So I started writing a story, this is the kind of prologue stuff. I know it's kinda short, but if I added then next bitty in, it seems a bit long. Please forgive my British spelling.
On a side note: thanks to yamina for beta
The early rising summer sun was shining in through the windows, heating the classroom and making it almost unbearable. The building was an old structure, many rooms fitted the same floor plan, square with a whiteboard at the front beside the only door. The desks and chairs were newer in every class, having been replaced over the summer holiday. Both were light and easily stackable, so each room could be modified to the teachers needs.
Guude was fanning himself with his thinnest book. It was the first class for term and he was ready for the end of classes. Pause was a couple of desks away, leaning forward to doodle on Bajs’ desk. Further along the row he noticed that Pak had brought out a handheld fan, which he was sharing with Blame, if only he’d sat closer to them. He could hear Doc’s Cyborg half’s internal fan going, creating a flow of air that Anderz was capitalising on. Guude suddenly realised that Millbee’s fur had grown back since he’d had it cut midway through the summer break, he must be sweltering. It still seemed weird to Guude that several people had taken months to talk to Millbee, or Doc. He’d been lucky to grow up in a tolerant household, but he was still aware of the difficulties that ‘half-breeds’ faced, and it was something he wished he could change. At least in school they were treated like everyone else, which was a start.
The Class was awaiting the announcement of class president. The three candidates stood at the front of the class, Seth, Nebris and Etho. Seth attention was unaffected by the heat, watching the teacher count each vote. Etho appeared relaxed, though equally attentive, while not really caring for the outcome. Nebris on the other hand, wearing way too many layers of clothing, was leaning against the wall watching the lint float through the air.
“Guude, come outside with me for a moment.” The Teacher requested. Guude had been taught by this teacher before, she seemed quick to anger and was now their form teacher. Form class was a new thing since they’d started in the ‘big’ school, even though it was the same building. Form class was basically a class to check that everyone was awake and a last chance to do homework, but with a teacher's help. With this teacher's quick temper it was yet to be seen how much use the help would be.
Guude got up, looking confused, followed the teacher into the corridor. Seth seemed to be annoyed, why didn’t the teacher announce the winner? Seth watched Guude make his way to the door from the back of the class. Etho took this chance to let his composure go as he slipped into the shadow in the corner and appeared to vanish. Nebris left where he’d been told to stand to steal a spot beside Pak and share the fan. Guude heard Baj break the silence as he moved through the doorframe, asking why they thought the teacher was asking Guude outside. It quickly dissolved into several smaller groups discussing what was happening in hushed tones to give a chance to overhear what was being said outside. Guude began closing the door noting that Arkas, as the closest to the exit, was positioning himself to eavesdrop, making sure he could pretend he hadn’t when the teacher returned. He shut the door and turned to the teacher.
"It would seem you won, by a substantial margin." The teacher sounded annoyed.
"Oh." Guude was now truly confused, why would anyone write a name of someone who didn’t run?
“Would you be willing to take the position?” She was tapping her foot, clearly just wanting to get this sorted without revoting.
“What would I have to do anyway?” Guude had never been interested in the position, but knew it came with perks like getting out of classes.
“Just represent your class at monthly meetings, you get food and drink at them.” She glanced at her watch, the whole process had taken too long, and Guude was aware that it was probably nearly time for their first lesson.
“If that’s what they really want sure.” Guude gestured at the door. He could see why no-one would want to be represented by Nebris, who clearly didn’t care about the position or doing anything with it, but the other two, why not them? They’d both filled the position in previous years, and both had happily done whatever it entailed.
“I’ll announce it. You just head along to the headmaster and tell him.”
Guude hadn’t gotten halfway down the corridor when he heard Pauses laugh above everyone else's protests and suddenly knew who was to blame.
Seth and Etho avoided Guude in the upcoming weeks, feeling cheated. Even if Etho didn’t want to win - in his mind it was Seth’s turn - he still thought it shouldn’t be open to those who didn’t run. They both found it easy to blame Guude, He had accepted the position with minimal protests. They thought he’d not officially run so that the candidates were unaware of his campaign for the position, but had still convinced the others to vote for him over them before the class had started. ‘They didn’t put enough thought into it’, Guude mused. He hadn’t expressed any interest in the position before, and wouldn’t use such an underhanded tactic. If he was going to go for the position he would run alongside them.
Pause fled whenever Guude approached, he would not even be near Guude in class if it could be avoided.
Meanwhile Nebris seemed to follow Guude everywhere, as if attached by an invisible cord. He flat out denied it every time Guude tried to ask him about it and Guude had given up trying to argue about it.
Most of the other students had voted for Guude and were happy he’d accepted the position, or they didn’t care. No-one was admitting voting for Guude.
Every morning their form teacher told them what was going to be available for lunch. Wednesdays choice consisted of fishcakes and assorted sandwiches. No-one wanted to be stuck with the fishcakes as they always tasted off. They were aware that the food was free, as it was provided by the boarding school, but why was some of the hot food always undercooked or overcooked.
Guude was glad that he could leave the class slightly early, allowing him to avoid the initial crush of the canteen, aware it was supposed to give him time to talk to students that had issues after he’d finished his lunch. He began moving his things to his bag before the bell sounded, like the others around him, but while they waited to be dismissed he just walked out. Hearing the teacher call Nebris back as he tried to follow caused Guude to chuckle.
As he walked he tried to decide how he could get Seth or Etho to stop long enough to hold a conversation. He knew that he would have to make sure that he managed to get ahold of one of them to ask what he needed to do beyond listening issues that students were having. His first meeting was this friday and beyond the vague description that his teacher had given, he didn’t know what he was expected to do.
He was the first one in the canteen, and headed into the service area on one side of the room, watched closely by the server behind the fishcakes. He picked up a tray and started taking food, sandwich first, then adding fruit and crisps. He picked up one of the jello cups, silently wishing it was friday as that was the only day with choices of desserts. Finally he headed to the drinks dispenser and cutlery area. He placed his tray down before filling a cup with soda and grabbing a spoon for his dessert.
He walked out of the open door to the picnic style area outside the canteen and chose a bench. The canteen was drafty and cold, outside the late summer heat was still present, though it was starting to cool as autumn approached. He wasn’t there too long before Baj and Beef joined him, both with sandwiches and in a middle of an argument. After a few minutes of listening to them he realised it was about what the teacher had assigned for homework in a class he didn’t attend, so he stayed out of it. Unfortunately they turned to Guude to settle the argument and he had to remind them that he wasn’t in that class.
Nebris walked out of the canteen, searching the crowd before he sat beside Guude, to nobody's surprise. He almost dumped his juice on Baj as he dropped his tray down and threw his bag under the table. Baj was still focused on shouting at Beef, so he didn’t notice. Due to being late he was stuck with the fishcakes. He prodded them, they fell apart and the smell hit everyone's noses. After a quick look of disgust he began his crisps instead, eying Bajs sandwich as a possibility to be liberated for himself.
“Jesus Nebris, take that anywhere else.”, Guude complained.
“Were where told to hand in sock photos!”, Bajs raised voice exclaimed.
“No seats left.” Nebris shuffled in his seat, making sure that he wasn’t looking at any of the half empty tables around.
“Not Socks, SOOC.” Beef was explaining to Baj, voice far calmer than his.
“I can see one right there” Guude pointed towards the table that had only Pause and Etho.
“What the Hell is sock if it’s not sock?” Desperation now in Baj’s voice.
At this point Etho wandered over, once again one of the first to finish eating.
“S. O. O. C.” Beef emphasised his point.
“Guude, I’m sorry.” Etho stated, seeming concerned that he might not be forgiven.
“For what guy?” Guude cocked his head slightly, watching the worried Etho.
“I’d thought you’d rigged the election, Pause told me that it was his and Beef’s work.” Etho glanced at Beef who looked uneasy, and started gathering his stuff up, quickly leaving.
“So that’s what happened, Beef! Wait for me!” Nebris called to Beefs retreating form. He seized his backpack out from under the table. His drink fell as he jerked the tray up, spilling on Etho, Nebris sped away ignoring the exasperated sigh. Etho was only slightly annoyed by the juice down his top, but made a mental note to get him back later anyway.
“It’s fine.” Guude ignoring the commotion accepted the apology, passed Etho some paper napkins from the dispenser in the middle of the table. “Can I ask you some questions about the class president position?”
Etho’s face lit up, his concern that Guude wouldn’t actively fill the position faded. He sat and answered the stream of questions Guude had been building over the past month. Baj looked annoyed at Etho, his own argument unresolved and still unsure of the work that they were supposed to do. He noisily ate his sandwich before leaving to find someone else in the class to question.
Later Guude found Seth hovering outside his dorm room. After a quick apology and an invite to his latest game creation he left. Guude sighed, fumbling for the key to his dorm room. ‘Drama, who wants any of the stuff?’
Pause had left the lunch hall late, having had a discussion with Beef. He started to wonder if Beef might be right, but Pause felt so sure that Guude would still be annoyed about being made class president. The whole thing had seemed so logical at the time. Guude was the one who’d helped everyone. He would listen to people's problems and try to help, or send them to another who might be able to help. He realised the time as the town’s clock tolled the hour, which meant that he was late for a tennis match with Coe. It was lunch so the corridors remained mostly student free, everyone outside rather than in the dark hallways. He didn’t run, he’d always been spotted by teachers in past, and that would take too long to resolve, so he just walked as quickly as he could. Still, he was in such a rush that he forgot to look as he took the corner, walking into Guude.
“Hey guy, long time no see” Guude greeted, smile on face, having gotten into Pauses way deliberately to force the conversation.
“Heh, yeah, I should go.” Pause responded, trying to avoid the conversation. Guudes smile dropped at Pauses response.
“Why do you keep running?”
“I’m running late.” Pause tried to step around Guude.
“I meant in general.” Guude matched Pauses steps.
“I didn’t even give you the option of not being class president, and it caused Etho to be so mad at you, I could have told him right away what I’d done but didn’t, I was selfish” Pause blurted out, finally giving up on getting around Guude.
“That’s old news, move on. Anyway I could have said no.”
“I hadn’t realised.”
“You know you're an idiot right?” Guude joked, smile back on his face.
Five minutes later, Pause and Guude were laughing at Baj and Beefs latest mix-up, as they entered the indoor tennis court.
