This story is definitely... different... from what I normally write. You have been warned - I'm not really sure if I should add the "warning gore" tag to this one, as on one hand there isn't any actual gore but there is a significant amount of violence (if there was a "warning: heavy violence" tag, I would definitely use it). It's also not another installment of On the Wings of the Past (though that may or may not be on its way), but I hope that it will still be interesting. Also, because I'm trying out new things with this story, the segments are in reverse order (other than the final segment, which is last in chronological order).

Downing the potion, Vechs prepared himself behind his cobble wall. As soon as he’d consumed all of the stronger version of the potion, he dashed out toward the enemy, drawing the knife he’d prepared specifically for this strategy.

He sprinted, locking on to the first target that he saw splitting from the pack - the bleeding fish for the hungry shark. A twisted smile crossed his lips as the sand flew under his rapidly moving feet. The knife had only swung twice to get used to the accelerated speed before it was already in range and tearing through his target, passing through their armour almost as though wasn’t there. Two lines crossed through their torso, gashes of almost pixelated bright red polygons - the system’s way of showing damage - through where their flesh should have been;  before their entire body exploded into the same glowing red shapes, disappearing completely, the knife still moving through the empty space trying to finish a combo on a target that was already gone.

Fingers drumming a beat on the now red-covered hilt of the knife, Vechs was already sprinting at his next target, their red hair flowing and eyes filled with fear as she glanced behind her, but Vechs didn’t register that. He just saw another body that needed to be split into smaller pieces. As she noticed that she wasn’t going to get away, she turned to face her opponent, but he was even faster than she’d thought, and his knife was flashing before she could even get her sword turning in the right direction.

Two flashes of bright, glowing blue, and two great red lines had opened across her chest. One more flash and the sword arm that was trying to turn against her opponent stopped its movement and instead started falling, a line of red at it’s top end and a matching one on Aurey’s shoulder. Her other arm started to move to futilely hold out her hand to ward off the onslaught, but another blue flash at it also started heading toward the ground. Another two quick swings and a another red line appeared across her torso, and her left leg stopped supporting her weight and joined her arms in the journey downward. She kicked her remaining leg upward in an attempt to not fall on her face, but as soon as she’d completed the movement, her remaining leg stopped responding and the final limb headed ground-ward.

For one remaining microsecond Aurey’s body hung in the air, eyes full of fear and clouded with pain taking in the only thing remaining in her rapidly decreasing field of vision - the twisted smile on her attacker’s face, and her own gruesome reflection on his goggles. Before her lips could even open to scream, there was one last flash of blue, and Aurey’s torso was removed of it’s final appendage. As Vechs continued to sprint across the sand, trying to find a new target, a limbless  torso exploded into red polygons in his wake, and a ball of red with two dimming green specks rolled across the sand.

“Vechs, what are you doing! Hey, give back that diamond!” BTC screamed as Vechs grabbed the final diamond left over from the enchanting table and attached a hilt to it, in a shovel-esque fashion, though it looked odd for a shovel, before he broke off most of the shovel’s hilt to form what looked eerily like a knife. As he held it out, a sheath appeared for in a similar manner to how items appeared from their inventory to cover the blade, and then a long strap appeared attached to the sheath, allowing Vechs to shoulder the strap like a sash and store it over his chest (though it was probably meant to be worn as a belt). As he looked at it, smiling, BTC yelling at him snapped back to reality.

“WHAT ARE YOU DOING!” BTC thundered, crowding Vechs’ space in one of the least friendly ways possible. “We could have used that to make a sword, or maybe even armour later!”

If we got more diamonds.” Vechs replied. “But you know we probably won’t be doing that, as we’re headed to the surface right now anyway. Besides, I have a feeling this knife of mine will come in handy.” Vechs finished, smiling and swirling the Speed II potion bottle he held between two of his fingers.

“You have a plan, don’t you.” BTC replied, a mixture of curiosity and disapproval in his voice. “And be more careful with that potion bottle!”

Vechs simply smiled in return, and jerked his hand back when BTC tried to grab at the potion.

“BTC, got any sharpness books?”

“No…. I do have some unenchanted ones, though.” He replied, and then start pulling the items in question into reality.

“Great, thanks.” Vechs replied before taking the leather bound pages and pouring runes from them from the floating book on the enchanting table. As soon as he’d finished, he moved over to the anvil and started using his inventory abilities to combine the books. “Sharp three!” He exclaimed once he was finished.

“Aren’t…..” BTC started, pausing a few seconds to give Vechs an opportunity to act before continuing. “You going to put that on your sword?”

“Nah. Besides, I can enchant that normally.” Vechs said as if that was all that needed to be said on the topic. “Hmm…. I hope this is enough to go all the way through a player…..”

“It should at least shred non-magic armour with no problem….” BTC replied, confused and somewhat creeped out by the dark turn his partner’s words had taken.

BTC stood up straight by his couple of furnaces, using his inventory abilities to quickly check between them, waiting for the iron he needed to make the anvil. Right as he got the last of the iron, a loud ‘ahha!’ from Vechs almost startled him into dropping the incredibly hot metal he’d just pulled from the furnaces.

“What’ve you done now?” BTC asked dryly, looking at his partner as the other man straightened up from working a a brewing start, light blue potions in his hands.

“Speed potions!” Vechs said happily, a wide smile breaking out across his face. “Got any glowstone?”

“I thought you hated speed two potions?” BTC asked quizzically before pulling up his inventory to check if he hand any of the dust in question.

“I did, but in this the way they work is by improving your limb movement and reaction speed, right?”

“Yeeaahhh?” BTC replied, confident in his answer, but completely baffled as to what Vechs’ question had to do with anything.

“Perfect!” Vechs replied, his broad smile returning. “So, do you have any? Oh wait, nevermind, I had some.”

“You freaking...” BTC trailed off as he stopped the removal of the bit of glowstone dust he had from his hammerspace-like inventory.

“RIGHT! Welcome back, Sethbling here-” Seth said, before he was interrupted by the light provided by the sun inside the virtual reality those in the pods were experiencing flickered.

“Um, Seth?” Guude asked from inside the virtual world, his head turned upward toward the sky as his way of addressing one of the two who were remaining in Minecraftia as the rest of the mindcrackers went ‘full dive’ as Seth had taken to calling it.

“Err, I think everything is still fine?” Seth said, but it was more of a question than a statement. “Etho?”

“Good as far as I can tell. J-Quellin, is anything wrong?” Etho asked his computer set up, using his unique way of pronouncing Jacklin.

“No. The program is running normally.” The computerized voice replied.

“Ookaay then….” Seth said, before returning and addressing those in the virtual world - a very close simulation of Minecraftia, or as Seth was fond of saying ‘replicated to the finest detail’. “Um, I think everything’s working normally. Thanks for coming to stress test the system, you guys can try to log out now, if you want.” Seth finished.

Quickly, those with tight schedules opened the menus in the same way they did in their normal lives, and tried to use the ‘log out’ button new to the menu now that they were in VR - but nothing happened.

“Uh, guys?” Many of those that tried to exit said to no one in particular, though mostly to the two outside running the whole operation.

“Seth, one of the pre-set programs is starting!” Etho yelled back in Minecraftia.

“What? Which one?”

“Whatever was run last… UHC Sim?” Etho asked, slightly confused by the name of the program running.

“Shoot… That would explain why they can’t log out, you’re not supposed to be able to leave UHC…. Er, what’re the settings?”

“Adim-chosen Partners, zero dampening-” Etho started to read off before Seth cut him off.

“Crap! Uh, guys, we’re having an issue here. One of the programs is running. Uh, it’s a last-team-standing deathmatch, where you need to kill the other teams, and you can’t log out until the program is over. There’s also no health regen, you’re going to need to use healing items. But, uh, the pain dampeners are completely off - you’ll feel wounds the way you would if you got them out here in real life. We could try to log out guys out manually, but that’d mean removing the safet-” Seth started, but Etho cut him off.

“Basically, you could die if we tried that. You guys are just going to have to put up with the pain and try to play the game. I’d also suggest actually playing, because it looks like J-Quellin’s running the thing, and she’s got a sick sense of humor… She might try to ‘correct’ your behavior if you don’t actually play correctly, and while I have no idea what that’ll mean, I can guarantee you won’t like it….”

“Basically, it’s probably just in your guys’ best interest to just play this thing out. I am so, so sorry…”

Once Vechs and Blame, standing back to back, had slain the last of the enemies, the world faded around them as a bright light washed over their vision. Back in Minecraftia, the lids to the virtual reality pods began to cascade open - returning Vechs and Blame to normal life, and arousing those who had died from their state of unconsciousness.

As their first action after standing up out of the pods, about half the Mindcrackers doubled over and threw up - particularly those who had run across Vechs once he’d put his Speed-potion-and-knife strategy to work. Whether they had actually fallen to him or simply seen what had happened to their comrades who were unfortunate enough to fall prey to his blade, it was still enough to cause them to double over with many others and ruin the perfect floor Sethbot had spent the past hour or two cleaning.

One person, however, was beyond even that. Once they’d managed to stagger out of their pod, their knees gave way and the simply fell to the ground, before curling into a ball. That one person happened to be the one who’s head had gone rolling across the sand, wrapped in it’s own hair. She’d suffered the most at Vechs’ blade. After he’d moved on from her, he’d started to dial back the attack somewhat - realizing that it was far beyond what was needed to kill his opponent, and just cause additional trauma. Some still lost a limb or two, and a few’s heads were separated from their bodies, but none had gone through the torture Aurey had.

Torture was definitely the correct word for it, because not even the fact that he’d appeared to end her suffering only moments after it started gave Aureylian respite. Because the fighting had continued for another few hours after Aurey had fallen, and she hadn't been allowed to exit the pod until the program was over, she’d spent that entire time feeling either the excruciating and terrifying feeling of having all of her limbs removed, or the stomach turning feeling of not being connected to her body, or any of the feelings between the two - though, luckily for her, she wasn’t fully conscious to experience them, she still definitely felt them. Not once during the entire time was she in a state that her was getting feedback from all her limbs.

Once she managed to open her eyes, she saw the goggles that she’d seen what was basically her corpse reflected in. The same terror that had been in her eyes for those few nanoseconds started to return as the memory flooded back to her.

“Hey, are you alright?” Vechs asked, extending a hand down toward Aurey. Her only response was to order her still numb limbs to scramble backward, away from the monster that hand caused her so much pain - not that they worked well enough yet to effectively comply. She managed to move about a foot before her back pressing up against the pod she’d recently excited from stopped her from moving. A confused look crossed Vechs’ face and he started to move to follow Aurey, before an outstretched arm stopped him, blocking his path.

“Can’t you see she’s hurt?” Sevadus, owner of the arm and Aurey’s partner before he’d been the first to fall to the knife, asked Vechs coldly. “And that she doesn’t want to be near you right now? Go bother someone else.”

“Uh…” Vechs said weakly, and equal mixture of stunned and confused. “O-okay..” He finished slowly before starting to move away.

“Can you stand?” Vechs heard Sevadus asking softly from behind him as he moved away, noticing Sevadus helping Aurey up in his peripheral vision a second or two later. The fearful look in his direction was the last thing he saw before he sharply twisted his head away to stop looking.

It was at that point that he noticed the negative look that Zisteau, who he had been heading toward, was giving him. Then he noticed some of those who’s limbs he’d removed standing shakily, heavily either supporting themselves against their pods or their partner from the ‘game’, if it could be called that, the group had just excited. Then he finally noticed the overall, crushing, general look that nearly everyone but Blame in the group was giving him. None of the looks were nice ones.

What have I done? Vechs asked himself as he spun around and felt the same soul-crushing looks of betrayal from every direction.

What have I done?

Oooh that was really gruesome!!! I LOVE IT!! :P
Was this by chance based off of Sword Art Online? It seemed to resemble some of the machanics of the game on that show...
