The Young Queen - Chapter 1 - The Homecoming
Monday, August 18th, 2014 10:27 pmOkay, so a quick word about the prologue. I know, it was short and rushed, and I apologize for that, but I didn’t want to put it on a “Mental shelf”, if you will. That’s what I had been doing since like chapter two of The Boulderfist, and I was very tired when I wrote it. I didn’t want to put it of any longer, so yeah, I am sorry. Anyway, explanation/apology over. Time for some serious magic.

She was twelve when she finally learned who she was. It had been twelve years since she was born, twelve years since her parents died. She was raised by a knight, one of the most honorable ones, Paul Soares Jr. His partner was a mage, the apprentice of the Guard Mage in the throne room. She was killed along with the Queen’s parents. But now, the kingdom had a new Queen.
“Aurey, your tutor is waiting. You may not want to make her impatient.” Paul said from the door.
“But, I’m Queen now! Can’t she tutor me on my time?”
“Not how it works. Sorry.”
“You speak with no respect. Past Queens had beheaded people for being disrespectful.”
“Your great grandmother banned beheadings a long time ago. You know that.” He told her, smiling at her attempt to be sassy. He knew she was trying to be sassy by the look on her face.
“I’m Queen! I do what I want!”
“Nope, one of your ancestors decreed that royalty is not above the law.”
“Is there anything they didn’t ban?”
“They didn’t ban you going to the tutor.”
“Paul! You’re mean.”
“I know I am, and you know you love it.”
“Go away Paul.” She said, laughing.
“ Go to class, come on, I’ll even walk you down there, if you want.”
“Why do you always make me go to class? I mean, let me have a day off!”
“Sorry. I want the best for my daughter. Go to class, Aurey.”
“I’m not technically your daughter.” She mumbled, walking out.
Paul frowned, walking to the chair at the corner of the throne room. That’s all he had ever wanted, a family. He would never get a real family, a girl of his own, or a boy to follow in his footsteps as a knight. He watched the person he wanted to be with for the rest of his life fall into sand. But he treated the young Queen just like he would his own, and he would until the day he died.
A few hours later, Aurey came back into the room, to find Paul asleep.
“Why doesn’t that surprise me anymore?” She asked herself.
“Maybe because you come in here every day and see him asleep?” A voice called from the door.
The Queen spun around, to see a familiar face.
“Pause! You’re back!” She yelled, half in surprise, half in glee.
“Yeah. My group got attacked. Took an arrow to the arm.” He said, holding up a very much bandaged arm,”They said they had to discharge me.”
“Well, I’m glad you’re home, no matter the circumstances.” She said, giving him a hug,”You and Beef have been gone forever.”
“We sure have.” Another voice yelled, easily identified as Beef.
“You’re home too? Both my best friends, home in the same day!” She exclaimed happily.
“So, how have things gone while we’ve been gone? I mean, you never wrote.” Beef asked.
“Was afraid of what I’d hear if I did. That would be a terrible way to find out…”
“Find out what? We are the best fighters in the kingdom, you know that.” Pause told her.
“Well you took an arrow… I was worried, okay!” She said, giving him another hug.
“I like how he gets to hugs and I’m left over here, hugless and alone.” Beef joked, earning a hug from the queen.
“Hey, who are you?” It was Paul, who was on the floor now. The others had been too occupied to notice.
“Hey dad, you remember Pause and Beef, right?”
“They look older. More bandaged than I remember.”
“Yeah, leave it to me to get hurt, and Beef to get discharged early.”
“Why’d they discharge you early, Beef?”
“Cause me and Pause… Well, let’s say I’m not leaving his side any time soon.”
“Oh… Oh! Great for you two!” Aurey said, half genuinely, half jealous. She had a thing for Pause, and she had since they were in school.
“Yeah, they couldn’t break this up.” Beef said, pointing at himself and Pause.
“Yeah, I see that.” The queen said with an inaudible sigh.
They talked for a while, walking around the room, with Aurey showing off anything and everything in it, from the chair in the corner, to the throne she sat on.
“Hey, this is all pretty neat.” Beef told her.
“Yeah, all because I ended up royalty. Aren’t you jealous?” She laughed.
“A soldier’s life is a good on-” Pause was interrupted by the doors bursting open.
“Who..” Paul started, but cut himself off as he saw who was there.
“Necromancers.”

Well, that’s a wrap folks. Hopefully that was much better quality than the last. Hope you enjoyed!
