Fanfic - Passengers
Sunday, May 26th, 2013 08:55 pmI decided to write the second chapter of the hitchhiker thing instead, because...because. Because imagining people as aliens amuses me.
Chapter 2
The small escape craft was designed for four people, but it barely fit two. Tons of extraneous electronics lined the craft, large beeping panels of shimmering crystal sandwiched between heavy metal gizmos, oil leaking from small cracks.
“Are you sure this craft is safe?” MC said nervously as he strapped himself in. Pakratt nodded absentmindedly as he flicked several switches. “It's mostly safe. Just don't touch anything that's blinking.” MC frowned as he realized most of the spacecraft seemed to be made of blinking lights of various hues. “Uh, Pakratt...” MC stuttered before suddenly grasping onto his seat as they hurtled off the ground, spinning wildly around. “Hm, the gyro button must have been hit.” Pakratt said calmly as MC whimpered, closing his eyes.
The craft continued to whirl around in an what felt to be an increasingly unstable trajectory, before suddenly stopping. “See MC, nothing to worry about! We're here! Watch your step.” Pakratt unbuckled MC as he stepped out of the craft. MC opened his eyes as he peered out into the larger craft they were docked with.
“Oh my.” The spaceship was crammed to the gills with items. Motors stood atop reams of books, nestled next to crates of soda and explosives. Small walkways seemed to wind their way around the ship. He did have to admit the parts of the ship not full of items were impeccably clean. “Ah, yeah, well. Life of a wandering merchant means you pick up a few things here and there.” Pakratt said, running a hand through his hair. “I thought you worked for the Guide?” MC said as he stepped out of the landing craft into the cramped ship. “I do, it's part time work. I'm more in the business of getting hitchhikers out of random jams and selling people stuff.” Pakratt said as he started to make his way through the ship. “Speaking of random jams, you might want to follow me if you want to see the planet explode.”
MC carefully followed Pakratt, carefully trying to not knock anything over. Whenever he brushed against a stack of items, tiny flying robots came flying out from tiny nooks and crannies, tsked him loudly, and corrected whatever minor defect he had caused. By the time the two of them had made it to the control room, he had managed to be admonished fifteen times. Pakratt pointed at a small chair precariously perched on a pile of pink parachutes. “You can sit, I'll stand.” Pakratt said as he flipped on the view screen.
The view screen flickered on, showing the planet below them. A small red ship hanged in the air near. Minuscule metal arms extended from the side of the red craft, holding onto a tiny detonator switch. The craft pushed the button, before raising it's arms to it's face, as though to shield itself.
The planet exploded in a technicolor burst of dazzling rocks and dust. The ship rocked slightly as the wave of debris washed over it, leaving it unscathed. “Hopefully that satisfied the mob. And now that's done we can get a move on, hm?” Pakratt frowned at the screen as it started flashing incoming call. “Oh right.” Pakratt waved his hand at the screen, allowing the call to appear on screen.
“So, did you save the person who was stupid enough to be down on the planet? I guess I should have called you before destroying the planet, but oh well! It seems you're safe now!” A tall cloaked figure swaddled in black cloth stared at Pakratt and MC, his four arms idly tapping at the chair he was seated on. “Oh yes, he's fine. Is this a social call, or a business call?” Pakratt said, tilting his head.
The figure shuffled around, his bright red eyes staring out from the black cloth. “Can't it be both? I know you like collecting people as well as things, and you've been trying to convince me to join your ship for awhile now. Since this job is over, and I don't have any lined up, I was wondering if I could join you for awhile. I get all the explosives you come across, and I'll do wiring all the explosions you ever need.”
“We'll be a bit crowded, but as long as you don't mind sharing bunk beds, we'll have room!” The figure relaxed slightly. “Oh good. Let me just get a shuttle over before they destroy this ship!” The figure got up, running a hand along the bottom of the screen, causing Pakratt's screen to go black. Pakratt turned to MC, shrugging.
“That wasn't expected, but allow me to warn you of our newest crew member. He's a bit focused when it comes to making things explode. He also likes to play tricks on people. He's not violent, but I'm pretty sure he could destroy the ship without a second though. He owes me a few favours, so he likely won't destroy the ship. If he does, there will be a few surprises for him.” MC stared at Pakratt, his eyes wide. “Uh, does he have a name?” MC managed to ask, looking concerned. “Oh, yeah. I don't think his species uses names much, but he responds to Etho sometimes,” Pakratt said as he started to make his way to the docking area. “You can stay here if you want, I'll go get him.” MC nodded, relieved to stay in the control room instead of disturbing the flying creatures again.
Shortly after, Pakratt lead the figure into the room. MC blinked. The view screen must be deceptive, since Etho seemed quite a bit shorter then the screen lead him to believe. He seemed to be no taller then himself. MC extended his hand, which Etho took with all four of his hands, shaking it vigorously. “Hi there new crew mate! And what is your job here on the ship?” Etho said, letting go of MC. “He's a writer for the Guide.” Pakratt said, nodding at MC who nodded emphatically. “Oh! Make sure to write about how awesome my explosions are!” Etho said.
“Right, so you two will have to bunk together. We're picking up a fourth in a bit, and they always prefer their own room. It'll be a bit cramped, sorry. Etho, you know where the bunks are, want to show MC where they are?” Pakratt said. Etho nodded, wrapping two arms around MC, dragging him of his precarious perch. Several small scuttling robots chittered at them as they set the chair back properly.
“Hi roomie! I hope you don't mind the top bunk, it's hard for me to maneuver in there.” Etho said, dragging MC through the towers of items, bumping them both into the stacks, causing the creatures keeping the stacks tidy to howl in tiny, impotent rage. Etho giggled softly as they did, staring at them until they fell quiet, doing their jobs. “Just gotta show them who's boss. Also remind them how I exploded a few of them.” Etho said, nodding his head sagely.
“Do you know who we're picking up?” MC asked, confused as to what exactly was happening. Etho shook his head, sounding amused. “Why would I? I just joined Pakratt's crew on a whim today! Oh, here we are.” Etho stopped in front of what appeared to be a small rectangular hole in the wall, cut in two by a board. “Up you go!” Etho said as he grabbed MC, shoving him into the top half of the wall. MC yelped with surprise, before looking around where he was. The area beyond was actually quite a bit larger then he though, a rather spacious bed with a small nook crammed with books. He faintly heard Etho climbing into the space below him. “Good night little hitchhiker, sleep well! I'll wake you for breakfast.” Etho said as the wall closed, leaving MC to stare at the ceiling in silence.
This has certainly been an adventure MC thought to himself, yawning as he crawled under the blankets. He didn't realize it was only the start to his very confusing series of travels with an even more eclectic crew.
