Thanks a lot for the positive reception, guys. It's been really encouraging <3 .

Also, as I'll be posting this once a day, it'll probably either when I wake up or when I get home from school (so anywhere from 6 am to 3-4 pm).

Thanks and enjoy!

"What was that, Pause?" Beef asked his fellow officer with a wide grin. "You're usually so good with firearms! That last shot blew right past the target."

The flawless pumpkin sat on its post thirty yards away, silently mocking the Native.

"Well so-rry if I hate using this stupid shotgun!" Pause tossed it to the ground with a huff. It bounced, nearly whacking him in the leg with the barrel. "I'm good with a rifle, not an oversized blunderbuss."

The sergeant rolled his eyes. "We're supposed to be getting back to the station real soon, anyway. Lunch break's almost over."

Pause sighed. "Too bad Etho doesn't join us when we're out here. Nothing exciting ever happens back there - at least when I'm not around."

"I think that's what he likes, Pause. Some alone time, where he doesn't have to listen to you complain for hours on end."

He scoffed. "Just because you're my superior officer and I disagree with you, it automatically means I'm 'complaining'?"

Beef nodded.

"But that's stupid!"

---------

"Etho?" Beef's head peered around the corner of the wall and into the office. "You in here?"

He was answered with silence. The lights were off, the books untouched, dust coating all but the front desk. Just like always.

"Goddamit." Pause walked past Beef into the room. "He's always gone when we get back! Who's supposed to take care of the place when we're not here?"

"The other officers." Their missing companion appeared behind Beef, making the duo jump. "Or they would, if we had any."

"Thanks for reminding me, Etho." Beef glared. "I'm aware that the uptown unit actually has more than one squadron, thanks, and don't really need you - or Pause - to keep bringing it up."

Even then, we crack more cases than them, he observed silently.

As Etho opened his mouth to reply, the clock on the wall chimed one, announcing the end of the group's lunch break and their inevitable return to work. "C'mon, we're supposed to inspect another crime scene. Murder a few blocks from here."

Pause rolled his eyes wearily, the three filing out into the wild street. The door swung shut behind them.

---------

Blood was splattered across the walls, the floor, and the ceiling of the apartment. In the center of the bloodbath lay a dead body - an unidentified adult female with long blond hair (the ends now soaked in dark red). Two stab wounds were immediately prominent, once in her stomach and another in her neck. The offending dagger, made somewhat notably of steel, remained comfortably stuck below her chin. Next to her head, someone had painted a small white skull, square in dimensions but round in shape. It was signed in shaky white letters, "THE BEAST".

This was the third one this month.

Beef and Etho were, quite resolutely, doing their jobs - inspecting the body, attempting identification, being the ideal police officers that Server City needed. Pause, on the other hand, was leaning against the sole clean patch of wall, looking wholly uninterested.

"If you're really that bored, Pause," Etho looked to his sulking friend. "You could always go out and grab us a few things. We need a bag of supplies from the station, the one that contains the identification kit. It's also got the case book in it."

"Sure. Great. I'm outta here!" Eagerly, the rookie pulled the door open and headed out into the street. "Yeah, yeah, don't worry, I'll find it!"

"Doesn't really like the force much, does he?" The lieutenant asked with a small grin.

"Pause is more interested in the shoot-to-kill part of being an officer," Beef replied. "He wasn't exactly enthusiastic about being here in the first place. Most would have rathered pick jail."

They continued to do their duties for a while longer, but it soon became clear that little else could be done without the supplies Pause had left for.

"Where is he?" Etho checked his wristwatch. "It should've only taken three or four minutes."

From outside, they heard a sudden shout. The duo leapt to their feet, hands tightly clutching their guns of choice. As Beef opened the door out into the city, the two froze.

A few feet away from the apartment, Pause lay on the ground, a blade tucked in his stomach. As he soaked in his own blood, two things rested next to him - a small paper note, and a familiar grinning skull painted in white.
