oh my good gravy this ridiculous thing is kind of done.
Monday, October 8th, 2012 09:56 pmDear Yuletide: this is why you should care about Mindcrack. Probably far from perfect, and I apologize if I missed your favorite build/prank/invention/pairing, but for being thrown together I'm almost proud of it. Feel free to comment over there with additions.
Eventually I'm going to do a longer introduction of each of the 12 LPers nominated and why they rock and who they're most compatible with - but most certainly not now. If you'd like to write one for your favorite, feel free to do so in the comments.
Off to catch up on this weekend's stuff - Orange Wool and Doc playing FTL? GODDAMNIT WHY DOES ALL THE AWESOME STUFF HAPPEN WHEN I'M GONE.

Fandom: Mindcrack
Category: Other Media (Youtube videos and Twitch.tv livestreams)
Comments: Okay, let's get the bits of description out of the way: Mindcrack is a group of (currently 23 male) gamers who create Let's Plays, which are (for purposes of this introduction) videos of themselves playing video games on Youtube with commentary. (Many of them also live stream gaming content as well through twitch.tv.) They all play together on a Minecraft server of the same name, and most of their content is indeed in Minecraft though there are exceptions.
If you're curious as to why anyone would ever care to watch other people play video games, here's one Minecraft developer's take on it. The Mindcrackers themselves are also consistently brilliant at what they do in Minecraft - some of the most seriously beautiful builds and ingenious mechanical designs have come from Mindcrackers, and some of them are well known in the PVP/e-sport, charity marathon, and challenge map communities as well. (There are also many, many more examples of all of these things that I'm blanking on at the moment.) But that's not the real reason why this fandom was nominated, though cracking into the minds (ha!) of the guys would be fascinating...
For 23 people across half a dozen different time zones, most of whom have only met through the Internet, their chemistry as friends (and possibly more than friends) is AMAZING. Their admiration for each other is totally genuine, their friendships are sincere and honest, their pranks are friendly and awesome and generally not grief-y at all (a rarity in Minecraft) and they'll defend each other through thick and thin. They're all wonderfully compatible in great and interconnected ways. And unlike many gaming communities, they're not shy about the fact that there's plenty of HoYay - in fact, they just might encourage shipping them. These connections - this interaction, this friendship, this relationship - is what we love about them and what would, I think, make for really exciting fanfic.
More resources: The subreddit is the major hub of the Mindcrack community; there are links on the sidebar to every member's Youtube page, as well as twitch.tv (for livestreams). There's also the website of the owner of the server, which includes links and instructions for the official IRC chatroom. More fannish content, including a list of every fanfic ever written for the fandom and regular group rewatches of old cooperative content, is at the Dreamwidth, where I'm the moderator.

Date: Tuesday, October 9th, 2012 07:04 pm (UTC)I definitely have plans to write posts about individual Mindcrackers, but it's a bit on the back burner compared to other things, like challenges from other fandoms and, uh, studying for major things I should study for. >.> If you'd like to contribute any (or participate in any other way - tell us your reactions to videos old or new, write, draw, generally have fannish fun), feel free to!
