saw her friends as if they were real people, not just painted rectangles on a screen.
She noticed Sis first. She was putting her long brown hair up into a ponytail, seemingly unfazed. She saw Fleather next and almost burst out laughing because he looked the exact same
way as his skin did. He was a rubber duck in a suit and it was quite funny. Right next to him was Aleks, who had her short black hair tucked into a blue cap. Red noticed, with a smile, that her friend was wearing a red sweater. She couldn't find Beca at first, but with a quick scan of the horizon, she spotted a person with long black hair and a dark green shirt and assumed it was her.
Red called everyone over to where she was standing, which was right in front of the town hall and asked the questions she knew was on everyone’s mind. “What just happened? Are we actually here on the server? I mean, this looks so real, not like a game at all.”
“What are you guys talking about?” An Australian accent asked from someehere deep inside Red’s head.
“Did you guys hear that?” Fleather asked, startled.
“We must still be connected to the call,” Beca stated, like it was fact.
“Seriously, Red, what’s going on?” Luvz asked, losing her patience. Red quickly explained what they all had experienced. Aleks starting giggling, and it was enough to make even Sis snap.
“What’s so funny, Aleks? This is serious.”
Aleks continued to giggle for a minute before explaining. “This is why the server code was so weird.” When no one seemed to get it, she continued. “The reason the code looked so different from standard Minecraft code is obvious, can’t you see it? We weren't looking at Minecraft code. We were looking at code that made it so you got transported into the game. This isn't really even Minecraft anymore. It’s more like real life except you can respawn.” She allowed time for that to sink in.
(PS: I'm sorry if this isn't what you were expecting/hoping for)
“So we need to figure out how to get on the server without any of the Mindcrackers
