Day 17 - kurtmac
If you are friends with someone, it is likely you will get to know each other and learn to understand each other. Which isn’t really a bad thing, but it also means that eventually, you will be expected to behave in a certain way. If you do not, this could cause a wide variety of emotions in others, from worry to frustration.
Kurt liked his friends and he liked to spend time with them. But there were things that needed to be done. And he enjoyed the quietness of doing things on his own, so that he would actually not see them regularly. As a result, his friends would miss parts of his live, would not know about problems he was facing or about personal achievements. He would have to tell them and the short time he got to spend with his friends was too precious to him to fill it with such things. When asked, he would say a sentence or two on the subject and then steer the conversation into a different direction. After all, his friends did not only miss parts of his live, he missed parts of theirs as well.
This solution had worked fine for a long time, but the closer his friends became, the easier it was for them to pick up on even the smallest of unusual behavings on his part.
So Kurt had to work harder and harder on keeping true to the image his friends had of him.
Meeting with them no longer promised to be a relaxing and joyful experience, rather it made him feel tense, stressed and finally relieved when it was over. The Farlander had noticed at some point that he was basically playing a role. It was no longer he who got to spend time with the others, but it was the Kurtjmac they expected to see. But what could he do? He did not want to hurt his friends, offend them even. And he also did not want them to worry. They still were his friends, despite his act and despite the lies. What did it matter, if they did not get to see his true self all the time? He was not harming anyone, nor was he causing problems. So he stayed silent, listened to their talk and only added something when he was expected too. It had worked so far and it would continue to do so.
Indeed.
