"3rd Commander?" Kurt wasn't quite sure about the title this man had said along with his name. By itself, Commander was a title of someone in the Navy and since he had yet to see any bodies water around, he was unsure of what rank it held here.
The man didn't supply any answer to his unsaid questions, just nodding his head. "I'm VintageBeef or just Beef is fine, 2nd Commander." He pointed towards Pause. "General Asshole Pauseunpause." Before the darker skinned man could get a word in of protest, he continued on and pointed at Etho. "And that General I-didn't-know-TNT-could-hurt-me, otherwise known as Etho."
Pause and Etho both gave Beef a glare. "Rude." They muttered in unison.
Kurt sat there for a moment, processing the new information then looked up at Beef. "I'm the 3rd commander of what?"
"The rebellion, or army of the Mindcrackers if you prefer. You're technically the third highest rank of the entire army." Pause informed, jumping into the conversation.
"'Technically'?"
"That was rank before you died." Etho told him, his voice still had the same distrust as before.
Kurt was suddenly frozen. Dead? That couldn't be. He was sitting there, very much alive. It doesn't matter if he didn't have a memory to his name, he still had a heartbeat!
Thoughts flooded his mind giving him a migraine, voices he couldn't connect faces too drowned out every sound, and a pain shot through his chest. It was if his body was trying to correct it's mistake of being alive again. In the mix of voices he heard someone calling his name, crying to him to come back, telling him that they were sorry and they loved him. Every noise/pain stopped when he felt the pain of something digging into his bare left arm. Looking up, he saw it was Beef, who had a worried look in his eye.
"Kurt, are you alright?" The other questioned, and Kurt suddenly realized he was wheezing just like Brian. "You only just got here, don't die on us again."
Kurt nodded, his vision was turning blurry and the pounding in his head wasn't exactly helping his recover.
"Well, at least after that little fit we know why you're here." Etho got up from the coffee table and made his way out of Kurt's limit sight. "You the first respawn in over five years, congrats."
Both Pause and Beef shared a look before nodding to each other. "Contact Guude and tell him we're leaving this base, but don't tell him the reason why. One word about Kurt and somebody may be executed."
Everything that happened next was a blur to Kurt, he remember Beef asking him a question and then the world turned black for him.
~~~
A flashing bright red light pierced through his vision and the sound of a siren filled his ears. He felt his body being pushed around then soon realized it was people rushing past him. A sense of chilling fear rushed through his body, seeming to freeze up his limbs and make his unable to move on his own.
Kurt knew something was terribly wrong. The people around him had distressed looks on their faces and looked at him as if they expected him to make everything better. What was the problem? What was going on? Who were all these people? How could he help them?
Those questions helped him to realize, his whole fear which his body had was one of not knowing. Even in what seemed to be a vision of the past, Kurt didn't know what was going on.
A hand landed on his shoulder, breaking him of the spell of fear and bringing some comfort to him. He turned his head to see Vintagebeef, who was sending him a reassuring smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Just your luck that on your first day as a commander that we have a breach." It was probably meant to be taken as a joke, but Kurt didn't find it very funny.
"Come on, our nervous leader needs us." The other grabbed his hand and lead him down the hallway. Though the 2nd commander's hand on his brought more comfort, an uneasy feeling washed over him.
Just as they reached the door for the presumable leader, the entire dream dissolved into blackness.
~~~
He awoke to the smell of something burnt and found Etho standing over him with a plate in hand. "We're going to be moving out in a day. Eat." With that said, Etho let go of the plate, leaving Kurt to scramble to catch it before it's contents fell onto him.
"Thanks." Kurt mumbled numbly, before realizing the other man had already left the room. The "food", if that's even what you could call it, looked to be a burnt piece of bread and some meat which was too charred to identify what kind it was. He hoped it would taste less charred going down but his hopes were lost.
Once he was done shoveling the burnt meal into his mouth, Kurt decided to take a look around the room. It was much easier to see the contents of the room because of the bright sunlight streaming through the window, which was behind the beat up blue couch.
The coffee table looked just as worn as the couch. What was probably a beautiful finished top at one point, was now scratched up and had many narrow slits in it, looking like someone had stabbed it with a knife multiple times.
Each wall had it's paint peeling off and had very many watermarks in splash patterns that looked too splattered to be rain leaks. The floors weren't much better either. Scratch marks just like the table, nails sticking out, and former holes that were patched up by a different wood than the rest of the floor. Looking up, he saw a lamp inset into the ceiling which had cracks and holes in the glass.
This place was the definition of run down. It didn't look like a military base as it's name suggested. Quite frankly, the city Kurt had been running in before looked better than this dump. If the city was the battleground as Etho hinted at yesterday as it being, then why was this place look like it instead.
He didn't get very much time to think about it as Pause soon walked into the room.
