The wind blew softly, ruffling the edges of my skirt. Quickly, I held it down with my mitten-clad hands. Shivering in the cold, I walked up towards the old cemetery.
It had been a year since my dad passed away. He was a mysterious man, always running away on secret business. He couldn’t even tell my mom where he was off to next. I didn’t see much of him.
The climb became more difficult, and when I finally reached the top, I breathing so heavily it fogged up my glasses. Pushing them back onto my nose and wiping the lenses, I looked up at the cloudy, evening sky, remembering what had happened that day.
It began normal, like it always was in our little town. I got up and headed off to Laiuna for my classes, meeting halfway through my hour long walk with my best friend, Kurt. He gave me his usual bear hug and it made me feel warm on that freezing morning. Chatting all the way, we trudged down the valley to Laiuna High school, dreading the lectures we have to endure. But as Kurt, or Mac as he prefers to go by, always said “At least we have each other.”
That morning was as normal as ever, until that shadow appeared high above us. Squinting, I could barely make out the figure of a boy and he quickly descended the tree he had been perched in. Dropping to the ground he stared at us for a moment, taking a sip from a small flask. He wore unusual clothing, a bandana tied around his face, a green army vest stuck to his shoulders. But his most disturbing feature was his different coloured eyes; one jet black, the other blood red. He gave us one last look over and then sprinted away.
“What was that about?” I inquired of Mac.
“I dunno, Ems, I think I’ve see his face before.” Mac mumbled through the lip of his trench coat.
“You’ve seen his face? You never told me you’ve seen a guy with different coloured eyes before!”
“Indeed. I don’t tell you everything.” He gave a mysterious look and laughed at my worried expression. “Don’t be so fussy, Em. I live my life and you live yours. And plus, that’s one of the only things I haven’t told you. Now hurry up. We’re going to be late!”
