Fanfic - Critters Chapter 1
Sunday, September 22nd, 2013 03:46 amChapter 1. I've written a lot tonight. Oh dear. Brain melting.
MC sat in front of his computer, editing one of the countless videos he needed to get done today. He stretched slightly, feeling the cold air from the AC roll over him. He jerked back with a howl as the AC ruffled the blackout curtains on his window, sending a sliver of sunlight streaming down on him. He growled, teeth extending as he pulled his arm back, watching the burn very slowly heal. He growled again as he accidentally bite his lip, forgetting his fangs were out. With a hiss he stood up, flying out of the room and down the stairs into the dark basement.
Breathing slowly, he sat down in the centre of the basement, trying to collect himself. It was unbecoming to rage against the sun, but it frustrated him to no end. He had to record during the daytime, it was when everyone else was active. And if he wished to do any sort of collaborations, he needed to be awake when they were. He certainly didn't need to sleep, but they sure did. And he wasn't going to tell them to change their sleep schedule to accommodate him, that would be rather rude. And hard to explain without saying “Hey, I'm a vampire, I'd rather not record while the sun is still up, because it might kill me. Ok? Thanks.” Not that they'd believe him he thought with a sigh. Not many other vampires used computers or the internet, thinking of it as uncouth. He had to figure out some way of not getting burned though.
The faint idea of getting an assistant percolated through his brain before being rudely interrupted by rather loud noises upstairs. Frowning, his eyes flickered upwards. With a growl, he flew up the stairs silently, searching for the source of his annoyance.
He pursed his lips, watching Mike tearing apart Alex's bedroom. He let out of the faintest of sighs, rolling his eyes. Mike's eyes snapped up, face falling as he saw MC, although he relaxed ever so slightly. “Uh...hi MC. I can explain...” Mike said nervously, fingers clenching nervously. MC exhaled slowly, turning his head away from Mike. “Keep the noise down, or I'll tell Alex you're searching for your seal skin again,” MC said as he walked down the stairs, ignoring Mike's pleading and begging that he not tell Alex. He wouldn't tell Alex, that would cause even more shouting, and just be a mess. Although...he was tempted to tell Alex for the opportunity to try some of Mike's blood. Might taste unique...
He made his way back down into the basement as he thought once more about how to get an assistant. While he could just put an advertisement out in the papers or online, it would be difficult to explain to mortals that he expected them to live in the same house as a vampire, werewolf, and selkie. Even explaining it to other creatures would be a stretch, as most preferred to live amongst their own kind. He grinned as he remembered hearing news that one of his brethren has summoned a demon to take care of his mansion. Not that he had a mansion, but perhaps a demon would work. Demons didn't have to worry about sunlight or sleeping. The only issue would be if he was strong enough to summon it. Most demons were summoned with human blood, since it was grounded in reality. But the only blood he had possible access to was werewolf and selkie. Hopefully Alex would allow him to take some blood, as long as he wasn't going to drink it. Werewolf blood should be very earthy, right? Of course, they were all close to nature and such. MC nodded to himself, going over a list of things he'd need to order or find.
He blinked as he heard quiet steps coming down into the basement. Turning slightly, he blinked in surprise to find Mike shuffling about uneasily, staring down at the ground. “What do you need, Mike?” MC questioned, concerned. Mike sighed a bit, still looking down at the ground. “What would it cost for your help finding my seal skin?” Mike said quietly, unhappily. MC blinked, surprised. He quickly hide the surprise, voice calm and unemotional. “You'd be trading one master for another,” he said calmly. He should have expected Mike would come to him eventually. “But I'm not going to do that, and you know that. I do not wish to provoke Alex,” MC said. Mike looked up, face etched with unhappiness, blinking back tears. “Please MC?” Mike whispered. MC looked away, uneasy. “I'll talk to Alex about treating you better if you want, but I'm not going to start a war over you. I'm sorry Mike. I really am,” he said slowly. “Ok...” Mike whispered before going pale as they heard the front door open. “You are here to help with a ritual,” MC whispered in Mike's ear as he flew up the stairs.
“Hi Alex! I was hoping you could help me with something!” MC said with a grin. Alex frowned, staring down the basements stairs, frowning at MC. “Why is Mike in the basement?” he asked, confused. “I'm helping MC with a ritual,” Mike said. Alex sighed, shrugging his shoulders before following MC down the stairs. The stairs creaked slightly before the three of them stood in the centre of the room. Alex grinned at Mike who went pale, looking down at the ground. Alex frowned slightly, whispering in Mike's ear. Mike continued to stare at the ground before nodding.
“So, what do you need help with, MC?” Alex said chuckling softly. MC exhaled slowly, air curling around him. “I need help summoning a demon.” Mike's head snapped up while Alex gaped at MC, before exploding into laughter. “You? Summon a demon?” Alex doubled over in laughter, while Mike just stared at him, nearly uncomprehending. MC glared at Alex, fangs extending. “Yes. Yes I do. I wanted some of your blood in order to ground the ritual. Also, you both do live in the house, I thought it would be nice to let you know when I'm meddling with demonic forces. Would you rather I just summon a demon, and you come downstairs one day and see a demon sitting on the couch, just chilling?” MC said huffily. Alex stopped laughing long enough to nod. “It is nice you're telling us, really.” Mike nodded in agreement. “And yeah, you can use some of my blood. Do you even have a needle?” Alex asked, causing MC to shake his head. “I wasn't going to do this now, I'll need to order and make some things first. I'll let you know when I'm ready.” MC said quietly. Alex and Mike nodded before Alex pulled Mike out of the basement. MC watched them go, Mike tense, unhappy, Alex relaxed, amused. He'd have to do something for Mike, but he was pretty sure the only way to make him truly happy would be to find and give him back his seal skin.
With permission for the blood secured, MC set to work gathering the rest of the required ingredients for the summoning. The list was long and varied, and he was quite sure the post office was going to become rather concerned with the amount of feathers and black silk ordered. They'd just have to worry he thought with a laugh, as he finished ordering the last of the items needed.
He had ordered rush shipping, so the items arrived rather promptly the next day. Alex and Mike watched him, amused, as he dragged the boxes downstairs and unpacked them. “Do you really need that many feathers?” Alex said with a laugh. “Yes,” MC said seriously, continuing to unpack items. “That...is that a book bound in human skin?” Mike asked, alarmed. “No, that's pig skin,” MC answered, still not looking up from the boxes. “Wait, I thought vampires were burned by the rosary!” Mike said, confused. “No, why would we be?” MC giggled as he hung the rosary on the nearby wall. Once everything was set up, he stepped back, staring at his handiwork. Alex and MC stared at the scene more in disbelief than anything else.
MC, indicated places for Mike and Alex to stand. Not that they needed to be on opposite sides of the room, but he decided it would be for the best. Stepping over to Alex, he gave him the needle. “I'm sure you can draw your own blood, I don't want you to go all ragey if I miss a vein,” MC said. Alex sighed, before drawing some blood, handing the needle back to MC. MC's eyes dilated as he smelled the blood. Rather more rich smelling then the very cold and tasteless donated human blood he was use to. He steeled himself as walked into the middle of the summoning circle, draining the needle into the cauldron.
Slowly he chanted the incantations, ignoring the snickering from both Mike and Alex. Stepping out of the circle, he finished the incantation. The cauldron shook, filling with dark purple smoke before breaking in two, the smoke filling the room. “Don't move!” MC said as Alex and Mike started coughing. When the smoke cleared, the all stared at the demon that had manifested where the cauldron was. The demon was fairly tall, with a feminine build, skin a mottled purple colour. MC held up a hand, indicating the other two should not talk.
“Greetings and salutations, oh great demon! I summon you here today to” “Oh please talk normally. This isn't the 13th century anymore,” the demon said slowly, bemused. MC frowned, trying to think if this was mentioned in the books. “Hi demon, I want to strike a deal with you about doing my video editing for me while I stay out of the sunlight?” MC said, shrugging. The demon laughed, shrugging. “What do I get from this deal?” They said, amused. “Errr...you get to not live in hell, and have an easy going summoner?” MC said, scratching the back of his neck. “Deal,” the demon said, shaking MC's hand. The summoning circle evaporated in black smoke, the smell of decaying poppies filling the room. “So, what's your name?” MC asked as the demon stretched, striding around the room. They turned their head, seeming to ponder the question. “You can call me Torchbane for now, I guess. Are these your minions or...?” Torchbane asked, inclining his head at Alex and Mike. Alex growled, flexing slightly. “I'm no one's minion,” Alex growled, voice low. “Ok, ok wolfboy, I get it,” Torchbane said, giggling. Alex huffed, before looking over at MC. “We're going now,” he said as he started up the stairs, pulling Mike with him. MC shrugged, looking over at Torchbane. “Well, let me show you your room,” he sighed. “Ooo, my own room?” Torchbane said excitedly. MC blinked before remembering most people didn't give their demons anything, just constant orders. “Yes, you can do whatever you want as long as that's not going to cause wars in your downtime,” MC said hastily. Torchbane nodded, following MC.
