Here we go with chapter 9, in which Kurt overcomes his insecurities and does a bit of research, revealing something that's possibly detrimental.
Kurt's POV
I place the last piece of cobble down and step back, surveying the layout I had chosen.
"I dunno about this.... what do you think Wolfie?" I ask the shaggy dog lying by my feet.
Upon hearing his name, Wolfie looks at me, then at the cobble, then back to me. Wolfie barks and lays his head back on his paws.
"Thanks for the input" I say sarcastically, looking at the cobble skeptically.
I kick at a loose stone, sending it flying "I just need to be more confident."
I sit beside Wolfie, resting my head on my knees.
How can I be more confident when I can't even build a foundation. I groan in frustration. I don't know why I ever thought this was possible. why I ever thought I'd be able to build something. and, I thought if be able to talk to Zisteau, I don't honestly think I can, especially after seeing how bad I'm doing just trying to lay down some cobble.
"Hey... you ok Kurt?"
I glance up and see Beef standing over me, casting a shadow.
"Just Frustrated"
"Oh?" Beef sits down beside me, petting Wolfie.
"Dinnerbone talked to me yesterday, after the meeting, and he gave me an idea. he also told me to try to be more confident. so, I tried to build and I just can't seem to get anywhere. its frustrating." I pick up a stone and run the smooth surface "I just don't think I can be confident, no matter how hard I try, It just doesn't work."
"Kurt... It may seem rough right now, but you'll get it." Beef says, casting his gaze on me "you know, yesterday, I was working on my castle, and I built a whole tower, just to tear it down again. building is frustrating but, you'll never know what you can come up with unless you try. it may not always be perfect, but you have to try."
"... Thanks.... Beef, really. I'm gonna try to continue I guess."
"Good." Beef smiles and stands up, stretching slightly. "have a good day, Kurt."
"You too" I say as I watch him walk down the road.
~~~<3~~~
I place the final brick, after almost falling twenty times. I carefully get down and step back, looking at the building before me.
"Eh... it's not to bad a actually." I say to myself."
Now I just need to do the interior and I'm done.
~~~<3~~~
I finished putting the last code into the computer set up along the wall.
"Hey"
I turn around and see Zisteau, standing just inside the doorway to the dome.
"Oh... Hey" I say, closing the program and turning to look at him
"I like what you've done here. its very simplistic. I think it fits your style."
I blush slightly, thankful for the dim lighting "thanks...."
"So.. what's this about exactly? I thought you were kinda against trying to build something"
"I uh... I was... but I'm trying to be more confident...."
"More confident, eh?"
And there it was. the moment I could really be confident. the moment I could tell Zisteau presented itself. now all I have to do is be confident enough to take it.
But what if he doesn't like me... what if he never wants to speak to me again....
"Kurt...." Zisteau says, now standing in front of me.
"Huh?" I ask, confused as I was pulled out of my worried thoughts.
"You uh spaced out there"
"S... sorry" I blush again
"It's fine. I know you have a lot on your mind. you usually do"
"Um... yeah... about that" I take a deep breath. steadying myself. "there's uh... something I wanted to tell you..."
"Oh?" Zisteau asks, looking intrigued
"I uh... I think... I uh... like you.."
"I'd hope so since we've been friends for a few weeks now." Zisteau says, chuckling
"Not... not like that... I like, like you... as in more than friends...."
"Oh, in that case, I like you too."
I stare at him incredulously
"You know, I have liked you for a while, but I know you can be insecure, so I didn't want to pressure you with such a trivial thing."
"I... I wouldn't call it trivial... it's more important than that...."
"Yeah. it is" Zisteau says, intertwining our fingers gently "now, tell me what you've got going on here, looks complicated.
I smile "astronomy. I want to research about the stars here. I want to compare them to the ones back home, on earth."
"Have any theories yet?"
"Yes, actually. I think they'll be the same, all the same constellation, same thing. though I'm not so sure about other planets."
"What were you doing on the computer?"
"Setting up a program to input all the stars cords. it will help diagram and track all the locations."
"Sounds..... sciencey."
I laugh "yeah... it is."
~~~<3~~~
"I've gotta head back to my base. got a lot of work to do." Zisteau says, as we make our way down the stairs.
"I'll walk with you to spawn. gotta talk to Guude."
"Makes the trip even better"
I send him a smile and we make our way out the door, Wolfie close behind. our hands brush and Z intertwines our fingers, gently squeezing.
We reach spawn and I see Guude, talking to Pause by town hall.
Zisteau suddenly stops, so I stop as well.
"I message you later."
"Ok" I reply
Zisteau squeezes my hand slightly, before heading off, down the road.
I walk over to Guude and Pause. I catch part of the conversation they were having.
"You owe me ten diamonds." Guude says
"I didn't think they'd actually get together"
"Well they did, and you owe me ten diamonds."
"Oh, hey Kurt" Pause says, noticing me.
"Hey... Guude... I was wondering if I could talk to you." I say
"Yeah, sure."
Pause pouts, but leaves.
"So?"
"Right... I was wondering if you had a way to contact Dinnerbone. I need some stuff for my research."
"Research?"
"Yeah. I'm study the stars and I wanted to compare them to the ones back on earth."
"Umm... not sure I do. I'll let you know if can, ok?"
"Ok. thanks Guude."
"No problem. by the way, what got you to finally ask Z out?"
I feel my face heat up "I guess I finally found some confidence...."
"That's great, and it got me ten diamonds"
I stare at him incredulously "you had a bet?"
"Yep, and I won."
"Well uh.... I'm gonna go... thanks again..."
"See ya"
I walk back towards the observatory.
~~~<3~~~
"I heard you needed some star charts."
I turn around and see Dinnerbone standing in the center of the dome.
"Ah.... yes.... I did."
"Well here you go, they are all on this flash drive. the first one is from 1975."
Dinnerbone hands me the flash drive
I take it "thanks"
"So, I heard you talked to Zisteau, how'd it go?"
"It uh... it went well."
"That's great, just remember to be confident"
And, with that, Dinnerbone vanishes.
I plug in the flash drive bringing up the menu. I copy and past all of the files into the program.
I pull up the most recent version of today's date. the file was a year old. I glance up at the night sky, noticing something weird. The night sky here had a lot of vibrant beautiful stars, while one the screen there were a few less stars, and quiet a few really dim ones.
Huh.....
I pull up a version of today's date from five years ago. it looked similar but with dimming stars.
I pull up another one from twenty years ago, and it looked exactly the same as the sky tonight.
I pull out my journal and write an entry.
10-5-15
Today's the first day of research and I've found something quiet odd. it would seem that the two worlds have the same star cords. I was comparing the star charts and the one from twenty years ago looks identical to today. the one from five years ago looks similar but, there seems to be some stars that had been becoming dimmer. then the most recent one I received was from last year and it was drastically different. A lot of the stars were missing, like they just disappeared, some more were dimming as well.
I'll have to tell this to Guude, see what he thinks. I think something drastic is happening back on Earth, something that could be deadly.
Kurt's POV
