Welcome to another instalment of Thero Plays! Today we take on the fourth Gym but before that we discuss catches, team swaps, retirements and...loss.

-0-

Last time on Thero Plays, we caught a Dwebble that had yet to be named. I'm glad to say he's gained a name thanks to your input and is now known as Genny!

As for the new catches, from Route 16, we have Etho, the male Gothita! Lvl 22 psychic type, Naughty nature, highly persistant, his ability is Frisk which allows him to see what the opponent is holding.

From Route 5, we have our first female of the game, Sixelona the Minccino! Lvl 23 normal type, Relaxed Nature, quick to flee, her ability is Technician which means that any moves which have a base power of 60 or less has its power increased by 1.5.

From Lostlorn Forest, we have Doc the male Swadloon! If MC wasn't already bad ass I'd consider switching him out for Doc, I do have a soft spot for bug types. Lvl 24 grass/bug type, Mild nature, often lost in thought, his ability is Chlorophyll, which boosts his speed in sunshine.

Now, I decided a few things during training for this gym. I knew Vechs wasn't keeping up with the team, that grinding him up was almost as dangerous as putting him into a gym battle - truthfully he's never actually been in a gym fight. His typing was already covered by Avidya (Ground/Dark) and so I decided it was time to retire our crafty kitty in order to ensure that he would still be alive by the time this run was over. To fill his slot, I brought in Etho. A good Psychic type is always welcome.

Sadly, I am inclined to believe that what happened next was down to the Curse of the Golden Record. It wasn't long after I read the story about it that I began training up the team for the next fight. Avidya was to be the MVP for this gym as he had total immunity to the type used: Electric. I say had because...well...

We were fighting trainers when it happened. The other trainer sent out a lvl 25 male Sigilyph, which is a dual Psychic/Flying type. Avidya was up front for levelling purposes and I thought we could do this, it was so simple. We had three levels on it and a type advantage on the Psychic half. Speed was Avidya's highest stat, we were sure to strike first. We could win easily.

Only we couldn't.

I'd forgotten that Ground was weak to Flying. One Air Cutter was all it took to bring Avidya down.

Avidya fainted.

Our first loss. I'm so sorry. I wanted to take him all the way, we were doing so well, three gyms and not a single loss. I should have realised that it wouldn't be that easy.

Replacing him was a tough decision. I was tempted to bring in Nebris for the type coverage, since he was of the ground type too but I worried about losing another, especially since his defense was fairly low (half his attack stat). I considered bringing Vechs back but then I retired him just so I wouldn't lose him. I didn't want to bring in Baj because Poison isn't the best type, and while bringing in Genny could have worked for good type coverage, I took a different route.

Sixelona joined the team.

Another normal type? You must think me mad. Thats three normals, a psychic, a fire/fighting and a grass type. Not the most diverse team but it works.

I chose Six for a specific reason. Technician. You remember that ability? It powers up low powered attacks. Here comes maths. Now, her moveset when I caught her included Swift, a move that never misses, with a base power of 60. With Technician, that power is bumped up to 90. I gave her Echoed Voice, a TM which I got in the city, base power 40 but if used repeatedly continually grows stronger. I gave her Dig, which has base power 80 so isn't boosted by her ability but when I gave her Soft Sand to hold, that boosts the attack of that too. As she leveled, she gained Tail Slap, which hits 2-5 times, with  a base power of 25. If by some miracle it hits every time, with the boost from her ability thats a total power of 187.

Six has speed as her highest stat (51) with attack right after that (43).

Six is going to wipe the floor with the gym for Avidya. No one else is going to die.

Now, a look at the team:

Sixelona: Lvl 30, Tail Slap, Dig, Swift, Echoed Voice. Item: Soft Sand (boosts ground)
Etho: Lvl 30, Thief, Psyshock, Psybeam, Faint Attack. Item: Twisted Spoon (boosts psychic)
M C: Lvl 30. Giga Drain, Leech Seed, Razor Leaf, Petal Dance. Item: Miracle Seed (boosts grass)
Beef: Lvl 30. Secret Power, Return, Refresh, Take Down. Item: Scope Lens (boosts critical hit likelihood)
Kurt: Lvl 30. Crunch, Work Up, Strength, Take Down. Item: Amulet Coin (increases prize money)
Zisteau: Lvl 30. Take Down, Flame Charge, Rock Smash, Arm Thrust. Item: Charcoal (boosts fire)

Onwards, to victory!

This gym is styled after a catwalk, interesting.

First trainer sends out a lvl 27 Elekid. Out comes Six. It gets of a Thunderwave to paralyze, and our Swift brings it to half health. It uses Light Screen to boost special defence so our next Swift doesn't do so much damage. It uses Shockwave to inflict some damage but Six's Tail Slap takes it out in one hit. Out comes a Flaffy. t uses Cotton Spore to lower our speed and we miss our turn because of Six's paralysis. It uses take down and once again we miss our turn. I use our next turn to heal up and another cotton spore is applied. When Electroball hits and takes us immediately down to the red, I'm beginning to question the wisdom of not taking Nebris out the box : /

I switch Six out for Kurt. Electro ball barely makes him blink. Two Crunches take it down but we get paralysed in the process but we win.

A quick heal and we move on. BY the way, are these extended descriptions boring or are they alright? Let me know if you prefer the shorter ones?

Six versus another Flaffy. This time I use my brain and go straight for Dig. Right down to the red but we get paralysed. I hate Static ability. Electroball takes us to half health and I decide not to risk another hit landing and losing Six. Kurt to the rescue once more. Electroball to the face and he just sneezes before crunching the sheep to death. Out comes a Blitzle, a glass cannon if there ever was one. It uses Pursuit which does even less damage then falls to a single Crunch. Maybe I should just use Kurt for this gym.

The last trainer steps up. Another Blitzle. Six uses Dig to take it out right away. Elekid is sent in but before we can use dig it uses Shockwave to damage but when dig hits, it takes it out. Six then levels up and learns Wake up Slap in place of Echoed Voice, just because I want to see if its useful. If not, I'll give her back echoed voice.

A quick heal and onto Elesa, the gym leader.

She sends out Emolga, rending Dig useless. It uses Volt Switch to damage then return to Elesa, switching with Flaffy. The Swift I'd ordered does little damage. Six uses dig and misses a thunderwave to knockout the Flaffy. Out comes Emolga and I switch to Kurt once more. It uses Volt Switch again and swaps with Zebstrika. The crunch doesn't do much and then I missed what attack hit Kurt. It uses Pursuit and we use Strength. I spend a turn healing out of paranoia then it uses Pursuit. Then the next turn the git uses Volt Switch, a move I'm swiftly starting to hate, to switch with Emolga so the Strength hits that instead. We heal and  - god damn volt switch. Zebstrika, Pursuit, Strength - THANK GOD IT DIED - and Kurt leveled up. I switch out to Beef for the Emolga. It unsurprisingly uses volt switch but it can't switch since its teammates are DEAD and then Beef murders it with Secret Power.

We win! Six...wasn't as handy as I thought. She might just need more training though. We'll see how it goes.

Thero received the Bolt Badge from Elesa! Badg number 4 get! And then she gives us the TM Volt Switch, a move I'd be happy to never see again, though hilariously enough my Gavantula knows it in my Black 1 game.

Wow, then after that we get to walk down the catwalk, that's kind of amusing.

Just before we can leave the town, I spot Kurururururrr up ahead looking like he's about to get mauled, so I suppose we'd better help out...Yeah, Six totally trounced the bad guys.

Moving on, theres another battle to be had before we can clear the way. Dang plot obstacles. Three pokemon at once, oh goodness. Six, Etho and MC. I ended up switching out MC for Kurt at one point and it was rough but we won, thank goodness.

We pass by and onto the Driftveil Drawbridge. You can actually catch mons here as well as get items which boost stats. Quite handy.

Ducklett, lvl 23, female!

Hm. I'm going to call her...Starrlett, if for nothing other than the name similarity.

Starrlett: Hasty nature, likes to run, Water/flying, Keen eye prevents accuracy loss

Across the bridge we're now in Driftveil City and I witness something I never thought I'd see. Kururur punching someone. That's kind of awesome. Ahem, moving on.

Theres the usual free items from the townsfolk but for now we're more interested in the nearby areas to catch mons! Seems like theres only one right now, Route 6. Off we go!

Tranquill, male, lvl 26!

This little guy almost murdered Zisteau during the catch. I have the perfect name for him. Pause. Funny how we've had no flying types and now the choice of two should I want one. Considering taking out someone for Pause, what do you guys think?

Pause: Naughty nature, likes to thrash about, Normal/Flying. Ability: Big Pecks, stops defence being lowered.

Aww I was hoping for Super Luck, aw well.

Truthfully, Starrlett may be more useful with that ability and typing. What do you guys think? Suggestions below! Thats all for now, this has gone on too long already. Thanks for reading.

R.I.P. Avidya, Lvl 14-28

Noooooooooo not Avidya who is (one of) my partner's favorite(s), nooooooooooo! :( Poor thing.

I actually would have named a Gothita thejims, just because of some of the Gothic/Victorian themes in Hellsing, considering his skin is Alucard. Etho's ~mind games~ make it appropriate though, I guess. For some reason I associate Etho with the Steel type (probably the gray hair and how "impossible" it is to kill him).

I really like Elesa and that entire gym setup - though I admit I loved the old roller coaster more. It's cool that you get to go through the roller coaster before the catwalk thing, though!

I think you need Starrlett's typing more right now, particularly with the next gym coming up, though I guess technically Pause would do well too, and Big Pecks is nice against abilities like Intimidate which are rather common. I think Starrlett's stats will be a bit weaker than Pause's though, IIRC. I'd probably stick with Starrlett and have Pause in reserve just in case.

I hate the next gym, by the way. UGH. Not because it's a bad place necessarily - though I'm not a huge fan of the design - but going up against it with the party I had was a pain in the butt. You'll run into a cheaty evolved Nebris in that gym battle and he is SO CHEATY AND I HATE HIM SO MUCH.

Etho is probably going to be the least useful for the next gym, though you probably want to train him up for the E4 eventually (I think the E4 of this one is the same as B/W). Otherwise as much as it pains me, maybe Beef or Kurt? Ground is super-effective against Steel, so with a lack of Avidya Six's Ground-type move will be handy against cheaty evolved Nebris.

Wait. You're saying that just reading my Curse of the Golden Record story is enough to cause terrible things to happen in completely different games, where gold discs aren't even a thing? My god, what have I done?

But nothing bad's happened to me y-- No! What am I thinking? Don't say stuff like that! Gah.

You know what? No. It feeds off the fear people associate with it. I'm just going to continue on, building happy little houses in my Mindcrack mod world, and everything will be fine, and no creepers are going to blow up my stuff. But I do wonder... in the mod, Guude drops golden records, and even though I've killed a couple of them, none of them have dropped anything yet. I wonder if anything will happen when I do go after his drop.
