Respect for the Dead, Ho!
~~~~~~<3~~~~~~
Zisteau drained the last of his 3rd bottle of Belgian Ale and cracked his neck. They were 4 hours into this season's contest and by this point the alcohol was the only thing keeping him going. He supposed he had his heritage to thank for being able to hold his liquor so well.
His teammates hadn't had nearly as much to drink as he, but they were both quite tipsy, and poor Doc sounded like he would pass out from sheer exhaustion if they didn't end this soon. There were still 8 people left however, and though their team of three had a huge advantage being the last with all its members intact, they knew it was still anybody's game. Even the lone VintageBeef could come back and surprise them with a proper use of tactics and the right gear.
They couldn't afford to drop their guard. Not now. Not when they were so close.
Climbing through a jungle, and headed for the usual final battleground of 0,0, their plan was simple: Build a fortress, clear the area of its foliage, and challenge the remaining foes to even dare to attack them.
If they could dig in, they were confidant their supplies would last well through the final battle.
Something else plagued the Pigman, a thought at the back of his mind that he couldn't shake. Doc had lost Etho, and BDubs had lost Guude, and neither of them had had to face their sweethearts in battle. But Kurt was still out there. And he found himself hoping he wouldn't have to be the one to deal the killing blow to the Farlander. He had expected it, of course. For all his self-depreciating comments about how he was no good at anything, Kurt always ranked highly in these contests. And if it was him who had to face the Explorer, if it was he who had to end this with a bowshot, or a sword thrust...
He wasn't sure he could do it.
Shaking the thoughts from his head, the Nether-dweller returned his mind to the situation at hand. They were nearing 0,0, and rapidly. Wary as ever, Zisteau warned his teammates to expect that they were not the only ones with this plan. And they certainly would not be the only ones headed for the origin point.
They found out quickly they weren't the first ones there.
Zisteau saw the back of Kurt's head before Doc did, but he found he couldn't call out. He had the briefest thought to warn Kurt to get away... But before he could do anything, Doc spotted him, called for the attack, and charged.
It was over in seconds. Kurt didn't even have time to draw his weapon.
As the Farlander fell, covered in blood, his gear tumbling to the ground and rolling down the hillside, they heard Avidya cry out to his fallen comrade, and arrows began flying in more rapidly than they thought possible.
Zisteau wanted to go to him, wanted to hold him as he took his dying breaths, wanted to apologize... But Doc ordered him after Avidya, and he'd be branded a traitor if he didn't give chase.
His heart wasn't in it, and he quickly lost track of the last member of Team Sobriety in the woodland area. Sighing and shaking his head, he returned. He held his temper, and his tongue, by some miracle, as he saw his partners looting the corpse of his beloved.
Then BDouble0 looked up at him, and in his eyes was the most sincere and sorrowful apology he had ever seen. This had been his friend too, and in his heart he knew Doc was the only one of them who would have been capable of felling the Farlander.
This was the way it had to be.
Tears in his eyes, Zisteau walked over, slowly and BDubs gave him a sad smile.
"You should be proud." He said quietly, handing Zisteau something heavy, and very warm. He looked down at it, and just barely choked back a sob.
"He had a Bucket of Lava."
~~~~~~<3~~~~~~
After they had cleared the area and repelled Avidya's counter attack, Zisteau took a few moments to bury Kurt while Doc kept watch.
BDubs came to help, and they each placed a flower on the shallow grave, resting Kurt's armor against the quick headstone Zisteau had carved.
"He fought hard." BDubs said, trying to console him. "It was just a stroke of bad luck."
"Always seems to be that with him." The Pigman said with a chuckle. He cracked open his last bottle of ale. The event had sobered him considerably, and sober was the last thing he wanted to be right now.
Buds took out his own bottle and cracked it open as Zisteau sprinkled a little of his drink onto Kurt's grave.
"Here's to the fallen." The Human said quietly, raising his drink.
The Pigman clinked his bottle against BDubs' and used the strong drink to help swallow the lump he felt welling up in his throat. Then they went back up to the watchtower, as Zisteau's fist tightened around Kurt's Lava Bucket.
They still had work to do, but... It would all be over soon.
So how'd I do? I was trying to keep this one serious, so I didn't include any of the Uppercat Derps from the episode. I thought to write in Avidya's counterattack, but that wasn't really the focus of the story, so I didn't really see a point.
Let me know what you guys think!
