Fic - Dawning Comfort
Saturday, August 17th, 2013 01:46 am"As I was saying, in King Vechs's Kingdom, there were..." Paul drifted off, standing up with narrowed eyes. He thought he had heard a low moan from outside, and as he waited in silence, it came again. This time, Avidya got up, drawing his bow. He notched an arrow, but didn't pull back.
"I'll take a look," he offered, walking up the stairs with the bow half drawn. As he rounded the corner out of sight, Baj got to his feet, adjusting his hat. The three adults held their breath, before an agonized yell came from upstairs. The twang of a bow sounded, slamming into something that rattled. Immediately after, three consecutive bow shots sounded, as bones clattered, clicked, and rattled.
Baj and Paul pounded up the stairs to reinforce Avidya. Startled by the sound, Pyro, who was still wrapped in Guude's cape, started to cry. He wailed thinly, the cape wrapped around his shoulders. His dragon head hood had fallen to rest on his back, exposing messy brown hair. Guude hesitated halfway up the stairs, looking back at Pyro. The other kids were shocked, slightly. Pakratt stirred, and Shree was sitting up, awake, and confused.
"Ah, it's alright," Guude said quietly, walking back down the stairs. He knelt down on one knees, getting as close as possible to eye level with Pyro. He was still a bit taller though. Pyro stopped wailing, looking at Guude. Guude reached out to ruffle Pyro's hair gently. "C'mon buddy, it'll be alright. Just stay here, okay?" He wiped away the tears on the child's face with a thumb, before standing up. "You guys don't move. We'll keep you safe." He grinned. Hesitantly, Kurt grinned back.
"Okay," they chorused softly. Guude smiled.
"Good. Guys, go into this room first, okay?" He lead them into Bdubs storage room, which was small, but cozy. "I'll be right back." He turned and dashed up the stairs, to where the Zombies and Skeletons were trying to get past Paul, Baj, and Avidya.
The children looked at each other hesitantly. Pyro had curled up back in Guude's cape, and scary noises were coming from upstairs. Shree was looking around uncertainly, clutching the blankets to his chest. Most of the children were in groups of two, Zisteau with Kurt, Pakratt with Shree, and Bdubs and Vechs sat reasonably close to each other. After a particularly loud moan, accompanied by a harsh rattle of bones, Kurt stood up, pulling his jacket closer around him.
"Y'should go out there," Pakratt said softly behind him. Kurt whipped around, blinking at Pakratt.
"Why not?" He asked.
Pakratt shrugged. "Because Guude said t' not go out there," he said, still in the same soft voice. "Mr. Guude," he corrected himself after a pause. He yawned, still sleepy. He leaned against the wall, near a torch. He had some strange dreams while asleep, of some man - kind of like Mr. Guude or Mr. Paul, but sorta looked like him. He didn't know what it meant.
Kurt sat back down uncertainly. Some part of him wanted to go out there, to walk and explore. He really wanted to do so. But the older blacked haired child - Pakratt - was right. He turned around, facing the torch. It was warm, and he started to toy with his glasses.
Shree had no reason to be alarmed. He was safe. He felt safe, and he had been assured by Mr. Guude that they would remain so. He fiddled with the blanket, before standing up suddenly. He swooshed the long fabric around with a grin on his face. Vechs made a sound of surprised as he was draped suddenly, and Bdubs scrambled away to avoid that happening to him. Shree grinned happily, as the blanket moved, and Vechs's head popped out. He still looked slightly surprised, although a small smile spread on his face.
The stairs outside the room groaned. Someone, or some people, were walking down them. Pakratt rose, as the other children huddled back. As silly as it sounded, Pakratt wanted to protect his... Friends? Fellow children? He didn't know them, right?
... So why did it feel like he did?
Paul, Baj, Avidya, and Guude rounded the corner, and the children sighed in relief. Pyro rolled himself out of Guude's cape, tripping over the tail of his dragon jumper to get to Guude. Guude grinned, picking up the small 3 year old child.
"Guude!" Pyro cheered. Paul grinned at the sight, while Baj and Avidya slumped against the chests. Avidya hissed, poking at a shoulder wound gently. Rummaging in the chests around them, Baj took Avidya by the wrist.
"I'm going over to Etho's place," he said, rising. "He has potions over there. I'll bring some back." Baj left with Avidya, leaving Paul and Guude with the children. Paul shrugged. He sat near the children. They arranged themselves comfortably around him, now all sharing the blanket. Shree was lying on his stomach, the blanket draped over his back. Pakratt sat cross legged, one corner over his shoulder. Kurt was on the opposite side of the blanket, partially using his jacket, while Zisteau huddled close. Vechs lay directly in front of Paul, and Bdubs beside him. Guude behind them all, holding Pyro, who was reluctant to let go.
Paul cleared his throat. "Ah yes, the Kingdom of King Vechs, right? Well, before I get into that, you must know, that King Vechs was not always a King. And that Queen Kawa was once Princess Kawa, due to marry Prince Guude, but that will come after we talk about King Vechs..."
