Chapter 29.5. Making Plans

Joseph didn't know how long to wait to contact Etho. It hadn't been long so he knew he ought to wait a little longer, but he was growing impatient. For all he knew Etho never intended to bring him back to Sunreth, he could be cursed to live the rest of his life on Earth. An idea that terrified him.

He was currently sat in a 50s style diner with Craig, discussing everything that had happened. Joseph was grateful that, despite everything, he still had one friend. If he could call Craig a friend.

"I'm sure Etho won't leave you here. I bet he'll come and get you as soon as he can," Craig said reassuringly.

Joseph sipped his coffee and shrugged, "You've not met Etho, he's holding a fairly big grudge on me from trapping him."

"I can't really blame him. I'm not a fan of small spaces, I'd be pretty mad."

"Thank you for your comforting words, Craig." Joseph deadpanned.

"I'm just telling the truth," Craig shrugged.

Despite Craig's company, Joseph felt alone. He was literally the oldest man on earth, a fact that had taken him a long time to get his head around. On Sunreth he was old, sure, but here he was the oldest. It was a strange feeling. Craig had once suggested he try and make something of the fact, but Joseph wasn't that type of man. He liked to make his own success, not use something as simple as his age.

Craig had suggested a lot of ways for Joseph to use his abilities. One suggestion had been to become the world's greatest magician and the only one to use real magic. Joseph had had to explain that due to Earth’s lack of natural magic, he couldn't waste his magic on entertaining people.

"Joe.." Craig said pulling Joseph back to reality.

"If you do go back to Sunreth..." he paused, like he wasn't sure he should say what he was going to say, "...could I come with you?"

The older man frowned, he'd never imagined Craig would want to come with him. He'd assumed that they would part ways and that would be the end of it.

"Well, I suppose you could," Joseph said, "however it is very different to Earth."

"I know, you've talked about it a lot and it sounds like a nice place."

"It's wonderful, but moving universe is a big decision,"

Craig nodded, "Yes, I know. I just wonder if I might be able to make something better of myself there, you know?"

"Like what?"

"I'm not sure," Craig sighed, "I'm in a dead end job here. Most of my family is dead or I don't speak to them. To be perfectly honest, I'm bored of life. Wouldn't Sunreth bring a new excitement?"

"I imagine it would. There are fyairs, actually, I'll use Earth terminology for you. If you came to Sunreth you would have to learn the other terms for them," Craig just nodded, "well there are dragons, witches, wizards, fairies, elves, goblins and dwarfs. It's so different from Earth in so many wondrous ways. There is no electricity, though. I think that is one of the few things that I'll miss about Earth, the technology here is amazing."

"You do know what I do for a living, right?" Craig asked. When Joseph shook his head he continued, "I work for an IT company. I know how to make phones and computers. I could probably do it from scratch."

"And this is a dead end job?" Joseph asked, confused.

"Well, yeah. I've not had a promotion for a long time, the pay is good but I'm not progressing."

"I suppose you could bring something amazing to Sunreth if you moved there…" Joseph said slowly, "Are you sure about this?"

"Absolutely certain. I've been thinking about asking you for a long time, but you never seemed very close to accomplishing your goal of returning."

Joseph just laughed, "You are not wrong my friend, you are not wrong."

And so the two men made plans for Craig's move, should Etho keep his end of the deal and bring Joseph home. Joseph let himself get excited, despite himself. The idea of being home was enough to fill the old man with joy.

"Before I leave I think I should pull off some magical stunt to wow Earth and then vanish without a trace." Joseph chuckled.

"You should one hundred percent do that." Craig agreed.

"But what?"

"I'm sure you'll think of something."
