Calm before the storm, guys!
Nebris frowned. "What do you mean, you don't have a plan?" he asked
Pakratt shrugged. "Haven't really had th' time t' be formulatin' one. I was too busy bein' tortured," he responded dryly. He then looked down at his clothing. "Can we go back t' my place for a bit? I wanna change into somethin' that isn't ripped t' shreds."
And so, the three heroes set off for Pakratt's spawn house. It was early evening, so there were no monsters out just yet, but the men still kept vigilant against any threat that may have come their way.
"And I liked this suit, too..." Pakratt mumbled as he entered his home and ushered his friends in afterwards.
Fifteen minutes and one new suit later, the three were sitting at Pakratt's dining room table, eating a dinner of uncooked food and attempting to come up with a plan.
"Nebs, how many potions do you have left on you?" MC asked, poking at his meager dinner of mashed potatoes and carrots.
Nebris thought for a moment. "Uh, I have a night vision one. Not useful at all. I could brew some more up, but that might take a while, and we can't afford to waste time."
"Do you have any potions here, Pak?"
Pakratt shook his head. "I'm pretty sure th' other me woulda smashed 'em by now, MC. Sorry. ... We could check storage, though. Are ya up t' that?"
Nebris shrugged. "Better than just sitting here," he remarked.
Pakratt's storage room was every bit as messy as it had been when MC and Nebris had first found it.
"Ugh, I still gotta clean this up," Pakratt remarked, making a face. He noticed the note from earlier on the ground. "Someone remind me that I've gotta write letters when we're done in here."
MC raised an eyebrow. "Letters?" he questioned.
"Well, yeah. I gotta let Ray and Hon know what's goin' on over here. They may live far away from us, but they're Cobblehaterz too... 'Sides, I'm pretty sure Hon would kill me if she found out I got myself into this horrible situation and didn't tell her," Pakratt explained.
Nebris nodded. "Gotcha."
The three set about cleaning up the storage room and reorganizing chests. They came across a lot of building material and resources, but sadly, no potions.
MC slumped down against a wall. "That was a lot more tiring and unpleasant than I thought it was going to be."
"You tell me," Nebris agreed. "... now what do we do?"
"Keep planning?" MC offered. "Pak, you need to write your letters."
"Right," Pakratt said, before disappearing out into the hallway.
MC and Nebris watched him go. "I've known that guy for a long time, and I still don't understand him," Nebris remarked.
"Does anyone?" MC responded, chuckling.
The two sat in silence for a moment, slumped up against opposite walls of Pakratt's ransacked storage room.
"... Do you think Pakratt's going to live through this, Nebs?" MC asked, fear in his voice finally starting to break through. He'd been through hell and back in one day's time, and all he wanted was for his friend to be okay again. But no matter how much hope MC had for the ponderer, he still couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of dread at the thought od the upcoming battle.
Nebris sighed. "You want my honest opinion? No."
"I was afraid you'd say that," MC responded, looking down and drawing imaginary lines in the stone with his finger. At this moment, nothing felt real to him anymore. He wouldn't be surprised if he woke up in his bed soon. MC figured that the imminent death of one of his friends would have had more of an impact on him, but he just felt numb, like there was something that had been there, but was cut out. He wasn't sure which was worse.
"Hey, I don't want to believe it any more than you do. But you read Etho's book; if one dies, so does the other. How are we going to stop the evil Pakratt without killing him?" Nebris questioned.
MC drew his legs up to his chest and hugged his knees. "I want to believe that there's hope, but... I think you're right about this one, Nebs," he relented. "At least Pakratt's taking this well."
"I think he's trying not to think about it," Nebris replied.
"What are we going to tell Rayman and Honney when this is all over? If we even live..." MC trailed off.
"... The truth. That he went down fighting to save all of us," Nebris stated.
MC's thoughts turned to the two other Cobblehaterz, and how devastated they were going to be when they found out. Rayman worked just as hard as everyone else in the group, but only got a portion of the credit that he deserved. MC imagined he would take the news with solemn resignation. Honney, however... she had been Pakratt's best friend for as long as MC could remember. This... this was going to be hard on her. Maybe Nebris could deliver the news, MC thought.
"... H-how about that plan, Nebs?" MC asked in a desperate attempt to take his mind off the other, far-off members of their group.
"I think I have an idea. Pakratt said that his proximity to his evil half diminishes the evil half's powers, right? So my theory is that we should send Pakratt in there first, have him get the drop on his evil side, and then we'll take it from there," Nebris explained.
MC frowned. "I like it so far, but... Are we going to have to kill him?"
"Probably. I highly doubt Pak's evil half is really up for negotiations at this point," Nebris answered.
"Hmm... what if we could get the two halves to join up again?" MC suggested.
Nebris sighed. "We don't know how we could do that. The book looked like it might have had something once, but it's totally trashed now."
The sound of shuffling footsteps behind them made the two men look up. Pakratt was standing at the doorway, two letters in his hand.
"Alright you two, just lemme send these off and then get the guest rooms ready. I'm thinkin' we should set off tomorrow mornin'. Does that sound good to you guys?" Pakratt offered.
MC shrugged. "I guess so..."
MC and Nebris followed after Pakratt, Nebris trying to think of a plan that could spare his friend, and MC trying all the way not to think about losing him.
(To be continued...)
You all should totally watch Cobblehaterz season 5.1. It's nice and short, and has tons of hilarious Pakratt and Honney interaction. She needs a tag...
I'm jetlagged as all get out and it's four in the morning. I should probably sleep now if I want to get up at a decent time tomorrow.
