Pause and Beef walked out onto the grassy field hand in hand. They had become so close recently, that none of the Mindcrackers ever saw the two apart, even during competitive challenges. They were constantly kissing each other lightly, and even on occasions going into full on make out sessions in the middle of the community meetings. But no one could argue that they made every day brighter with their silly games and constant talking about anything they felt the need to.
“Where are you taking me today, Pause?” Beef asked, confused by how secretive the normally outright Pause was. Pause just looked back and flashed Beef his wonderful smile.
“You’ll see Beef. So don’t get all annoyed when you don’t know. Besides, we’re almost there,” Pause replied to his bearded companion. He leaned in and kissed him lightly on the cheek, and proceeded to their destination.
“Okay Beef. You can look now,” Pause announced as he turned Beef to face the building before them. Beef opened his eyes, and gasped in complete astonishment.
“Pause! I-I don’t know what to say to this! Thank you!” Beef cried out as he ran towards the wooden building in from of him. But building was quite the understatement. The place was much more like a mansion. It had four massive and spacious floors, with ornate wooden stairs and beautiful stain-glass windows overlooking the main entryway. Beef was already halfway up the first flight of stairs by the time Pause opened he the front door. Pause called after Beef, but Beef was so wrapped up in the beauty of the house, he didn’t hear Pause’s shouts.
He ran through the hallways, which had long ornate carpets on the floor that was made from quartz blocks. Beef felt so alive looking at such a nice place, so he let out a small chuckle and sprinted down the long hall, leaving Pause to wander after him, looking around calling out his name.
The chase went on for another few hours, and by the time Beef ran back down to the entryway, the sun was filtering through the stain-glass windows. The design on the glass shone down onto the floor and depicted a meat cleaver crossed over an arrow, and a bow crossed behind them. Pause came out onto the second floor landing and sighed with relief at finding Beef finally. He walked down the stairs, but heard something he wasn’t expecting. He heard sobbing and Beef’s shoulders were shaking. Pause ran and jumped down the last few steps, coming up to Beef in just another few seconds.
“Beef?” he asked, very concerned that he had been injured or hurt by something. Beef turned to face Pause with tears running down his cheeks, which gave way to the smile that Beef’s face held.
“Pause… I… I don’t know what to… I,” Beef broke off and began to sob. Pause patted his shoulders, but Beef pulled Pause into a large hug and gave him a kiss on the lips to silence any words Pause was going to say. They stood there for a minute, illuminated by the picture in the window and the evening sun. They broke apart slowly after that, and Beef looked into Pause’s brown eyes and began to speak again.
“I love it Pause! Did you build this? I can’t believe it! Am I dreaming? If I am, please tell me I don’t have to wake up.”
“Of course I built it Beef! I would do anything for you! And this isn’t a dream, so enjoy waking up. We’ll be right next to each other until our last days on the server. And even after that,” Pause told him as Beef took him into a hug once more. They simply stood in an embrace until the sun finally went down and Beef’s stomach voiced it’s own opinion on what it wanted to do. Pause led Beef to the kitchen, where he and Beef worked seamlessly, Beef slicing the meat expertly and ridding the slab of meat of any fat, and Pause getting the seasoning ready for the steaks. Dinner was ready within the hour, and they sat next to each other at their large table, their dinner lit by hand-crafted candles on the table right next to them and a large glowstone chandelier above them, hanging from the domed ceiling.
“Pause,” Beef told his boyfriend while happily digging into his steak. “I love you so much. I mean, you built this amazing place all by yourself! I don’t even know how to describe how happy I am about this.” Beef leaned over and kissed Pause on the cheek lightly before he went back to his steak.
“I love you Beef. I did it for you, and I’m so happy I can be here with you,” Pause said as he went around the table and hugged Beef from behind and ran a hand through his hair and kissed his neck gently. Beef knew what Pause was implying, so he sighed and stood up, and held out an arm as if to escort Pause to their room. Pause laughed at Beef’s shenanigans, but followed anyway, talking and kissing each other on the way up. Pauses took the lead on the third floor and lead Beef to their room, and hopped into bed, taking his shirt off for Beef. Beef just smiled at Pause and reciprocated.
---
Beef woke up in his bed, and yawned happily. He had had the best day with Pause yesterday. He turned to face the other way and see if Pause was still in bed, but he saw something odd. It was his little house on the other side of the bridge from where Pause had built the house he had been in yesterday. Then it struck him, tearing him into shreds. His eyes clouded and he put his head into his palms, shaking it vigorously, hoping if he did, he would be able to forget what had happened.
“Pause…” Beef choked out in between sobs and laid back on his bed. Why was he so stupid? He couldn’t be here. Pause had left him so long ago. He couldn’t even remember his face or his laugh or his wonderful eyes when he wasn’t dreaming, and when he was, it always ended on such a high note that he felt empty every time he woke up.
Beef sighed and tried to shake the pain away. He had to do a collab with Guude later. He could face his tears when he didn’t need to get ready for some caving. He needed to get ready, but he found he couldn’t bring himself to move. His throat was closing in on itself and his sobs became even worse.
“I used to do caving with Pause… And he would always let me win…” Beef sobbed once again, this time sinking to the floor and just letting his tears fall to the carpet below him.
“Why did you go Pause?” Beef cried out in complete anguish. Then he collapsed once again and just laid there, not answering the door when anyone came by. He heard Guude, Pyro, BDubs and a few others, but he just didn’t care. That was the last straw. He couldn’t take the hope any more.
He stopped sleeping so the dreams wouldn’t come. When he did fall asleep, the dreams became ones where he was standing behind Pause, who was running, and no matter how hard he ran, he couldn’t catch Pause. He began to eat less and less, eventually just eating little chunks of rotten meat he found in the grass surrounding his house. Everything fell into disrepair and no one knew why Beef was doing these things. He shut himself away from any questions and even if anyone said his name, he would immediately freeze up before going directly home again, on the rare occasions he ventured out of his collapsing home.
He didn’t blame Pause for his pain. He blamed his delusions. He was an idiot for thinking Pause would return his feelings of love. He had been rejected by Pause in his dreams more times than he could count now. He just needed to seclude himself so he didn’t feel this pain from being rejected by anyone else. He couldn’t handle another rejection like that.
He just needed to stay away.
