Well, hello again people of Salad! I have returned from the grave with my usual AU and it is full of the fluffy feels. If any words or grammar are wrong, I sincerely apologise - I've read it too many times and so I can't see those instances now. Also, fun fact: This fic is 2,100+ words. Almost twice the length of my coursework! :D It's also my longest fanfiction to date! :D
It was the end of the school term and all the students were heading off home. Two roommates were packing their bags and just chatting about plans for their holiday. As Kurt zipped up his bags and placed them at the end of his bed, he sat down and watched his roommate. He was soon lost in thought. Eventually, he spoke slowly, “Hey Zisteau…?”
Zisteau dropped his own bags in a pile on the end of his bed before turning to his roommate, “Yeah, what’s up?”
“I was wondering… if you would… like to… come and visit my house. Over the holiday, of course. Just… you know. Never mind.” Kurt shook his head and dropped his head to look down at the floor.
Zisteau chuckled and squatted down in front of the other boy. Using two fingers, he lifted his chin and smiled, “I would love to. You know that I’ve wanted to meet your family.” He placed a soft kiss on the other’s lips.
“O-Oh um okay…” Kurt was unable to stop his small smile. Zisteau sat down next to Kurt and they both set a date on their phones. A loud knocking at the door interrupted their little world.
“Hey! Open up! Don’t tell me you two are having end-of-term sex or something! We need to go!” Vechs’ voice flowed into the room from behind the persistent knocking.
Sighing loudly, Zisteau stood up and pulled on his Zombie Pigman hoodie before walking towards the door. Without warning, he opened the door and the other boy fell into the room. “Oh, were you out there? I’m so sorry. Get up.” He offered his hand to help the boy on the floor get up. The hand was pushed away and Vechs pulled himself up.
“Thanks a lot, Pigderp.” He snorted as Zisteau walked back to Kurt, chuckling. He watched as Zisteau lent down and kissed Kurt, this time making sure it lasted a while. Vechs watched, checking his watch. He clapped his hands together loudly to bring the other two boys out of it, “Right, well. As much as I’d love to stand here and watch you guys make out, I would like to get home sometime today.”
Kurt’s eyes flicked between his roommate turned boyfriend and his boyfriend’s best friend. He slowly stood up and threw on his long coat, “Well, we should get moving then, shouldn’t we? It is wasting holiday time.”
The three lugged their bags down and through the building out to where they were to be picked up by their respective families. Zisteau was taking Vechs home and was the first out of them to find their ride home. After a parting kiss that Zisteau was intending to last longer than it possibly could, much to Vechs’ annoyance, Kurt walked off to get in his own car. It was mere minutes before his phone buzzed and the screen showed a text from Zisteau. They began to exchange texts and they never ceased throughout the holiday.
Both would constantly talk and text and chat over all various means possible – one day Zisteau found a handwritten letter from Kurt which made him smile. They’d even met up and done things on their friend group’s minecraft server. It was as if the two were inseparable.
All too quickly, the day came when they would see each other in the flesh again. Kurt began to feed his dog, Wolfie. It wasn’t an irregular thing that Kurt would end up talking to Wolfie, who else would he talk to in this house? Today, he was just babbling about anything to the dog. Wolfie seemed to be paying attention for most of the time, but he switched his focus as soon as the food was presented to him. Kurt continued to babble though, “I mean what if he doesn’t like the house? Or finds it too messy and blame me for it? Oh Wolfie, I don’t know what I would do if he didn’t like it here. I can’t not see him for the rest of the holiday… oh. What if he asks me to go to his house after today? I don’t think I could handle that, Wolfie! I mean-“
His train of thought was cut short by a rather quiet knock on the door. Wolfie’s head lifted at the noise and then he turned it to look at Kurt, who was standing still like a statue.
“Uh… I guess, I better get that, huh?” Kurt swallowed and left the kitchen, shutting the door behind him to stop Wolfie running outside. He made the short walk to the door, but just stood in front of it for a while.
Outside, Kurt couldn’t see that Zisteau was pacing, muttering phrases and conversations under his breath. The boy outside wanted to slap himself for being so nervous. He went to raise his hand but then the door began to open and Zisteau quickly moved so he was facing the door.
Upon opening the door, he couldn’t help but grin as he saw his boyfriend’s face. Both stood there for a second before Zisteau reached out and pulled Kurt into a tight hug. They split and just stared at each other for a minute, unsure on what they could even say to each other.
Kurt soon broke out of his trance, “Oh, would you like to come in?” He laughed nervously as he stepped to the side to allow his guest entrance. Kurt took his time to lock the door, giving himself several steading breaths before walking into the other room. “I’m sorry for the mess and all, just didn’t have time to clean up. My parents are out right now, doing some shopping. They’ll be back soon.”
“Hey, it’s cool. I’m not here just for your parents, Kurt.” Zisteau stood in front of Kurt, staring intently. “I’ve missed you…”
“I’ve missed you too, Zisteau.”
They both began to gravitate towards each other. It was just at the last second that Wolfie had decided to bark, alerting his owner to his trapped state. Kurt regretfully stepped away from Zisteau and opened the kitchen door. Immediately Wolfie bounded over to Zisteau, who took a little step back in nervousness.
Kurt merely chuckled, “Zisteau, this is my dog, Wolfie.” Upon hearing his name, Wolfie turned to face Kurt and sat down on the floor, head still flicking between the two boys. Kurt laughed again and began to fuss his dog, trying to encourage Zisteau to join in.
Eventually, Kurt wandered into the kitchen to grab a couple of drinks whilst leaving Zisteau to enjoy his time with Wolfie. He was pleased that Wolfie approved of his choice of boyfriend; though the dog wasn’t exactly very picky when it came to humans he met. It was his parents that worried Kurt the most. He’d never told them that Zisteau was his boyfriend; they thought they were just close friends so it was definitely going to be interesting once they returned.
He pushed the thoughts out of his mind upon returning to the main room to see Wolfie practically lying upon the boy as they both sat on the sofa. “Having fun there?”
Zisteau looked up at the other with a smile, “Oh yeah, this is just how I love to spend my days.” He took the offered drink and kept his eyes trained on Kurt as he sat on the opposite side of Wolfie. The pair began to chat about general things as they two both pet Wolfie. Eventually, they reached an impasse in terms of conversation.
Kurt’s eyes ended up being trained on his hand as he brushed it over the dog’s soft, white fur as he slept and Zisteau caught himself staring at his friend’s face. When Kurt’s eyes lifted up to glance at the others, the two of them slowly brought each other closer until they kissed. Both were oblivious to the door opening until a voice sounded.
“Hello, we’re home.”
Immediately, Kurt pulled back and flailed as he lost balance, reaching out and holding onto Zisteau. Both fell off of the sofa in a heap, Wolfie – now awake – still between them.
“Sorry,” muttered Kurt as he was focusing on getting Wolfie up and out of the tangle first. He hadn’t noticed Zisteau kneeling over him until the last second when both their faces reddened.
“Oh dear, are you three alright?” All three parties looked up to the face of Kurt’s mother. This view got Zisteau to move out of his position and help Kurt move Wolfie.
“Yes, yes. We’re fine. We’re fine. Just overbalanced is all.” Kurt replied, his pace fast and frantic. Once stood up, he hugged his mother and father before turning around to see Zisteau sitting on the floor next to the dog. “Mum, Dad. This is Zisteau, the boy I was telling you about.”
Upon hearing his name, the other boy raised his head and smiled slightly. He caught a glimpse of Kurt’s face and saw it looked almost apologetic. It took a small amount of mental thought to guess why it looked such a way. “It’s nice to meet you.”
Kurt’s father re-entered the room and they all sat themselves down in the seats in the room. Zisteau was asked questions, which he answered with a little input from Kurt every now and then. It was clear to Zisteau that Kurt had not told his family about their relationship, probably in fear of how they would react.
He kept a close eye on Kurt’s reactions and body language as the day went on. They all helped in making the dinner that Kurt’s mother had planned for the day, Zisteau enjoying it immensely as it gave Kurt something to take his mind off of the information he was obviously planning to divulge to his parents.
It was only after they’d all finished eating that Kurt seemed to gather the courage to do this. Zisteau and him conversed via their eye contact.
‘Are you sure you want to do this?’ Zisteau dipped his eyebrows to look sympathetic, ‘I know it must be hard.’
Kurt slightly nodded.
‘Okay, go on then. If you need help, just nudge me.’ A wink.
Kurt cleared his throat to gain the attention of everyone in the room. He took a deep breath and Zisteau stealthily grabbed a hold of his hand around the table leg and Wolfie came to sit next to him. Kurt smiled and looked directly at his parents.
“Mum. Dad. I haven’t been completely honest with you and I apologise for that. I should have told you sooner, but I was scared.” His gaze faltered and he glanced to Zisteau quick, who gave another encouraging squeeze. “I want to tell you that… well… um…” He took a pause and lifted his hand that Zisteau held up onto the corner of the table. The two boys held their breaths as they gauged the reaction.
The adults looked at each other and back to their son, to the other boy and then to the hands, then back to each other. Soon enough, their faces softened and they both smiled. Phrase such as “Why didn’t you tell us sooner?” and “Why would you be so scared?” were spoken as Kurt’s parents came round to their side of the table to give their son hugs.
All too soon, Zisteau had to leave. The two were left alone at the door to say their goodbyes, which ended up just being a few very choice words and several goodbye kisses. The car that was picking Zisteau up honked and he realised he did have to go. As he walked down the path, Zisteau turned around and yelled back, “See you back at school, yeah?”
“Of course! See you!” Kurt waved out of the door. He stood with the door open and watched the car pull away. Once it was out of sight, the door was shut and Kurt went to speak to his parents. “So, what did you think of him?” He nervously asked as he sat down in front of them to pet Wolfie.
“He’s such a nice kid. I think you lucked out there, son.” His father responded with a smile.
“Just remember from this. You can tell us anything and we’ll support you, okay?” His mother kissed the top of his head.
The boy couldn’t stop smiling. He left the front room to go to his bedroom, Wolfie trailing behind him. Once in there, he noticed his phone was lit up. Seating himself on the bed and coaxing the dog to curl up next to him, he picked his phone up and checked his messages. The only one was from Zisteau.
It read: School’s too far away. Come to mine someday soon? Forgot to tell you, I love you, Kurt.
He was too tired to reply and decided he would in the morning. Kurt lay his head down on the pillow and rested his phone next to his bed. He fell asleep with a smile on his face and his heart all the more lighter.
