Chapter Nine
Mindcrack Territory, Vortex. June 29, year 323 Minecraftia time. Time instance 483Z.
Twenty-four days had passed, as near as Vechs could figure. He had found out quite a bit about being a worldbuilder in that time- they did need food, water, and rest, but not nearly as much as he did when he was mortal. He had gone three days without rest before realizing that he was tired and hungry and needed to stop. They could indeed float around, but it took more energy than walking, and he couldn’t do super energy intensive things like the others could due to being temporary, such as changing much with the laws and rules of his chunk all at once. He had met most of the others, but the names swirled around his head and he struggled to remember them all.
Guude and Paul came in sometimes to check on his progress. He was working on a land of fire and magma, and when asked why, he would just shrug. It was what he wanted to do. He had also spent some time on his room, making it fit his style a little more. He had even managed to summon a bat to follow him around (he had immediately fallen in love with it and hissed at anyone that messed with it).
“But what is it for?” Paul persisted, motioning around at the dangerous landscape.
Vechs sighed. “A challenge. Think you can survive in this, survivor man?”
Paul looked around and grinned. “I could try.”
“Great. Now go away and let me finish. I’m almost done.” Vechs nudged him a little with his shoulder to show he wasn’t being rude.
“Sure, Vechs.” Paul went back through the door.
Vechs sighed and went back to focusing on what he had been trying to create before Paul had barged in to check on him. At some points in his chunk, he had needed to create some tools to work with instead of his powers themselves. He couldn’t get as specific and detailed with them as he could with tools. His grip on them was a bit unsure due to how his hands were built, but he always tried anyway.
What he needed was something to hold these tools so he didn’t have to recreate them every time. Putting them down somewhere had proven a bad idea, as they always either slipped into the lava or he forgot where they were.
He adjusted his goggles a bit before closing his eyes and focusing. He had only seen one once, and he hoped that it wouldn’t make it any more difficult to create.
After some trial and error, Vechs found himself holding a toolbelt.
The final accessory to an appearance that would be known and feared.
He adjusted it a bit to fit him and put it on, grinning widely. He summoned up some often-used tools and secured them there.
Perfect.
After admiring it for a bit, he went back to work.
~~~
Two days later, Vechs soared through his creation. He had finished by now, and was quite pleased with it. He angled towards the entrance- the door now was within an obsidian wall by the starting area- to leave and tell Paul he just needed to fix up the laws and rules of the world and then it would be ready. However, Guude stepped through the door before Vechs reached it. Vechs had been flying with his wings, soaring on the warm air generated by the lava, so he folded his wings and landed in front of Guude in a quick swooping motion.
“Jeez! Don’t do that!” Guude and jumped and almost fallen.
“Sorry. What’s up?”
“Well, two things. One, we have another worldbuilder as well- also a temporary- and the second…well…next meeting we’re going to vote on whether to make you permanent or not.”
Vechs froze for a moment before grinning broadly and bouncing a little. “Really?!”
Guude smiled and nodded. “Yep. You’ve been friendly and productive and helpful whenever anyone needs help with something.” This was true- Vechs had been helping out with repairs when he wasn’t working on his own project.
“That’s great! Thank you!”
“Don’t thank me yet, we still need to vote on it. Now, where’s…” Guude looked around and back at the door. “Don’t’ tell me he’s scared of the door.”
“Who?”
“Chad. The new temporary.” Guude sighed and went back through the door. Vechs shrugged and followed.
On the other side, they encountered a guy with red hair looking a bit shy of the door. He looked like he was holding in a scream when Vechs came through the door, scrambling backwards and tripping over his own feet.
“Woah, hey, Chad, it’s okay!” Guude assured. “This is Vechs! I told you he was a little…different.”
“Different?! Yeah, yeah I’d say so!” Chad was shaking in terror.
“You’re okay.” Vechs told him, holding out a hand to help him up. Chad looked at it and didn’t take it, too scared. Guude helped him up instead.
“Vechs won’t hurt you, Chad, don’t worry. He’s friendly.”
“Usually.” Vechs grinned, showing his teeth.
“I-I...I, uh...” Chad looked like he wanted to leave. Guude shot a withering glare at Vechs, as if saying ‘you’re not helping.’
“Come on, Chad, there’s more to see and others to meet.” He made a vague ‘goodbye’ motion at Vechs before taking Chad by the arm and walking him out of the room.
Once they were gone, Vechs burst into uncontrollable laughter, leaning against the wall. He struggled to breathe, he was laughing so hard.
Turns out scaring people shitless was hilarious.
July twenty-seventh. The day of the meeting.
Vechs was a bundle of nerves as he followed Paul to the exit of Spawntown, down the hall from the portal room.
“It’ll be okay.” Paul assured. “I’m pretty sure everyone will vote you in as a permanent. Chad too, I’ll bet. He’s been really helpful so far.”
Vechs just nodded, silent. What if they didn’t vote him in? Would he remain a temporary? Would he have to go back to being mortal? He certainly didn’t want that. He double-checked his accessories for the fifth time. Goggles, check. Helmet, check. Toolbelt, check. Pants, check. He seemed ready.
“Your projects are good too.” Paul remarked before stepping through the doorway out of Spawntown. Once Vechs was through, he kept talking. “The three chunks you’ve worked on so far are great- I know the third isn’t done yet but I can’t wait to spend some time in it. The only thing I think it might need is a way to…to win, you know? A goal system.”
Paul mentioned this to try and get Vechs’s mind working on something else other than the meeting, and he succeeded. Vechs nodded and considered his words, running over the idea of a goal and what it might be. He didn’t even notice as Paul led him down a hallway into the meeting room until he was nudged and told that he was next to his seat.
Vechs double-checked the nametag on the back but he didn’t really have to, as his chair was pretty obvious even from a distance due to its larger size to accommodate the monster. He sat down, Paul to his right. He checked the nametag of the seat to his left and groaned quietly.
Blame the Controller.
At least he wasn’t here yet. Vechs didn’t have anything against the guy, but the masked man definitely disliked Vechs for no real reason other than he was there, it seemed.
He waved a little to Coe, who waved back. He was back in fine health and sat down between Pause and Doc., who was deep in conversation with Nebris on his other side. Several other Mindcrackers were there as well, including Guude, Generik, Bdoubleo (which Vechs was sure wasn’t his actual name but he insisted it was), Etho, Chad (who looked like he was as nervous as Vechs and shot him a momentary smile which Vechs returned- Chad had lost all fear of Vechs over the month or so), Millbee, and Arkas. The rest had yet to arrive.
“Any ideas on that goal system?” Paul finally asked after five minutes or so.
“Maybe. I’ll let you know if I get a concrete idea.”
Paul grinned. “You do that. I’d love to hear about it.”
Vechs privately reflected that Zisteau would have loved his projects, which he had lately come to refer to as the Super Hostile chunks. Surviving in dangerous environments? Cheating death? Collecting items to find a way out? Despite how grumpy he had been on that day that Vechs refused to think about, he loved that kind of thing.
The thought made him feel like he’d been kicked in the throat. He struggled to keep his pain back, to not cry with everyone watching him. He couldn’t think about Zisteau. Anything but Zisteau. He was so focused on not thinking about Zisteau that he didn’t even notice Blame sitting beside him, not even looking at him.
Paul seemed to notice something was wrong and just put his hand on Vechs’s arm, to remind him he still had friends. Vechs shot him a grateful look before Guude stood up and the room fell silent.
The others had arrived.
The meeting was about to begin.
Residual, the second part, focuses a lot more on the maps. I can't say much else but I think you'll like it.
